2. The entire item is called a “Term” .
The 4 is the number at the front, and is called the “Coefficient”
The „n‟ is the letter part, and is called a “Pronumeral”
The “2” is called an “Index” or “Indice” or a “Power” .
3. 4n2 is a “Term” and so is the number 7.
The 7 is a special Term called a “Constant”.
A Constant is a Number, Decimal, or Fraction,
on its own without any letters.
4. The “Constant” in this expression is -5 (not 5) .
The sign in front of a term
is part of the term, like the
driveway into a house is
part of the home.

5. A “Binomial” is an Algebra Expression with 2 terms.
A “Trinomial” is an Algebra Expression with 3 terms.
6. An Algebra Expression does NOT have an = sign.
An “Equation” does have an Equals sign.
7. Divided by or is written as / or fractions.
is written as the fractions:
or
The “Coefficient” of n2 is 4/3 or four thirds.
8. In Algebra the multiplication symbol is not shown.
Multiplication can involve negative terms:
Note: The “Coefficient” of -3k is -3
9. In the English language, we have to learn that
nouns and verbs have to go in a correct order.
For example, we say that:
“We are going shopping”
And we do not say:
“Shopping going are we”. Image Source: http://smartcanucks.ca
In Algebra, there is also an order that we use for
items that make up Terms and Expressions.
10. In MULTIPLY Algebra Term answers, the sign
goes first, then the number, then the letters.
The MULTIPLY items are put into this order :
Sign - There is no negative sign in this term
Number Coefficient – We put the “2” first
Letter Pronumerals – We put the “h” and the “b”
in Alphabet Order as “bh”
11. The following MULTIPLY term contains a fraction,
which is processed the same as a Coefficient.
The MULTIPLY items are put into this order :
Sign - There is a negative sign which must go first
Number Coefficient – We put the “3/5” next
Letter Pronumerals – We put the “k” and the “c”
in Alphabet Order as “ck”
12. In Algebra Expression Answers, the most complex
Terms go first, and the Constant always goes last.
Notice in add and subtract that the order of letters
and numbers is the opposite of Multiply Terms.
In Multiply, the number goes at the beginning, but
in add & subtract, the number Constant goes last.
13. In Algebra Expression Answers, we do not usually
start with a negative sign. This changes the order.
Usually the constant of “2” would be put last.
However this would make the expression become:
-b + 2 We don’t do this, because it is considered
bad practice to start Expressions with a negative.
14. In Algebra Expression Answers, (as long as we do
not start the answer with a negative sign), the most
complex Terms go first, and the Constant always
goes last. (Constant can be a fraction or decimal).
The following example is a mixed operations sum,
where the constant number is a fraction.
15. What is the Coefficient of k in:
5y + 7ky + 4k ?
ANSWER: 5y + 7ky + 4k
The coefficient of k is +4 or 4
16. What is the Constant in:
5e2h + 7ky -13 + 4k + 3e ?
ANSWER:
5e2h + 7ky -13 + 4k + 3e
The number constant is -13
17. Which Expressions are Trinomials:
A. 5e2h + 7ky -13
B. 4y2 + 6y
C. 3 - 4y2 + 6y
ANSWER: A and C have 3 terms
18. Write this Expression Correctly:
17 divided by 23 x b
ANSWER: Remove x and use /
fraction for divided by
17
23b
