Trench Warfare
To protect there positions and to cut
down on losses. Both sides dug
trenches

At night supplies were brought in and
scouts were sent out

Problems that they had in the trenches
    Mud Rats Smell Bodys Rot staying
    dry maggots lice and diseases

 At dawn/dusk attacks came: hit
  them with artillery and then went
  over the top of enemy trenches
   They had to go through
    Barbwire, Machinegun fire and
    other problems

Sinking of
             the Lusitania
• It was a passenger ship that was secretly
  carrying ammunitions
• A German submarine sunk the ship
• 1,198 passengers died ( 128 of them were
  Americans)
• President Wilson demanded Germans to
  apologize and pay for all damages.

• Sussex Pledge (Germany promised not to sink
   merchant ships without warning them and
   rescuing all passengers)
• By 1917 Germany was defeating Russia
  to do this they used submarine warfare
• They sunk all ships headed towards allied
   nations.
Zimmerman Note
• Zimmerman was a German
  official he sent out a letter
  to Mexico asking them to
  attack on the United States.
• In exchange the Germans
  would aid them to get there
  land back (Texas, New
  Mexico, Arizona ect.)
• This was intercepted by the
  U.S and was handled well
  between Mexico and the U.S

The U.S
• General Pershing led The U.S troops
• By july 1918 the U.S has 1 million troops in the
  war
• We cut off the German rail lines which supply
  their troops
• We attack through the Argonne Forest. It takes
  47 days and 1.2 million soldiers but we cut off
  their supply
Germany in war
• By 1917 Germany controlled: Belgium Italy
  and N. France
• 1918 Russia has a revolution and they drop
  out of the war
• Now Germany can concentrate on the
  Western front
• But by October German lines are crumbling
• And just one month later the allies captured
  the high ground and Germany surrenders

• Russia= Finland, Lavita, Lithuania, Estonia, and
  Poland
• Austria/Hungary= Austria, Hungary,
  Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia
• Ottoman Empire= Divide up controled by
  Allies
Germanys Punishment
• Germany must accept full responsibility
• Took away their colonies, coal fields and areas
  of Alsace and Lorraine
• Greatly reduced Germanys Armed Forces
• Forced them to pay 33 billion dollars to the
  allies
• They were only able to pay 4.5 billion
League of Nations
• An Organization of nations established at the
  end of WW1 to maintain a world stability
