38 Who Saw Hollander Analysis
Are there any acceptable reasons for letting someone die in front of your eyes? In the article "The
Murder They Heard" written by Stanley Milgram and Paul Hollander and first appearing in The
Nation, Milgram and Hollander explored the reasons for the neighbors' failure to help, their lack of
civic sense and their actions toward Catherine Genovese's murder, in part, they are responding to the
hype created around Martin Gansberg's "38 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police." Milgram and
Hollander argued that the witnesses were not at fault in that murder and instead, they blamed the
city life, society norms, law, and the situational pressure. Even though Milgram and Hollander stated
some acceptable reasons to think that the witnesses were not guilty, I still find the witnesses'
responsible for the loss of Genovese's life. According to Milgram and ... Show more content on

They gave reasons showing that the 38 witnesses were not responsible for Genovese's death and it
was okay for them to not call the police for help. They presented some of the reasons like the city
life, society norms, law, and the situational pressure. They also explained them in favor of the
witnesses. First of all, they talked about the personal relationships that are inferior in the city. People
in the city keep distance between themselves because they want to be free (902). This was
considered a big reason for the witnesses to not call the police or help her as they didn't know
Genovese or wasn't close to her. Moreover, Milgram and Hollander presented society rules as an
another explanation for the witnesses to not help Genovese. The witnesses were following the
society rules by not taking the law into their own hands (904). They

Symbolism In The Mending Wall By Robert Frost
What Is The "Mending Wall"? Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" is a poem that was written
without proper form and has no stanzas/rhyme to it; this was done purposely by the author to make
the writing sound more conversational and look more like a common story that a reader can simply
apply to his/her own life circumstances. The poem presents readers with two neighbors and their
efforts at reconstructing a stone wall separating their property every year. Frost uses metaphoric
symbolism in this poem as the wall is used as a metaphor to portray the idea of a barrier between
people and the repairing of the wall as resolving obstacles and bringing people together. Every
spring, two very different men come together to rebuild a wall destroyed by nature and hunters;
however, the speaker begins to think, what is the purpose of this wall if we have no animals to keep
away? Why do we rebuild a wall every year that not even nature wants? The poem begins to
compare two lifestyles: traditional and logical. While the neighbor truly believes "good fences make
good neighbors", the speaker argues that respect and kindness do rather than a useless wall. The first
part of this poem announces the presence of wall destroyers. Lines 1–4 of the poem immediately
introduce readers to "something there is that doesn't love a wall". Frost announces that every year
something is destroying the wall he and his neighbor build. Readers are made to understand that
even nature itself does not like

Edward Scissorhands: Commentary on the Social Faults on...
People who live in the suburbs often feel isolated and trapped in their homes and find ways to
preoccupy themselves to pass the time. The movie Edward Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton
shows several examples of how people live in the suburbs whether they feel isolated, stressed, or try
to find ways to spice up their lives. Many view socializing difficult, but it is important to realize
people brought together by social gatherings can be relaxing and enjoyable. Edward Scissorhands
can be interpreted as commentary on the social faults of the American suburban environment. The
suburbs in America can be more united instead of an environment where people hide in their homes.
Most housewives that live in the suburbs find themselves bored, ... Show more content on

People who live in the suburbs should try to socialize more with the neighbors in order to avoid
loneliness. It is rare for neighbors to become friends right away in the suburbs of America. For
example, in the film most people in the neighborhood tried to avoid the lady who was known as
being extremely religious. She was not well liked because this lady often tried to lecture many
people of the town telling them they would go to Hell. This shows how neighbors in the suburbs
might have big differences and will not get along with each other. Oldenburg states, "The small
town taught us that people's best friends and favorite companions rarely lived right next door to one
another" (98). This shows that people who live in the suburbs might not get along in harmony
because the differences outweigh the common interests. When judgement it made amongst people, it
is usually hard to get along if you cannot get past what you already think of the person. Thus making
friends in the suburbs can be a hard task. We must try to be understanding of differences we have
when meeting new people. In order to have good relationships with the neighbors, it is important to
have good hosting skills. In the film, Peggy finds all her neighbors at her doorstep asking to see
Edward, she simply responds by saying that she is busy. The neighbors quickly resolves this by
inviting themselves to a barbecue to meet Peggy's new guest Edward. Once this day arrives, Peggy

