The document discusses how a media product draws upon conventions from real media. It notes that the narrative of the video followed the story in the song's lyrics. It also used conventions like having the singer perform in multiple locations, playing a dual role in the narrative and performance, and using close-ups of instruments being played. To differentiate past and present scenes, some videos desaturate or use black and white for the past as was done in this media product. Consistency of color theme and images is also used in print media products like posters and CD covers to make clear they come from the same band, and this convention was employed as well.
3. 1. Follows a narrative The story from the video needed to be the same as the story from the lyrics, so we followed the narrative of the song to create the narrative for our video. Example from real media product: "Sitting here on this lonely dock" (Joshua Radin - I'd Rather be with you.) Example from our video: "I was sipping on a whiskey when I got the call."
4. 2. Multiple performance locations In some music videos, the band/singer performs in more then one location. We decided to use this convention to keep the shots of our singer from being too boring by always going back to the same location. Example from real media product: “The Road” (Frank Turner) Example from our own video.
5. 3. Dual Role of Singer Some music videos also have their singer/band as a part of the narrative part of their video. We decided to use this convention, as the narrative of our song, is about his personal experience of loosing his friend, therefore we thought it would be right for him to be in the narrative part of video as well as performing. Example from real media product: “Iris” (Goo Goo Dolls) Example from our own video.
6. 4. Close Up of Instruments being played A convention used a lot in music videos is close up shots. This includes not just people in the video, but equipment and instruments. This is a convention we decided to use in our video because we liked the effect it created in other real media products. Example from real media product: “Viva la Vida” (Coldplay) Example from our own video.
7. 5. Differentiating Past and Present Some narrative videos require past memories to be shown during the video. So these are not confused with present clips, thy are usually desaturated or made black and white. We decided to use this convention so our audience could differentiate between the past and present in our video. Example from real media product: “Fall for You” (Secondhand Serenade) Example from our own video.
9. 1. Use/Lack of colour Example from real media product: Joshua Radin Example from our own video.
10. 2. Consistency Posters and CD covers usually have the same colour theme and basic image on so they are easily recognisable as being from the same band, therefore we decided to use this convention. Example from real media product: Joshua Radin
