• A broad-based online gateway to development information, hosted at
the Institute of Development Studies, UK.
• Knowledge sharing and dissemination role, supporting the the
documentation, exchange and use of evidence-based development
information
• Communicate this knowledge effectively through a range of
appropriately designed services, using the internet as the main delivery
channel
• Prioritise developing country publications
• High demand: 150,000 visitors/month – roughly 1/3 in the South

5. ‘new innovations’ - Eldis OnDisc
• Eldis OnDisc CD-ROM programme being rolled out
now for users with poor internet connectivity.
• Currently general disc only (ca. 850 documents), but a
thematic agriculture disc planned
• Free to all subscribers!
6. ‘new innovations’ -
Eldis Community
• Online ‘social networking’- type platform
• Aim to facilitate better interaction with our users, support online
community formation (including CoP), and provide interactive space
for posting messages, documents, holding group discussions, and
project spaces.
• Powerful networking tool, increases exposure to other but related
development communities.
• Email integration for those with slow connections
• Free to all subscribers!
7. • Research consortium aiming to encourage critical debate
and policy dialogue on the future of agriculture in Africa
• Working with local partner organisations in Malawi,
Ethiopia and Kenya
• Themes: Policy processes, growth and social protection,
agricultural commercialisations, and now technology and
innovation.

8. Forthcoming technology/Innovation theme will address, among others:
• How can agricultural technology be made to work for the poor?
What are the implications for technology choice and priority setting
mechanisms?
• How are technology trajectories linked to processes of
agrarian/livelihood change in different settings?
• What should be the roles of public and private sectors (both
international and national) in technology development?
• How is access to technology options constrained? What
alternatives exist?
• How should national/regional innovation systems look to deliver
inputs for small farmers?

OK, so this is what the subject guide homepage looks like. It has a similar layout with a featured document at the top, new additions to the guide underneath, search bar at the top left, and links to guide content as well as broader links out to Eldis website features. But whats most interesting here is the column of subject subthemes on the right, some which are obviously directly linked to agriculture ( such as the themes of farmer participation in research and agricultural credit and insurance), but others demonstrate the wider links agriculture has with other areas, such as biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods and food marketing and pricing. But now lets have a closer look at one of the document summaries, in this case I’ll link to the feature at the top, which is actually a recent FAO / ILO / IUF publication….