The Importance Of A Shatter Zone In The Film Winter's Bone
A shatter zone used to be defined as "a belt of randomly fissured or cracked rock that may be filled
with mineral deposits"(Moon,pg 1). After World War two the meaning changed dramatically.
According to Moon and Talley, a shatter zone is now is borderlands where "refugee populations
migrated in large numbers to escape the pressures of the state and/or the capitalist economies
through which the state exerted itself"(Moon, Pg 1). For the Most part, James Scott agrees with
Moon and Talley when he defines a shatter zone as " places of resistance to and refuge from some of
the most destructive effects of state–making and state–rule"(Scott,pg 22). This zones are found
wherever a large number of people have gone to seek refuge in out–of–the–way places ( Scott,pg
23). A shatter Zone is depicted throughout the Film "Winter's Bone".
The film, Winter's Bone, open with a shot of Ree Dolly's house. It shows that they are not very well
off, and that the mom is sick and will alway be sick. Ree has assumed her mom's role in taking care
of her young siblings. The film then shows the neighbors skinning a deer to eat. The Dolly family is
watching and hoping that they will bring them some of the meat. The neighbors do bring them meat,
showing a leveling mechanism because a leveling mechanism is to ensure social equality. This
shows that the people living here are self sufficient and do not rely on grocery stores. A sheriff then
rolls up asking for the mom, but ended up just talking to Ree.

A Short Story : The Story Of Abela's Story
She was thirty–eight years old with three children, her name was Aliza. She had two daughters and
one son. The oldest daughter was twelve, and her name was Abela, after her father Abel. Givon was
eight years old during this time. The youngest child was five, and her name was Rillia. They lived in
a tiny neighborhood in Hannover, Germany. They were very close to all of their neighbors except
for the Holzmann family. The Holzmann family lived at the very end of the street. Camila, Aliza's
closest friend from the neighborhood, lived across the street from the most hated people in their
neighborhood. No one liked them because they were Nazi supporters. Aliza's husband was severely
hurt in a car accident when someone hit him with their car while he was riding his bike home from
work. He was left paralytic from the waist down in January of 1940. Aliza had to take care of him
and their three children until they hired a babysitter because Abela and Givon had stopped going to
school. When she found a babysitter, she never left the house for more than thirty minutes except
when she went to work. On March of 1940, people in Aliza's neighborhood had started saying that
Mr. Holzmann was visited by a SS officer and that they didn't have any good plans. Camila had
walked to Aliza's house about 30 minutes after seeing the officer walk in the house. She knocked on
the door impatiently, but she didn't notice she hadn't stopped knocking on the door since she got

My First Night Living At A New Neighborhood
Gun shots in the distance, dogs barking from of police sirens, the sound of footsteps asphalt. Hiding
under my sleeping bag breathing hard I think to myself, "how the heck did we move from a safe
neighborhood to this shit town?" Rolling myself over on my hands and knees off my makeshift bed I
carefully listen to my surroundings –– nothing. A sigh of relief comes out of me as I force my eyes
to adjust to the darkness in my room focusing on my bedroom window trying to remember if I
locked it. My first night living in a new neighborhood was going fantastic! I have never been so
scared in my life. My family and I had lived in trailer homes before, but not one with this type of
neighborhood. I remember my grandmother would warn me about the house being broken into
several times before which gave me caution before she accepted us into her house. The neighbors
across the street were probably the worst people you ever meet. They seemed violent, like those
types of people that you would not dare to make eye contact with. My mother, father, and
grandmother would never get along with them blaming each other for a missing tool in our yard or
once there was a missing trashcan. Looking outside my parents' new bedroom window my mother
noticed the traffic out new neighbors had and she began to spit venom at their name under her
breath. Ignoring her I stuck my head out the window even more gripping to the window sill which
made my knuckles turn white taking in my new neighborhood. A mobile

