Mania is a mood that causes excessive energy and irritation . Manic people are very active and need little sleep. There thoughts may race and become disorganized. They may talk fast and may be difficult to interrupt. The two extremes of BMD are usually separated by periods of normal moods . Periods of depression or mania can last from weeks to months. 15. Mental Illness People who have BMD may also experience and believe things that are not real. A hallucination is sensing something that is not real. E.g. A person may hear voices when no one is talking. Some symptoms of BMD occur in several mental illnesses . This can make BMD hard to recognize and treat. Once diagnosed, BMD can be treated. Bipolar Mood Disorder cont. A delusion is a false belief. Manic people may have delusions that they are famous. Or, they may think that they have a special relationship they have never met.

NB it is very important that we don’t “label” someone and it’s best to keep cases private should you know someone that suffers from a mental illness. This is just a brief overview on mental illness to create awareness; and does not give one a license to now make judgments of others. Medical student’s disease” and “cyberchondria” are forms of nosophobia. These conditions develop when the sufferer researches a disease and then starts to believe that he or she has the symptoms of that disease.
UPS AND DOWNS it is not healthy to swing between mania and depression, as it occurs in BMD, it is healthy to feel a range of emotions through life. Ask students if they would like to experience just one mood through their lives. Even happiness would be unhealthy. Normal mood swings do not reach the extremes of depression or mania. ADVANCE ACTIVITY: Some people who suffer from mental illness do no want to take medicine to treat the disorder because there are strong side effects to these medicines. Ask students to research the side effects of medicines used to treat mental illness and weigh the costs and the benefits of using those medicines.
