‘The Window’ The Advanced Portfolio Evaluation By Bianca Goldman & Elysia Polin
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Narrative When thinking about our narrative, we Decided that our film followed the conventions of Todorov’s theory. We also used binary opposites which was the theory of Levi Strauss. Todorov’s theory is having an equilibrium, disequilibrium and then an equilibrium. However one could argue that our film does not have a final equilibrium yet overall our film certainly does have a beginning, middle and end
Lighting The Black Button The Window After seeing the short film “The Black Button” on YouTube during our research, we decided to use the same bright lighting to create a surreal atmosphere for our film as the narrative of ‘The Window’ is more of a fable or a moral tale therefore we wanted it to be slightly unrealistic like The Black Button.
Props During our research we watched hospital drama Casualty to see what kind of props we should buy or hire To make our film authentic. On the left is a photo of some of our props and on the right is a photo of the props in Casualty Here are some of the props we used Patient Gowns Get Well Soon cards Overshoes Medicine bottles Syringe Breathing Tube Panic button Heart Monitor Drip Stands Hospital beds Thermometer
Editing During our research we watched medical drama ‘Six Feet Under’. From this we Decided to use the idea of a hospital montage including close ups and tracking shots Here is the montage sequence from our film next to the montage sequence from Six Feet Under
Costume We used conventional scrubs outfits for costume We watched the program ‘Scrubs’ to gain this idea This gave our film authenticity and also added colour
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
Titles We wanted to created synergy between our poster and our film so we incorporated the Same font for both which was Prestige. This is also the font used in our PowerPoint presentation. We made poster on Photoshop and the titles for the film on Final Cut Pro
Brightness We also wanted to create synergy through the use of brightness between our Film and poster. In our film we used an extremely bright light to film with and for the poster. We used Photoshop to enhance the brightness and contrast, we used a lot of white
Genre ,[object Object],suggest it’s a hospital drama. -We also included two photos of each character one dark, one light, to emphasise the theme of good vs evil. This therefore creates synergy between our film and poster.
Magazine Review To help promote our film we made A magazine review We looked at other film magazine Reviews to gain idea’s such as Sight And Sound and Empire We used a picture still from our film to help advertise it We used Indesign to make the review As it is easy to use and effective
What have you learned fromyour audience feedback?
FEEDBACK FROM OTHER STUDENTS One main criticism we received was that the ending of our film was not quite powerful enough. Therefore we added layers of sound at the end to emphasise the twist in the story. Here are two clips of our different endings
How did you use media technologies the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Final Cut Pro We used Final Cut Pro to edit and shape our film We first edited the picture down to 10 minutes and then top and tailed it down to 5 We also used Final Cut Pro’s colour wheel to edit the colour of the walls We also used Final Cut Pro to raise or lower the sound levels
Celtx CALL SHEETS SCRIPT INDEX CARDS SHOT LISTS SCHEDULE PROPS LIST SCENE LIST AND BREAKDOWN CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
YouTube FUTURE SHORTS We used YouTube to research other short films, through YouTube we found Future Shorts This film called ‘Bitch’ was very inspiring and helped us understand the framework of short films YouTube was very helpful in allowing us to learn the conventions of short films
Camera To film ‘The Window’ we used a Sony HDV Camera, however we used a separate boom to record the sound MICROPHONE SCREEN LENS
PowerPoint We used PowerPoint presentation to create an evaluation for our film. Here is a screen flow video of an effect we created
Indesign We used Indesign to create our magazine article, here is a screen flow of how we used this tool
Photoshop We used Photoshop to edit photos for our poster and magazine article We used tools such as brightness, contrast and colour balance to edit each photo We wanted this particular photo to be bright to represent good whereas the photo of Adam was edited to look dark and gloomy to represent evil

Notas del editor

  1. Todorov- Beginning middle end Challenge- in our film we have challenged the ending conventions of most films. The ending is normally happy and reassures the viewer that everything will be ok. In The window, the ending is sad and doesn’t make the viewer happy or reassured. It makes the viewer wonder about why everything has happened in the first place.
