…don’t you picture the snowbirds who Short
travel South in the Winter for mild To
weather RV living? Wait

Someday!



Well, that’s not us – we do things a bit
differently from the norm – just ask our Life is
family! Too
Our fulltime RV living choice found us Short
on the banks of the Missouri River To
where we currently work as camphosts Wait
at a private campground and are For
getting ready to spend our third year of Someday!
Winter camping in Missouri where the
weather can be balmy one day and
brutal the next.



Life is
Lots of people think we’re crazy . . . Too
crazy for this lifestyle of full time RV Short
living, but even crazier for spending the To
Winter in Missouri when we could be in Wait
Arizona or Florida or Texas where the For
Winters are warm and sunny. Someday!

Oh well – we’re accustomed to raised Too
eyebrows! We had those same Short
destinations in mind until the To
campground owner hired us for the Wait
year-round job and we fell in love with For
the beautiful setting on the banks of Someday!
the Missouri River.

We decided Winter camping in the cold Short
and snow would be a new experience To
to add to our adventurous full time RV Wait
living journeys. For

Maybe it was the challenge to figure Too
out how to comfortably survive RV Short
living in Winter that drew us in, or To
maybe it was the Universe telling us Wait
that it was time to change our For
perception of Winter. (we are big time Someday!
complainers of snow and cold.)
Actually, it was both!

Little did we realize that our first Too
experience of RV living in Winter Short
weather would occur during the To
BLIZZARD of 2011! Little did we realize Wait
how much our perspective would be For
tried and tested when the total Someday!
snowfall for the Winter set a new
record for our area . . . 43 inches to be
exact!

Our preparations for RV living in Winter Too
weather were valuable lessons in Short
survival. Our only Winter preparations To
previous to this was to keep the snow Wait
shovel and ice melt handy by the front For
door. Someday!

We spent hours Googling tips from Too
other RVers. It took some digging to Short
find the right information since most To
tips for winterizing an RV focused on Wait
preparing the RV for Winter storage – For
not RV living IN Winter. Someday!

We made countless trips to Too
Lowes, Westlakes, and Bass Pro to ask Short
for assistance with our RV living in To
Winter project. (again, the raised Wait
eyebrows from the clerks who tried to For
help us!) Someday!

The most valuable resource of all was

found at a local mobile home supplier.

It was there the answers to all our

questions were answered by

knowledgeable people who knew how

For starters, all of the pipes, inside and Too
outside that I could manage to reach Short
were wrapped in foam pipe insulation. To
The empty spaces around the pipes and Wait
holding tanks were filled with For
insulation. Someday!

The inside ceiling vents were covered Too
with plastic to help keep the cold air Short
out. Easy to do – familiar tasks to any To
homeowner . . . And especially Wait
essential for RV living in areas where For
bitter cold and snow and ice assault Someday!
you for several months.

I read several suggestions of covering Too
the windows as well to keep out the Short
cold, but just couldn’t bring myself to To
block my view, especially since I can Wait
look out my window and watch the For
river - it is my saving grace while holed Someday!
up inside while the snow flies and the
temperatures plummet.

This kind of view is what makes RV To
living so worthwhile. Wait

We quickly learned that for RV living in Too
Winter weather, it was necessary to Short
protect our water supply and the sewer To
hose from freezing temperatures. With Wait
the help of the staff at the mobile For
home store, we designed a water hose Someday!
from a small plastic pipe fitted with
connections to the campground water
pump and our camper.

This pipe was wrapped in an electric To
heat tape, which was then wrapped in Wait
foam pipe insulation. For
Someday!



Life is
Our flexible sewer hose was inserted Too
into a larger pvc pipe for added Short
insulation. It took a few tweaks to find To
the right elbows for the pipe, but we Wait
did it! Now the outside hoses were For
protected and we had a protected Someday!
water supply for our first RV living
experience with Winter camping!

These fixes worked great to protect our Too
water supply and sewer hose; Short
but, when we unhooked everything to To
take a road trip, we soon realized how Wait
“EXACT” our parking had to be when For
we returned home. Someday!



It took several attempts of backing up – Life is
pulling in a little closer – backing up – Too
pulling to the right a little more – nope Short
– angle it more to the left . . . over and To
over until the pipes lined up just right Wait
for reconnecting. Normally, no big deal For
to do this – but it was bitterly cold that Someday!
day. Just another part of the process of
learning the art of RV living in Winter
weather.

As we began our second season of RV Short
living in Missouri’s Winter, we looked To
for other solutions that would help us Wait
easily and quickly reconnect our hoses. For
We had to find more flexibility. Someday!

Google searching came through again Too
as we researched more ways to survive Short
in Winter weather. The next To
Winter, our water hose was wrapped in Wait
heavy duty aluminum foil, followed by For
the heat tape, followed by the foam Someday!
pipe wrap.

Too
We also purchased a super heavy duty Short
sewer hose that is able to withstand To
frigid temps. Now we had flexibility! Wait
No more rigid pipes to reconnect when For
we arrive back at the campground. Someday!

One of the most treasured discoveries Short
in preparing for RV living in Winter was To
the electric radiator heater. These Wait
heaters work well as a supplemental For
heat source in small spaces and stay Someday!
warm without using much electricity.

Because natural convection distributes Too
the heat, there’s no fan to make Short
noise, making them incredibly quiet. To
We didn’t have to run the furnace Wait
constantly, never had to worry about For
running out of propane in the middle of Someday!

camper.

With all those fixes in place, the only Too
big problem we encountered for Short

condensation that built up under our Wait

The solution? Create an air space Life is

the bed. I headed to Lowes with Short
measurements in hand and asked for To
help figuring out my crazy idea. Wait
Luckily, I was helped by someone who For
knew exactly what we needed - boards Someday!
to use as slats and 1/2 inch foam board
to lay on top of the slats and
underneath the foam mattress.

Now the air can circulate . . . and the Short

were snuggled safely in our camper.

The next day, we were like little kids. Short

have missed sinking up to our thighs in

snow – just like we did when we were

three years old and three feet tall!

January morning when I headed to the Short
river, wrapped in my sub-zero sleeping To
bag, camera and coffee in hand . . . and Wait
watched the glorious dance of the gulls For
swooping and swirling with grace and Someday!
majesty.
