A shy, young man, who is completely incapable of talking to
women, decides to write a book that details to other bachelors
how to find a girlfriend.
It was a silent, black and white film – to make it funny they would
have used slapstick comedy.

some sort and don’t talk for a while then both confess their love for
each other and live happily ever after.
6. CAMERA SHOTS
An eyelevel angle is the one in which the camera is placed at
the subject’s height, so if the actor is looking at the lens, he
wouldn’t have to look up or down. Eyelevel shots are incredibly
common because they are neutral. They often have no dramatic
power whatsoever, thus they are ideal for romantic comedies
Shot, reverse, shot is used in rom coms to emphasise the
conversation and highlight the reactions of the characters.
7. MISE-EN-SCENE - COSTUME
In
romantic comedies, the costumes used tend to be
stylish, but relaxed and fairly basic. This is to make the
audience not feel alienated, but also it creates a
more relaxed feeling to the movie genre. There is
normally at least one character within the film, usually
the sidekick, who’s costume tends to be slightly more
‘out there’. This shows that they are the humerous
character, which makes the film more of a romantic
comedy than a romance film.
8. MISE-EN-SCENE - PROPS
There
can be a wide variety of props used in romcoms, these props could be to show wealth such as
cars, mansions and nice clothing or they could be
props to show lack of wealth such as messy clothes
and not many nice things. Props can also be used in
rom-coms as a sign of love, such as a wedding
ring, for example this is used in the film leap year when
he proposes to her to show his love to her.
9. MISE-EN-SCENE - LIGHTING
In
rom-coms there is a number of different lightings
that could be used. Natural lighting is used in natural
environments, for example in the park in the film Maid
In Manhattan. Also high key lighting is used this is to
show love and happiness, this could also be used to
imply the comical side of the film. Low key lighting can
be used in a romantic way, for example candle light. low key lighting is used in Friends with Benefits at parts
to show passion.
