What is an average?
A measure of central tendency is often
called the average of a set of data. There
are, however, various ways of calculating
the “average” of a set of data. These
include:
Mean Mode Median
4. Unit 2 – Data Analysis & Interpretation
Outcome 2-2: Use measures of central tendency to support decisions.
Mean
The mean is the sum of a set of numbers divided
by the number of numbers in the set.
On your first five consumer math tests, you
received the following scores: 70%, 94%, 82%,
96%, 70%
Find the mean score of your test results.
Solution
(70% + 94% + 82% + 96% + 70%) ÷ 5 = 82.4
5. Unit 2 – Data Analysis & Interpretation
Outcome 2-2: Use measures of central tendency to support decisions.
Mode
The mode is the number which occurs most often
in a set of numbers (if all values occur only once,
there would be no mode). It is possible to have
more than one mode.
On your first five consumer math tests, you
received the following scores: 70%, 94%, 82%,
96%, 70%
Find the mode score of your test results.
Solution 70%

Outcome 2-2: Use measures of central tendency to support decisions.
Median
The median is the middle number of a set of data
when the data are arranged in numerical order.
On your first five consumer math tests, you
received the following scores: 70%, 94%, 82%,
96%, 70%
Find the median score of your test results.
Solution
70% 70% 82% 94% 96%
7. Unit 2 – Data Analysis & Interpretation
Outcome 2-2: Use measures of central tendency to support decisions.
Example Problem
Marcelo received
the following test
scores on his last
six test: 80%,
84%, 62%, 96%,
80%, 75%
Find the mean,
mode, and
median score for
his test results.
8. Unit 2 – Data Analysis & Interpretation
Outcome 2-2: Use measures of central tendency to support decisions.
Example Problem
Suppose Marcelo
wrote a seventh
test in which he
got 100%. How
would this test
result change his
mean, mode, and
median?

Adjusting Measures of
Central Tendency
A computer sales department consists of 3 levels. At each
level, the annual salary for each employee is the same.
Salaries are indicated in the table below. Find the mean,
mode, and median for the annual salaries
Level Number of
Employees
Annual
Salary of
Each
Employee
Managers 2 $76 000
Technicians 3 $40 000
Salespeople 5 $28 000

Adjusting Measures of Central Tendency
Create a list of five numbers from 0 – 10
having the following characteristics:
a) The mean is 6
b) The median is 7
c) The mode is 3
