This document outlines the syllabus for a Human Resource Management course taught by Dr. Emad Rahim at Morrisville State College during the Fall 2009 semester. The course objectives are to help students develop an understanding of HR principles, policies, and practices related to recruitment, development, utilization and evaluation of human resources. Key topics covered include foundations of HRM, diversity, ethics, labor laws, planning, recruitment, training, performance management, compensation and benefits. The class structure involves lectures, discussions, exercises, presentations and case studies. Student expectations include completing readings, assignments, tests, class participation and team projects. Grading is based on assignments, projects, exams, participation and attendance.
28. 60 – Below (F)Late Assignment Policy: The granting of any assignment extension of incomplete request is up the discretion of the instructor. Extension on assignments must be requested in writing prior to the due date. Students that have experienced an uncontrolled emergency or sickness that caused them to get behind on their assignment are encouraged to make a formal extension request. A doctor’s note or other proof of sickness or emergency may be requested by the instructor as proof. <br />Assignments are due at the start of the class session on their due date. Assignments may be submitted via email (attached file)or fax by prior arrangement with the instructor if the student will not be able to attend class. Assignments will be penalized one letter grade for each 24-hour period they are late. Late or make-up exams will not be given except under exceptional documented circumstances at the sole discretion of the instructor. There will be no make-up work for any oral presentations, midterm assignment, group presentation and the final project. <br />Incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably missed at the semester’s end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed by the student. Be proactive, last minute requests will not likely be honored. An incomplete grade must be resolved within two (2) weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester. Answers need to be written in complete sentences and paragraphs. Answers need to add value to the subject matter using supportive references and opinions. Answers should not be open ended – be a critical thinker and think outside the box. <br />Midterm exam: The midterm exam will cover the materials from the first seven classes, the theories, concepts, research and component of HR Management. The midterm will be a multiple choice test, consisting of 50 questions. You will be given an hour to complete the test during class time. <br />Group Project: You will be grouped into a team in the first week of class. Your team will be asked to review a case study, where your team will be asked to distinguish and articulate the critical issue(s) in an organization. Your team will than conduct a formal presentation to the class where you will present your case study, findings and solutions. The presentation and notes should display the depth of your team’s knowledge and understanding of course concepts by applying principles that your team have learned while dealing with issues of newly emerging data. Your team will also be judge on how well you learned to communicate and work with each other. <br />Finals: Final assignment will be a research project. The assignment will be reviewed in class in week 13. <br />
