At the 2009 Seminar on Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics into Knowledge (http://www.oecd.org/progress/ict/statknowledge), jointly organized by the OECD, US Census Bureau and World Bank, we proposed and demo'd a proof of concept on data sharing between international organizations. We demonstrated how open source tools could sit on top of existing infrastructure and reused visualization tools to show how data could be pulled and combined from the various organizations on the fly.

We are all connected. Communities are made up of shared relationships, whether social, professional, or informational. Yet it is often tempting to think of communities at the level of the individual, where we nurture the projects and information needs of public, academic, or corporate patrons. Given that our mission is to connect people and resources, we must acknowledge that our communities are embedded in a networked world and understand how information and human resources flow. What better a view than seeing the whole picture through the fundamentals of the network? In this rapid-fire presentation, discover how viruses spread, how scientists collaborate, and how close we are to our most remote community members. Using a pilot project examining scientists’ participation in international DNA data repository, this lightening talk will provide an example of some possibilities afforded by insight into network structure. Discover how R can be used to create simple network visualizations, and get data set ideas such as public circulation and Twitter data to use for your own network exploration. While “Big Data” is an oft-used buzzword, there is great power in the aggregate. Leveraging it to understand your community network is an important tool to keep in your back pocket, if not only to maintain 6 degrees from Mr. Bacon, but also to also establish and cultivate community connections, support public and organizational services, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

ATHack! Inc. (pronounced “attack”) is a group of activists and technologists sourcing, funding, and launching new and innovative data-driven ideas to solve major social issues. Our inaugural hackathon is focused on developing tools and solutions that will support anti-human trafficking efforts. Viable projects that come out of our hackathons are invited to apply to our accelerator program in order to become sustainable operations that can help the community. We deeply encourage multi-cultural and multi-gendered diversity in attendance of our hackathons, seeking to grow entrepreneurship among women and people of color. Finding innovative solutions to community issues can only be done thoughtfully and holistically by engaging all aspects of our multi-cultural and multi-gendered community. Types of tech projects we look to catalyze include, but are not limited to: data centric models to fighting human trafficking, software/hardware tech solutions for poverty afflicted populations, resource solutions for the homeless, etc.

This is the presentation of the keynote I gave to the The "Software Codes of Democracy: Web Platforms for New Politics Workshop, which was held in Milan, Italy 13-15 Sept 2013 http://codicidellademocrazia.partecipate.it/ Abstract Social media are increasingly used to support online debate and facilitate citizens’ engagement in policy and decision-making. Nevertheless the online dialogue spaces we see on the Web today typically provide flat listings of comments, or threads that can be viewed by ‘subject’ line. These are fundamentally chronological views which offer no insight into the logical structure of the ideas, such as the coherence or evidential basis of an argument. This hampers both quality of citizens’ participation and effective assessment of the state of the debate. Within the landscape of existing community debate and ideation tools, the talk will introduce a new class of emerging online deliberation platforms – coming from research on Hypermedia, Collective Intelligence and Argumentation – that enable more structured, engaging and transparent online deliberation processes. The talk will focus on the description of some of these technologies and summarise research studies in which they have been used to effectively support online deliberation in the Education, Healthcare and Public sector. The talk will conclude proposing reflections and future research on collective intelligence and online deliberation platforms to socially innovate and to re-engage citizens with the democratic process.

The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe.
