COURSE GLOBAL GOALS):
By the end of this course, most students will be able to:
1. demonstrate critical thinking skills and decision-making capabilities
relative to individual and global wellness.
2. integrate and apply multiple dimensions of wellness.
3. be empowered to develop a proactive view toward wellness and the
challenges throughout the life cycle.
4. identify positive behaviors and risk factors related to each of the
dimensions of wellness.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this course, most students will be able to:
1. identify factors that influence an individual's ability to successfully
change health behaviors
2. identify the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the U.S.
3. identify personal risk factors for illness, disease and death based on
behavior and family history
4. identify the interrelationship among the physical, mental,
intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional, occupational and
environmental dimensions of health and wellness.
2. Course Description: Through lecture and discussion, the student will
investigate a variety of health issues facing them in today’s society. The
intent of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the “wellness”
concept, assisting the students in dealing with life’s choices or lifestyles.
Three lecture hours per week are provided. Students may exempt
through a testing procedure, scheduled within the first week of class. All
students (except nursing and B.S.Biology) who matriculate at Salem
State College will be required to complete this course.
Requirements:
1. Attendance 10%
2. class improv. skits 10%
3. pop quiz and homeworks 20%
3. Tests (3 tests-drop one) 60%
Attendance Policy:
Attendance is required. If more than 6 classes are missed, lack of
attendance will result in an incomplete grade for the course. 10 minutes
late for class equals no credit.
Make-up policy: 3 tests given. There are no make-ups.
Tentative dates for tests:
October 14, November 18, December 9.
Tests: All based on our text: mostly multiple choice, true /false and
short answer. Each of 2 counted tests is worth 30% total grade. No final
is given.
Homework: Online you have worksheets, articles and quizzes,
corresponding to chapter material. As we cover the text, worksheets will
be assigned with due dates. These and pop quizzes constitute 20% of
grade. There are no additional time limits for assignments.
Pop Quizzes: There will be intermittent pop quizzes which will
constitute 10 % of the grade
