The ED product range is designed for harsh environments. The digital output port line are implemented as protected output circuits, providing current overload and short circuit protection, voltage surge, overload and open circuit protection and over temperature protection to allow the widest possible usage and range of devices. In protected mode the output switches off, no current flows, device cools down.This Device Shutdown state can be read back by the user or be viewed on the web page.Overcurrent and short circuit protection are very desirable features in an industrial product giving it a ruggedness that should result in it having a reputation for surviving whatever mishandling is thrown at itOver Volt Protection provides a clamp on the voltage between the output pin and the ground pin so both motors & relays to be driven safely without damage to output circuitry.Short Circuit and Over Load ProtectionShort circuit and overload protection is of great value in an industrial environment when caused either by accidently shorting output pin to ground or by shorts in the external connected circuit. When a ED-588 is initially short circuited the current increases until the current reaches 1.7Amp, the overcurrent limitation value, the current then flows at this maximum value. Over time the ED-588 output device heats up, reaching the over temperature limit at which point the device goes into thermal shutdown and the current stops flowing. The devices that potentially can cause most damage during short circuits are inductive and capacitive loads during start up and self-induced voltages during shutdown. Inductive loads like motors temporarily pass large current loads at start up and these are limited to the over current limitation value, after a short time the motor then operates at its safe, rated current load. During operation a motor may stall or slip due to friction, a more dangerous condition, the persistent high current cause thermal shutdown so preventing permanent damage to the motor. When capacitive loads are switched the inrush current can be 10 times the steady state current and when cold resistive loads such as incandescent light bulbs are turned on momentarily high currents may flow, the over current protection switches in and the maximum current allowed to flow is Ilim. After time these loads will move to be within steady state, normal operating parameters.Self-induced voltages can produce momentary high voltage and energy spikes. The ED-588 clamps outputs to prevent damage to its output circuitry.The short circuit protection works up to a lower voltage, 24V, than the clamp voltage, 60V.
