Knox County Health Department 2011
In 2008,University of Tennessee Public Health Nutrition graduate students conducted a food equity
assessment in Knox County. Students used standardized methods to gather food price information in
each of the twelve Knoxville-Knox County MPC planning sectors.
Lower income sectors
had higher average food
prices.
The price of the
standard “market
basket” in Central City,
which had the lowest
mean family income,
was $20 higher than the
price in the highest
income sector,
Southwest County.
The sector with the second highest
mean family income, West City, had
the lowest average food prices and
fruits and vegetables were a lower
percentage of the total food cost.
In contrast, lower income sectors East
City, South City and Central City had
higher food costs with a higher
percent cost for fruits and vegetables.
