This document summarizes the redesign of an OpenURL resolver menu system at Western Michigan University Libraries. The libraries investigated user needs through literature reviews and stakeholder interviews. They developed tools like persistent URLs and real-time help to meet identified needs. The redesigned menu used icons and simplified links, and was tested with stakeholders before being launched in 2007. Usage continues to be monitored and improvements made to further enhance access to library resources.

Online libraries became essential source for both faculty and research members in order to obtain knowledge about different fields of sciences. Students all over the world are using for their researches the materials available on online libraries so that they can accomplish their tasks and day-to-day researches. An e-library database is used to store information according to its users. The documents stored in those database locations are called media where they are books and journals. The e-library must keep track of the status of each media item: its location, status, descriptive attributes, and cost for losses and late returns. Books will be identified by their ID. Abstract: The production of high-quality open textbooks requires the collaboration of different contributors. This work conducts a comparative analysis of the six different collaborative platforms for the production of books. To be able to compare the platforms, several dimensions extracted from literature of collaborative writing and the requirements associated with open textbooks are described and used. As conclusion of the study, it is clear that Connexions is currently the best option for the collaborative production of open textbooks although it lacks some basic functionality. This work recommend the creation of a new breed of platforms that better support the producers of open textbooks that inherit all the successful capabilities of the current generation.

Barbara Albee & Oliver Chen, Indiana University, School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis The purpose of this project is to examine the implementation of an open source library automation system, Evergreen, in Indiana public libraries and its impact to library users. Nine public libraries from the Evergreen Indiana consortium are invited to participate in the project. The research team recruits library users at the nine libraries with the assistance from local librarians. The users are classified into three age groups: 18-24, 25-59 and 60 or above. The research team has collected data from the first two quarters in 2010 and reports preliminary results from the two quarters. Preliminary correlation-coefficient analyses indicate participants’ use of the library system’s functions are related to age, frequency of visits to local library in the last 12-months, level of use of the previous library system and the Evergreen system. Participants; use of the Evergreen system has potential to change the way they use library services and collections.

Next Steps for IMLS's National Digital Platform

This keynote, at the Upper Midwest Digital Collections Conference, provides and update on the National Digital Platform and 20 projects supported to enhance it. The national digital platform is a way of thinking about and approaching the digital capability and capacity of libraries across the US. In this sense, it is the combination of software applications, social and technical infrastructure, and staff expertise that provide library content and services to all users in the US. As libraries increasingly use digital infrastructure to provide access to digital content and resources, there are more and more opportunities for collaboration around the tools and services that they use to meet their users’ needs. It is possible for each library in the country to leverage and benefit from the work of other libraries in shared digital services, systems, and infrastructure. We need to bridge gaps between disparate pieces of the existing digital infrastructure, for increased efficiencies, cost savings, access, and services. To this end, IMLS is focusing on the national digital platform as an area of priority in the National Leadership Grants to Libraries program and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program. We are eager to explore how this way of thinking and approaching infrastructure development can help states make the best use of the funds they receive through the Grants to States program. We’re also eager to work with other foundations and funders to maximize the impact of our federal investment

This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia.
