3. Arizona’s largest family-focused homeless shelter, UMOM’s
continuum of services and shelter options assists approximately
170 families at a time. In addition to domestic violence and basic
needs shelters, the nonprofit maintains a child development
center, a wellness center, and the Next Step Housing Program. The
latter initiative is a vital transitional service designed to assist
homeless adults in forming a firm foundation of educational and
professional skills that translate into sustainable employment
options. The Next Step Housing Program also provides families
with cost-effective permanent housing options in newly
constructed one- to three-bedroom apartment units. These
apartments are strictly reserved for families at risk of
homelessness and those who have spent time in UMOM’s
transitional and emergency shelters.