A Man Called Ove Essay Theme
In the novel, A Man Called Ove written by Fredrik Backman, Ove, an old man, is living in Sweden.
He lives on a private road in old town homes. His neighbors were old friends, but now they are
moving to retirement homes and new more modern people are moving in. Patrick and Parvaneh are
one of the new couples that moved in. They have little children and Ove will become very close to
them because of traumatic events. 'White Men" are the authority in the book. They try and come into
the neighborhood and take everything away from Ove and his neighbors. Ove lives in a
neighborhood with very strict rules that he likes to keep to. For example, motor vehicles are
prohibited, so when the new neighbors bring their car in Ove isn't to happy with them. ... Show more

To start off, a part I did not like about the book was the part about Ove's dad. I felt as though this
complicated the plot a lot and was not necessary to the base of the book. It did not need to be added
into the book because it had no effect to my understanding of what was happening in the book. If
anything it made me more confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present
and it was confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book was when
Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out of his daily routine. Ove
needed someone to shake up the life he had been living for many years. I would not recommend this
book to adolescents because the book was confusing at some points and the humor was guided
towards the adults. Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book
was still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To continue, this
book would be better read by adults because the humor was more guided to that age group. Also,
this book is still relevant today because people do not live forever. We have to learn to move on
from the bad times just like Ove did. When a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the
people around us to begin to feel better about what happened to us. In conclusion, this was a good
book and I would rate it three out of five

Analysis Of The Film ' My Neighbor Totoro '
How Miyazaki persuades his audience to accept his idea on a new relationship between humanity
and nature has not been fully explored and appreciated. The social impact and the religious elements
of 'My Neighbor Totoro ' made it one of the most important films establishing Hayao Miyazaki's
name and reputation in the film industry, both in Japan and worldwide. What makes this film
famous and powerful is not only the magical, mysterious world or the adorable character that
Miyazaki creates, but also the film's persuasive way of delivering an unusual message on the three–
layered relationship between humans and nature. How Miyazaki makes his audience feel connected
with the characters starts with a comparison between Miyazaki's early childhood and the story of the
film. Miyazaki uses his childhood memories and his careful observation of others to create a
realistic and believable world. Then, with a selected scene of the girls meeting Susuwatari, a black
creature in the old empty house, I want to illustrate that Miyazaki's use of a familiar fear from many
people's childhood introduces the audience to a magical and unknown world, but also makes the
audience feel the world is familiar and acceptable. The sacredness of nature is presented through a
comparison between Japanese religions and ritual practices and the symbols in the film. This section
focuses first on the analysis of selected scenes that depict the sacred qualities of nature: Susuwatari's
flight to the moon after the

Five Key Individuals Who Assisted Essay
"The Intervention"
Five key individuals who assisted in the intervention:
1. Mary the superior of Jan.
Mary appeared to be on board with the intervention. Jan called Mary as her husband requested, for
the day off, by Jan's spouse. Mary provided Jan the day off and continued to be very secretive about
the intervention.
The preparation intervention Mary was asked to speak first, at the real intervention. Jan sat next to
Mary on arrivals. Mary held Jan's hand and a very calm, soft soothing way. Spoke of the specific
events that made Mary worried, falling asleep at her desk, the birthday, and a day in July. Jan
listened and did not leave the room.
2. Jeff the son–in–law
Jeff Clarified to Jan how Kim felt at home. He gave specifics Kim was angry and has a huge amount
of sorrow about the alcohol, and Kim has many tears fall. Jeff also, went on to rational thoughts
about bringing the baby over to the house. He explained in a very compassionate manner that Kim
and I both did not want it to be the same as the birthday. Jan looked surprised at what Jeff had
believed. The thoughts that he spoke about Kim, appeared to impact Jan. Jan stayed and continued
to listen.
3. Sue and Jim, the neighbors
Sue held it together when Jan confronted her drinking. Sue agreed she may have a problem too,
however Sue brings it back to Jan in a very tranquil manner. The husband Jim did not speak, but was
supportive and perhaps thought of his own drinking.