  2. We chose to use bright lighting for our film ‘The Window’ due to the fact that it is conventional in a film similar to ours, ‘The Black Button’. Both films present the idea of death, murder, greed and jealousy. They both share the same eerie genre and suspense. However we partially chose bright lighting for ‘The Window’ as the film is set in a hospital which is often associated with it’s white walls and bright lamps. Whereas ‘The Button’ is set in purgatory which is more of a spiritual setting therefore the bright lighting is used rather as a symbol of space. The lighting is ‘The Button’ reinforces the theme of pureness and spirituality. Lighting in films usually reinforce the theme of the film so it is a cinematic convention. We chose to use bright lighting for our filmIt is a convention in a film similar to ours, ‘The Black Button’ Our film is set in a hospital which is associated with it’s white walls and bright lamps ‘The Black Button’ is set in purgatory which is between life and death
  3. This should really be about realismFor our film ‘The Window’ we hired several props which matched the conventional aspects of a hospital drama such as Casualty. Here are some examples of the props which we used – ‘drip stands’, ‘breathing tubes’, ‘breathing masks’, ‘overshoes’, ‘patient gowns’, ‘scrubs outfit’, ‘neck brace’ etc. There is a sense of realism due to the fact that we had to hire props from prop companies. The Drip stands had the actual liquid in that is normally used in
  4. For our short film ‘The Window’ we decided to use conventional hospital clothing to create authenticity. For example we dressed our two main characters in patient gowns to show they are sick in a hospital. For our nurse we bought a scrubs outfit which created the effect of a modern day nurse in a blue hospital outfit. We gained our idea’s for these costumes from TV hospital drama’s such as ‘Scrubs’.
  5. When discussing the title, one must look at synergy. We made sure that there was a sense of synergy running through the different media texts. For example our titles at the beginning and end of our film match the font of writing for the title of our poster. We used a prescription style writing to match the hospital drama genre of our short film. We also used plain black and white colored font for each to suggest the serious tone of the drama.
  6. To help create the hospital genre of our film we matched the white brightness of our film to the photo’s and coloring on our poster. We used Photoshop to achieve this. Hospitals are often very plain and white with bright lighting which is why my group and I thought it would be a good idea to present this effect on our short film and on our ancillary texts.
  7. Whilst making our poster we tried to suggest the genre and tone of our film through our titles and photographs. For example the the poster is in the shape of a window which not only matches the title but one of the central themes in our film. On our poster we also have two photo’s: one of Colin (the good man) and one of Adam (the evil man). The photo of Colin is in a white light that he is a good spiritual man. However Adam’s photograph has been blackened suggesting he is evil and belongs in hell. We hope that our poster matches the general feel of our film.
  8. When writing our magazine article we decided to use words which would describe the film and narrative without revealing too much about the storyline it self. We did this to promote the genre and film and we hoped that our artistic language would engage audiences to come and see our film especially as our genre of film is extremely rare therefore it was harder to engages potential viewers. With our magazine article we are hoping to attract people who enjoy emotional and deep movies and also people who enjoy drama and struggle.
  9. To edit our film we used Final Cut pro. This was not only an important technology editing wise but also we were able to put effects for example jump cutting in the death scene to make it a poignant aspect of our film. It makes it easy to be able to shuffle around the footage, make another sequence if need be and also to be able to cut the footage down. The fist time we put our footage in Final Cut Pro, it was hours of footage which we had to get down to 5 minutes. This was possible by cutting or deleting parts of the footage. Final Cut Pro is a media technology that helped in the construction of our film
  10. In Celtx we were able to not only schedule but also we were able to write our scripts and write about what we wanted our character to be like. The technology of Celtx is easy to use and also the design is simple in the fact there is a tool bar which is set out at the top. Celtx is easily downloaded off the internet and can be put on either a mac computer or a windows computer. Celtx can be used as a tool for formatting a script, writing a schedule and writing a report about film
  11. Evaluation (creating an effect on powerpointResearch (six feet under, creepy)We used Youtube and Future Shorts to research other short films in order to understand their structure and conventions. For example we learnt that many short films consist of story which ends with a twist at the end which leaves the audience wanting to see the short film again. The stories are often very clever and witty. However the genre’s appeared limited to comedy and drama as it is difficult to connect with a character in say a romantic movie in the space of five minutes.
  12. The Sony HDV camera we used was one we had never used before. For our foundation portfolio , we used Panasonic DV camera. This was a hand held camera and a lot smaller and compact to the Sony HDV. The Sony HDV camera can be easily used. There are buttons on the side of the camera to record, stop, pause etc. This is a technology imperative in the making of a film. There is a microphone on the top of it so it not only record picture but also sound. We decided to use this microphone as well as a boom due to the fact that we were working inside.
  13. We used the technology of Soundtrack pro Snaps pro
  14. Snaps pro
  15. We used the technology of Photoshop to make our poster. We used this technology instead of in design due to fact that on Photoshop we were able to edit the pictures . We had one picture of Alex Clarke (Adam) in a very dark background to show the evilness and we had Edward Fisher (Colin) in a white background to show the pureness. In Photoshop we were able to write the title of the film at top and the institutional information at the bottom. We were able to put symbols on the title which we decided to have a red cross on the I. We were also able to edit the stars we put on our poster. We wanted them in black for them to stand out more. Using Photoshop, we could change the colour of them.
