1. Welcome Parents of Kindergarteners! Thank you for attending this online tutorial that will introduce you to the types of technology your child is using at school. Brittany Hubbard EDTC 6070-601 Assignment 5
2. Objective: The parents will become familiar with different types of technology their child is using in school and what they can practice at home to get their child better acquainted with technology!
3. Following the presentation… Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions. Parents will be able to discuss benefits of learned technology in the classroom. Parents will be asked to answer brief questions to ensure the objectives were well covered in the presentation.
4. Computers Your child uses a computer several times each week for several reasons: They practice recognition of sight words on a PowerPoint slide show. They participate in Accelerated Reader. They utilize the Starfall website to practice literacy skills. They play games that require them to practice using arrow keys, space bar, maneuvering the mouse, drag and drop, and other basic computer skills.
5. Document Cameras (Elmo) This has replaced the old overhead projectors you likely remember from school! The ELMO can transfer a picture perfect live image onto a screen when hooked up to a projector. We use these for projecting books to read together, practice finger pointing, and going on word hunts These are also great tools to use when giving students directions on a task as you can do it with them, or model for them so that everyone can see
6. Smartboard This amazing teaching tool is an interactive whiteboard. A computer is connected to the SMARTboard and the monitor screen is projected onto the whiteboard. The whiteboard is touch-sensitive so that you can maneuver on the large board as you would a computer screen. We use SMARTboard for lots of things such as learning games, calendar routine, watching videos relevant to objectives, Tumble books, etc. The possibilities are endless!
7. What can I do to help my child develop technology skills? Don’t be afraid to let them use the computer, iPad, or even your Smart phone! Show them basic skills on the computer – search for free online games to utilize these skills. You could practice both letter recognition and typing by letting them hunt and peck to become familiar with a keyboard. Your child is growing up in a word that is very technology-based and they must learn to be proficient with the tools around them!
8. Let’s review! COPY AND PASTE THESE QUESTIONS INTO A WORD DOCUMENT, THEN ANSWER AND SUBMIT TO THE EMAIL ON THE NEXT SLIDE. What type of technology has replaced the overhead projectors and what is one way it is used in a K classroom? In what ways would your child use a computer in school in kindergarten? A SMARTboard is special because it is ______ sensitive. What are two things parents can do to help their child become more successful with technology?
