Information and communication as sources of understanding and transforming the social environment
1. 3. THE INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION AS SOURCES
OF UNDERSTANDING AND
TRANSFORMING THE SOCIAL
ENVIRONMENT: GLOBALIZATION
AND VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES.
EXAMPLES.
2. • ICT’s are changing the social
environment. Some years ago, ICT was
for big business, major universities, and
governments and few people thought that
ICT would be available to just about
everyone.
• Then home computers, laptops...arrived.
This rapid increase in the use of
computers is having an enormous impact
on our lives. Our modern way of living
couldn’t exist if this modern technology
were removed.
3. FOR EXAMPLE
• Our financial system
is dependant on
modern’s technology
to process the
millions of cheques
wiitten every day.
4. CHANGES ON COMMUNICATION
• Modern communication has become almost
instantaneous. Email is cheaper and faster
than writting letters.
• More and more people are now working from
home and this is likely to increase as video-
conferencing becomes more and more
commonplace. In communication technology,
there have been huge advances in digital
communication through satellite and cable
television and digital radio.
5.
6. • ICT has changed a lot of things over the
years such as shopping, banking,
education, medical and manufacturing.
Communities can do a lot more things
now with the use of ICT.
7. POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS
• Positive effects:
*On individuals:
-Access to information, new tools (so, new
opportunities).
*On communities:
-A better communication, information
management and security.
*On society:
-Increasing opportunities for education,
improving communication and allowing
people to participate in a wider society.
8. • Negative effects:
*On individuals:
-Job loss reduced personal interaction and physical
activity.
*On organizations:
-The cost of using ICT may cause a number of
problems for them, security (data must be kept
secure) and competition for some organizations.
*On society:
-Causing a digital device (which means a difference
between rich and poor people), reducing levels of
education and understanding (everyone can publish
something on the Internet, so some information has
mistakes) and causing moral and ethical problems.
