About you:Who is Online at all somehowOn facebook? On twitter? On tumblr?Regularly watching YouTube videos?Who hasA mobile phone?A smartphone?A tablet computer?
I have a few things prepared, but is there anything in particular that you'd like to talk about?
The bible doesn’t mention social media
BUT the bible can help us think about social media
Social media is just a new way to communicate (like letter writing or phoning or emailing), and the Bible has lots to say about how we should communicate.
1 Cor 15:3333 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” The Holy Bible: Holman Christian Standard Version., 1 Co 15:33 (Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers, 2009).----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Are you influencing the people around you for good, or are you being influenced by the people around you to make decisions that you're not entirely happy about?
8 Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things. 9 Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. The Holy Bible: Holman Christian Standard Version., Philippians 4:8–9 (Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers, 2009).
Who has your permission to fill your brain?
Obeying your parentsEph 6:1-36:1 Children, obey your parents as you would the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honour your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. The Holy Bible: Holman Christian Standard Version., Eph 6:1-3 (Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers, 2009).
Parent: No social media for you. This isn’t always going to be easy.----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Has anyone had their parents say they can't go on social media? How did you deal with that situation?
Everyone is online except me.Does anyone ever feel like this? What can we do about it?
Rom 12:2-312:2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. 12:3 For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.
One of the problems with social media is the disconnect between the emotion that your avatar might be displaying, and the emotion you're feeling when you post.
What’s good about social media?
Insights about your friends’ livesReminders to prayKnowing what to pray for
Sharing the gospel with others: this is different to just copy-pasting christian-sounding status updates.Opportunities to show Jesus’ love to other peopleMessages can go a long way.
If you're spending a lot of hours on something, it's going to have an effect on you. Here are a few of the effects of social media.
How’s everyone going with their homework?Have you ever struggled to concentrate on writing out a whole sentence?
Misrepresenting yourself online to get likes
When you’re communicating via text, you can be misunderstood.Anecdote:Waiting for lift.My wife was picking me up from work (I work on the 26th floor) and I texted her to say I was waiting for lift. She thought that I meant I was waiting on the street for the car, and was being passive-aggressive.
Social media makes it harder to think deeplyIf you’re just waiting for the next cat joke, you’ll have trouble thinking through complicated ideas, or even sitting through long talks at summer camp!----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Maybe even a session on social media will be too much to sit through?
Let's try this activity.Try to explain what Jesus has done for you 140 characters.egFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16 - 131 characters

What do you think might be the dangers of using social media (for a Christian)?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/Dovelution.jpghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46UIf you surround yourself with unrealistic images, it will change your perception of what’s normal for yourself.
----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Has anyone made more than one attempt at a profile picture before uploading it?
----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----No matter how good you might look in your profile picture, it's not going to be enough. And you can still expect a lot of negative comments from people.

On Facebook, of course. We log on to Facebook, look through the photographs and status messages our friends post, and believe that everyone is happier and more successful than we are. And when I have spoken to friends and family members who have considered giving up Facebook, this is exactly the reasoning they have given. They look at other people and feel miserable in comparison.
----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----When we compare ourselves to the constant deluge of updates of the best pieces of peoples' lives, we're inevitably going to feel like our lives don't match up.

Average attention span is much lower when you’re constantly looking for a new information fix.----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----One of the challenges with reading the bible on my phone is the interruptions.
----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Facebook itself had a warning notice on its facebook page: facebook is like cake - too much is not good for you.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151541120806729
Using social media sites means that you spend all your time thinking about life from your own point of view. How can I frame this photo to make me look as good as possible? How can I word this status update so that people will be jealous of the life I have? How can I get people to validate me by clicking “like”?--An article published earlier this year [2010] in European Psychiatry presented the case of a woman who lost her job to a Facebook addiction, and the authors suggested that it could become an actual diagnosable ailment. (The woman in question couldn't even make it through an examination without checking Facebook on her phone.) Facebook is supposed to build empathy, but since 2000, Americans have scored higher and higher on psychological tests designed to detect narcissism, and psychologists have suggested a link to social networking. According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 81% of its members have seen a rise in the number of divorce cases involving social networking; 66% cite Facebook as the primary source for online divorce evidence. Openness and connectedness are all well and good, but someone should give two cheers at least for being closed and disconnected too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kony_2012Kony still hasn’t been found.----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Is it really enough just to click "like" on some bad news? No.But we feel like we've done something.
----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----It's hard to make predictions about social media, but I think these ones are pretty safe.
Facebook is more about photos than wordsInstagram, Flickr, (mostly) Tumblr are about image sharing, not text----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Expect to see more heavily manipulated photos.More photos with text over themmore memes.
More MobileMore people have smartphones and are connecting to social media sites from everywhereYou’ll need to work harder to connect to people offlineMobile means people reflect even less before they post.----- Meeting Notes (29/12/2012 16:03) -----Have you ever tried to spend time with someone and they spent the whole time on their phones?
If you're not paying for a service, you're not the customer, you're the product being soldThese sites exist to make money for their shareholders – this usually means selling access to your attention, and as much information as they can find out about you.
Can someone tell you’re a Christian from your social media profile? Can someone tell you’re you from your social media profile? Are you influencing, or being influenced?Loving your friends and your enemiesObeying your parentsObeying the rules of the SM siteThink about taking regular breaks from SM.
