online and watch videos posted by other

3. CREATION AND HISTORY
OF YOUTUBE
YouTube was created in February of
2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley,
and Jawed Karim, all former
employees of PayPal. The site
made its official debut in November
of that year.
The website quickly took off and
was reaching twenty million people
per month by the summer of 2006.
In October 2006, Google bought
YouTube for $1.65 billion.
5. PURPOSE
YouTube allows anybody with access to the internet to watch
videos about any topic or subject imaginable. They can be
educational, inspirational, music videos, vlogs (video blogs),
sketch comedy, promotional, etc., etc…
In addition to internet access, those who have the right
equipment can record and upload their own videos for
everyone to see. Many people like to create videos as an
enjoyable hobby, while most companies use the site for
promotional purposes through both advertisements and
uploading their own videos.
6. HOW IS YOUTUBE
USED?
Education: While YouTube is used more for entertainment,
there are many educational videos on the website as well.
Teachers will sometimes used these videos to support a
lesson or convey a message in a way that students can really
connect to.
Home: The site is used much more leisurely in the home, as
families will often watch videos that they find funny or
otherwise entertaining.
Business: Businesses can use advertisements, which are
prevalent on YouTube, to promote their products and/or
services. They can also reach out to their customers through
videos they upload themselves.
7. PROFITS
While YouTube doesn’t charge people
to use the site, they still have many
ways to make money.
• Advertising
• Profits of Google
• Users can rent full-length movies
and television show episodes
8. SIMILAR WEBSITES
While YouTube is by far the most popular video-sharing
service online, there are other sites that offer similar
provisions:
• Vimeo
• Dailymotion
• Metacafe
• Break

11. YOUTUBE IOS APP GETS
LIVE STREAMING SUPPORT
Mashable – www.mashable.com
The YouTube application for the iPhone and iPad recently
received a system update. The most notable new feature in
the update was support for videos that stream live.
12. JOBS AT YOUTUBE
One might think that, as a site that allows its users to upload
videos themselves, YouTube wouldn’t have much of a need
for workers. However, YouTube is actually a large company
based in San Bruno, California, and just like any other
company, they hire many workers to help run the site.
One position that seemed particularly interesting to me was
that of Marketing Programs Manager. This position is
responsible for the site’s mobile marketing programs and
working directly with mobile partners on ways to promote the
website.
