Beware of the Self-Proclaimed Online Marketing Coach!
1. Beware of the Self-
Proclaimed Online
Marketing Coach!
If you are in the MLM business, you have probably been approached either via email or
a phone call by a self-proclaimed online marketing coach! He/she has promised to "work
with you" and help you build your business online! Let me give you an analogy that many
of you might be able to relate to! I have decided to promote myself as an online football
coach! Work with me and you will become a better football coach, and I will propel you
and your team to new heights of success on the field! You sign up for my program! I
make you an offer you can't pass on! I will charge you around 40 bucks for the first
month and then charge you a $50 monthly fee to keep coaching you! You sign up
looking forward to all the great coaching tips you will get from me!
Now that you have signed up, you want to learn how to put together your offense. You
click on setting up the offense and lo and behold, I have a nicely designed playbook that
has been put together by a self-proclaimed offensive genius! For $150, you can buy this
playbook and get it immediately as a PDF file! And by the way, if you become an
affiliate, you can link this wonderful playbook to your website and receive commissions
every time someone purchases a playbook off your website! Not a bad deal, so you go
with it!
You move on to defense! You click on the "Building Your Defense" training only to find
that there is another playbook that you will need to purchase! It's $150 and has been
designed by a defensive guru. You can also advertise his playbook on your website and
receive more commissions. You navigate to the special teams and this time you get to
purchase a video called "Become a Special Teams Genius". You receive a 30 minute
video with insight from the self-proclaimed special teams gurus. This video can be
purchased for $30.00.
Now it's time to recruit some players. You click on some training about recruiting players
only to find that the self-proclaimed online coach who is coaching you is now wanting
you to quit your team and join his team! Hmmm! You have spent over $300 trying to
master the art of coaching and build your own team only to find that the real agenda
here is to pull you away from your team and get you onboard his!
I see this happening in our industry! People who are desperately trying to build their
MLM business are being lured in by these self-proclaimed online marketing coaches
who promise that you will never have to chase your friends and family. You can build an
online empire simply by joining a system. But here's what I experienced. Once joining
the system, you will learn that the hidden agenda behind this is not training at all! It's a
two-fold agenda.
1) Once in the system, you will be hit up with an endless stream of offers for more
training all of which will suck your wallet dry, 2) You can next expect that the person who
recruited you into this online "coaching" system will now pitch his or her "primary
opportunity."
Now is any of this bad? I guess it depends on who you ask! I think the key here is
knowing ahead what you can expect! So here's my take! Most of the people who call
themselves online marketing coaches are nothing more than self-proclaimed coaches
who have purchased a system and they now want you to buy it!
2. In the NFL, an individual does not become a coach because one day he woke up and
said to himself, "I think I will become a football coach today." Every successful coach in
the NFL and at the college level worked up to that position by studying under qualified
coaches who trained them. It seems in the MLM industry, people are coming out of the
woodwork calling themselves marketing coaches simply by virtue of a title they gave
themselves and a program they purchased that they are now trying to sell you!
Guess what! I almost drank the Kool-Aid! I got into one of these systems and I thought to
myself, "I am going to do what they do!" So I spent a month trying to brand myself as an
online marketing coach with the hope of convincing people that I had real expertise in
this field! I was also hoping to attract them into my primary business. In the middle of all
this coaching that I was supposed to be receiving, I never received any communication
from the person I purchased the program from after his first initial phone call! As I
continued receiving "training" from the online sources, I was being inundated with more
opportunities to spend more of my hard-earned money! The deeper I got into this
system, I realized the deeper they were trying to get into my wallet. Something didn't sit
well within me! I began asking the question, "Is what I am doing going to build trust with
others or build animosity?"
I came to the conclusion that I could not, in good conscience, promote myself as a
marketing coach only to suck people of their money by getting them into a system that
would ultimately be a bottomless pit of spending! I had to let my conscience be my
guide! I am not here to bash people in this business or bash programs that I am sure are
working quite well for some! But I am here to say that in this wonderful and crazy world
of MLM, there are "Masters of deception" who are promoting themselves as something
they are not! Be careful.
For myself, I have decided to take the honest and transparent approach! I am a coach. I
coach students in the classroom and on the ball field! I lead a ministry whose mission is
to lead students into a growing relationship with Christ and MARKETING COACH them
as ministers in their schools! I coach counselors to be the best counselors they can be at
the camp I direct in the summer! But I am not an online marketing coach! I'm just a guy
who after years of looking over various money-making opportunities realized that the
true path to financial freedom is network marketing. The best I can offer others is in my
mind the best of what network marketing is about which is connections. I can connect
people with other people who can coach them! I can encourage people to live by the
golden rule and do this business the right way! Finally, I can offer my own story of how
network marketing has allowed me to meet some wonderful, high-quality people who
have really helped me develop a vision of myself that I did not have a year ago!
My closing thought! There are no get rich quick schemes. No program can build your
business overnight! The successful network marketers have learned the secret to
success is in your willingness to learn from real mentors and commit to sticking around
even when it gets tough!
