- LPC is the title most used by other states, but some states add the word “clinical” or “mental health.” particularly if there are two tiers of licensure, but not necessarily.
- California was the first state to license LCSWs in the 40s and MFTs in the 60s and the last state to license LPCs in 2009.
- Only those who had focused their degrees on marriage and family therapy could be licensed as MFTs.
- CCCL plans to convert to a membership organization later this year, so LPCCs will be represented and supported. You will be hearing more about this in the coming months.
- Many of us have been working on this license since 2002. CCCL sponsored 3 bills over 5 years in the legislature. (Beginning of 2005 – end of 2009) The third and last bill was very different from the first bill, BUT IT WAS THE BILLTHAT WE COULD GET PASSED.
- We had to make many concessions and compromises to finally get a bill passed, which meant increased standards, restrictions on scope of practice and other compromises. WE DID WHAT WE HAD TO DO TO GET A BILL PASSED.
- “ Counselor” is a widely used term. Adding “clinical” seemed to clarify that LPCCs would be licensed to pratice psychotherapy and the requirements in the bill support this title.
- The only license that the state would consider was a license to practice psychotherapy. We learned that those who do not practice psychotherapy, or mental health counseling, do not need to be licensed, but the opportunity is now there, if they choose to “jump through the extra hoops,” required for licensure.
- The LPCC license does nothing to change the MFT and LCSW licenses. We were asked to grandparent MFTs and LCSWs by the CA Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the CA Society for Clinical Social Work, as an opportunity for their members, if they wanted it.
- The BBS expects to have applications available by October 1, 2010, but its ability to answer questions before January 1, 2011 is contingent on its ability to hire staff.
- The requirements apply to everyone who will come in under grandparenting, even the MFTs and LCSWs. If the degree contains 7 of the 9 core content areas, it will be considered a counseling degree, despite the degree title. All 9 areas must be completed prior to licensure.
- Applicants need to document at least 3 semester units or 4 ½ quarter units in each of these areas. More than one course may be applied to an area. These must be college credit courses, but credit/no credit or pass/fail credit is acceptable.
- Some universities are offering courses online or in person to non-matriculated students, who preparing for grandparenting. Scroll down to Graduate Courses under Providers of Coursework on the CCCL website <caccl.org>. If the BBS denies a course, applicants still have 12 months to take another course.
- MFTs and LCSWs do not have to document these courses to be grandparented, since these courses have been required for their licensure renewal over the past few years. California law and ethics is a good review for the law and ethics exam that is required.
- Supervision is always required for licensure. MFTs and LCSWs have already fulfilled this requirement.
- Wait until you have applied to the BBS, to have scores forwarded, so the BBS will have a folder for you.
- Counselors licensed in other states can decide which route is best for them.
- The timeline for the grandparenting option for May-June graduates is very tight and has several moving parts that would have to work just right: the 2 years experience, supervised hours, additional coursework, and 3 examinations. New graduates may decide that it is better to wait and register as an intern in Jan 2011.
- The fees for LPCCs are expected to come down, once the LPCC program becomes self-sustaining.
