The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: a portrait of health social media trends and anti-vaccination. This presentation was made for the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Service. Global Health Unit Open Seminar – 6th August 2013 In this presentation, we will introduce how social media is being used in transforming communication with patients. We will use study cases, such as the ‘zombi invasion’ organised by the CDC and online puzzles for biomedical research, to provide an overview of current trends. In addition, we will present research conducted at Norut (Northern Research Institute) about the challenges of finding trustworthy health social media. Our focus will be directed towards harmful online communities promoting anorexia as a lifestyle or anti-vaccination online groups.

This presentation is prepared as a part of my talk on the openness (open data and open science) in the context of Society 5.0 during the International Conference and Expo on Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials. It was very pleasant to receive an invitation to deliver the talk on my recently published article Smarter Open Government Data for Society 5.0: Are Your Open Data Smart Enough? (Sensors 2021, 21(15), 5204), which I have entitled as “Open Data as a driver of Society 5.0: how you and your scientific outputs can contribute to the development of the Super Smart Society and transformation into Smart Living?“. The paper has been briefly discussed in my previous post, thus, just a few words on this talk and overall experience.

At the 2009 Seminar on Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics into Knowledge (http://www.oecd.org/progress/ict/statknowledge), jointly organized by the OECD, US Census Bureau and World Bank, we proposed and demo'd a proof of concept on data sharing between international organizations. We demonstrated how open source tools could sit on top of existing infrastructure and reused visualization tools to show how data could be pulled and combined from the various organizations on the fly.

Data Haven Technology for purposes of this discussion is any data distribution support technology incorporating a de-identification standard to mitigate privacy threats and specifically confers anonymity from reconstruction of explicit human identity associated with micro-data. Corporations that track real-time consumer propensities may be inclined to share their data during a disaster incident if appropriate indemnification exists. Addressing the current gap for a de-identification standard and embedding this in an incident response context via Open Data Haven Technology could facilitate corporate sharing of real-time data especially during disaster incidents.

Big data refer to the ongoing accumulation of massive, often complex and always-changing data sets – for instance, machine-generated data from sensors or cell phone GPS signals. Or it may be data from social media sites. Open data are data sets made available to the public to use and reuse. Those sets may come from Big Data but they don’t have to.The act of opening data is like extending an invitation to anyone to freely take the data and turn it into something useful.

La sociedad cívica tiene algunas expectativas básicas: Gente e instituciones, incluyendo gobiernos, deben comportarse según las leyes y la ética de la sociedad. Sin embargo, hoy en día la tecnología presta capacidades inesperadas y no bien conocidas. Estas tecnologías pueden chocar con la ética y las leyes de la sociedad. En particular, en sociedades modernas hay la expectativa de la privacidad de individuos y organizaciones. En esta charla examinamos varias tecnologías que en muchos casos contradicen nuestras expectativas en cuanto a la privacidad. Veamos bases de datos estadísticos donde consultas deberían guardar la privacidad de los datos de individuos y varias tecnologías que permiten el monitoreo de la ubicación o el comportamiento de una persona o de las comunicaciones de la misma. También examinamos problemas relacionados con el uso de criptografía y el uso de marcas de agua, entro varios. En muchos casos, la tecnología compromete la privacidad, en algunos casos, presta más privacidad que es deseable.

Abstract: Big Data concern large-volume, complex, growing data sets with multiple, autonomous sources. Answer: Big Data: Big data means really a big data, it is a collection of large datasets that cannot be processed using traditional computing techniques. Big data is not merely a data, rather it has become a complete subject, which involves various tools, technqiues and frameworks. Big data involves the data produced by different devices and applications. Given below are some of the fields that come under the Big Data. Black Box Data : It is a component of helicopter, airplanes, and jets, etc. It captures voices of the flight crew, recordings of microphones and earphones, and the performance information of the aircraft. Social Media Data : Social media such as Facebook and Twitter hold information and the views posted by millions of people across the globe. Stock Exchange Data : The stock exchange data holds information about the ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ decisions made on a share of different companies made by the customers. Power Grid Data : The power grid data holds information consumed by a particular node with respect to a base station. Transport Data : Transport data includes model, capacity, distance and availability of a vehicle. Search Engine Data : Search engines retrieve lots of data from different databases. Cunningham SoK: Privacy on Mobile Devices – It’s Complicated Abstract: Modern mobile devices place a wide variety of sensors and services within the personal space of their users. As a result, these devices are capable of transpar- ently monitoring many sensitive aspects of these users’ lives (e.g., location, health, or correspondences). Users typically trade access to this data for convenient applications and features, in many cases without a full appre- ciation of the nature and extent of the information that they are exposing to a variety of third parties. Never- theless, studies show that users remain concerned about their privacy and vendors have similarly been increas- ing their utilization of privacy-preserving technologies in these devices. Still, despite significant efforts, these technologies continue to fail in fundamental ways, leav- ing users’ private data exposed. In this work, we survey the numerous components of mobile devices, giving particular attention to those that collect, process, or protect users’ private data. Whereas the individual components have been generally well studied and understood, examining the entire mobile de- vice ecosystem provides significant insights into its over- whelming complexity. The numerous components of this complex ecosystem are frequently built and controlled by different parties with varying interests and incen- tives. Moreover, most of these parties are unknown to the typical user. The technologies that are employed to protect the users’ privacy typically only do so within a small slice of this ecosystem, abstracting away the greater complexity of the system. Our analysis suggests that this abstracted complexity is the major cause of many privacy-related vulnerabilities, and that a funda- mentally new, holistic, approach to privacy is needed going forward. We thus highlight various existing technology gaps and propose several promising research di- rections for addressing and reducing this complexity. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
