2. Anatomy Of A Component Speaker
A good speaker is the one which produces cleaner, richer and smoother sound
Following is the cross-sectional view of a component speaker Alpine SPS 610C
showing various parts
4. Speaker Frame:
An outermost enclosure which supports other parts and components.
A good frame should :
(a) Be resonance free
(b) Have good internal damping
A good frame is:
(a) Distortion free design (good design = good quality sound)
(b) Stable and rigid
Commonly used materials:
Polymers, honey-comb laminate, polypropylene, etc
5. Woofer Cone:
A strong cone structure provides clarity and fast energy transfer.
Commonly used materials:
Synthetic fiber, polyolefine, polypropylene, polybenzoxozole, mica, thermalum, etc.
What to Look For:
• Poly-cones provide exceptional sound and are good temperature resistant
• Paper-cones are efficient and moisture resistant
6. Woofer Surrounds:
This structure in a speaker helps in handling high frequency and the optimized
shape helps provide deep bass.
Commonly used materials:
Butyl rubber, Urethane, Polyester foam.
What to Look For:
• Rubber surrounds provide the best overall performance and longevity.
• Cloth and Foam surrounds are less expensive yet still perform well.
Motor:
It is a strong magnetic material made up of strontium, etc. Good shape and size of the
motor reduces magnetic leakage.
Surrounds
JBL CS-4 JBL CS-5
7. Voice Coil:
The voice coil is a small coil of wire that creates a magnetic field and converts electrical
signals into mechanical energy to produce sound. Good Speakers offer a heat-resistant
voice coil to prolong speaker life.
Commonly used materials:
Glass-imide, kapton polymer, aramid, etc.
What to Look For:
• Larger the diameter of the coil higher the peak power output
• Large diameter of the voice call (30mm diameter) provides around 250 W peak power
8. Anatomy of A Tweeter
1. Silk Dome
Soft silk dome diaphragm with rigid aluminum provides high resolution and wide-band
response.
2. Clearer Highs
Copper cap on pole piece reduces intermodulation distortion for clearer highs and vocal
definition.
3. High Efficiency
Optimized magnet circuit drives CCA wire and soft silk diaphragm with high efficiency.
4. Better Imaging
Swivel design for optimized response and imaging.
9. Tweeter: It is a component of a speaker system which produces high frequency outputs
Super tweeter: A type of tweeter which helps to produce ultra high frequencies
Whizzer: A separate tweeter cone driven by voice coil of the woofer
Tweeter Design:
Cone Dome Semi-dome Balanced dome
Cone Simple, efficient, Reasonably Priced
Dome Accurate and smooth sound
Semi-dome A hybrid, dome inside a cone
Balanced dome A semi-dome with equal reproduction of sound from both cone and
dome
10. Tweeter Materials:
Commonly used: Composite materials:
Silk Aluminum
Cloth Titanium
Paper Mylar
What to look for:
•Kaladex: natural sounds
•Mylar: Inexpensive, resistant to humidity
•Titanium, polycarbonate: bright sounding
•Silk, cloth: smoother sounds
