Dr. Stephen Carolan, an obstetrician/gynecologist with the Westchester Medical Group in Rye Brook, New York, has over 20 years of experience in his field. Like most American physicians, Dr. Stephen Carolan recommends that women who are pregnant, nursing, or who may become pregnant take vitamin supplements, and folic acid supplements in particular. Evidence suggests that these supplements prevent children from developing a variety of defects, including spina bifida.

3. New Research Adds to Data on Benefits
of Folic Acid
New research from Norway and published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association suggests there may be
additional benefits to prenatal folic acid supplements. Scientists
analyzed data on 85,176 Norwegian children. They found that
children of mothers who took folic acid supplements around the
time of conception were less likely to receive an autism
diagnosis later. Another recent study found that folic acid
supplementation has no effects on cancer rates. Women who
are planning a pregnancy or who have recently discovered that
they are pregnant should consult an OB/GYN for advice on
vitamin supplements.