Neighbors Movie Psychology
The movie Neighbors clearly demonstrates psychological motives when Pete, played by Dave
Franco, states that he is a psychology minor. At the one hour and five minutes mark of the movie, he
proceeds to explain Teddy's, played by Zac Efron, motives for why he becomes obsessed with hating
their new neighbors (IMDb.com, n.d.). He explains Teddy doesn't like the family next door because
they remind him of his future and he is having too much fun, not planning for it. As the conversation
continues, Teddy identifies other reactions he had been having to problems the two best friends have
been having (Stoller, "Neighbors"). Earlier in the movie, Pete slept with Teddy's girlfriend, but as a

The Ring Of The Phone Momentarily Halted The Ever Present...
The ring of the phone momentarily halted the ever present tears. "Hello," I said softly, "Oh, hi." It
had been at least a year since I had last spoken with my father and I didn't quite know what to say.
Trying to keep the crack out of my voice I told him of the impending divorce. "I love you," he said.
"I never knew," I replied. I could hear the tears falling compassionately on the other end of the
phone. "I'm sorry," I said. "I didn't mean to hurt you. I just never knew you loved me." Tears
prevented either of us from speaking. Then we shared a little more and hung up. A particular sadness
circled but I didn't want to reflect on it at the time. Throughout his life, in his own way, my dad did
love me. Gone during the week, and home only on weekends, didn't allow us to spend time alone
with each other. Maybe I just don't remember. Isn't a father just supposed to love his children? A
lover of animals, my dad could not stand to hear the painful wails of the dog next door tied to a tree
so he went over and brought her home. The neighbors went on vacation leaving their teenage son to
care for the dog which he did not. We named her Spooky and I guess the neighbors didn't care as
they never said a word. Spooky and my dad were buddies and if we went out for an ice cream cone,
Spooky went too, and was treated to her own cone. Another evening, my parents were in the park

Fences In The Barrio Summary
1. The Barrio is where low income Mexican families live and develop social relations with others
around them. It is a safe haven for many Mexican families even though it is very run down and lacks
certain necessities. The streets of the barrio are poorly paved and it even has a makeshift barbershop
in someone's living room. This, however, does not deter families from becoming close with each
other. While in the barrio, families forget about their hardships and gather together to celebrate what
they do have. Their gatherings usually take place on their front porches or in their brightly colored
gardens. 2. The difference between the fences in the barrio and in the Anglo community are that in
the Anglo community, fences are designed to keep people out where as in the barrio, they are more
or less there for decoration. The Anglo community has "thick, impenetrable walls, built to keep the
neighbors at bay," which gives off the impression that visitors are not welcome. On the other hand,
fences in the barrio are "rusty, wire contraptions or thick green shrubs," which give off more of a
welcoming feeling. In the barrio, neighbors do not feel any "sense of intrusion when you cross
them." Anglo fences do not allow for friendly encounters with neighbors. 3. In Ramirez's view,
economic need creates "interdependence and closeness." In the barrio, when you are poor, which
most of the residence are, you will do anything to help your family out, even if you are a kid.

Analysis Of ' My Neighbor Totoro '
The way Hayao Miyazaki entices his viewers to accept his idea about a new relationship between
nature and humanity was never really talked about or discussed in the past couple of years. The film
'My Neighbor Totoro,' with all the religious elements and the social impact it had established the
director Miyazaki as one of the best animators not just in Japan, but around the world. What really
gives this film power and fame is not just the mysterious and magical world it has or the cute
character that Miyazaki created, but also the film's way of influencing the audience by conveying an
unfamiliar message about this three–layered relationship between nature and humans. Comparing
both Miyazaki's childhood memories and the story depicted helps him connect the audience's
feelings with the characters and making this realistic representation of human emotion in the film
believable and realistic not only to children, but even to adults. What also makes the world more
familiar to the spectators is the director's use of a common fear from many people's early years in
this unknown and magical world. This common fear is clearly illustrated when the girls meet
Susuwatari, a black spirit in the old empty house that stays in dark spaces and prefers to be left
alone, and only children can see it. The introduction of this spirit is a good transition between the
world of magic and reality. It confirms and insists about the existence of the unknown, and
introduces a world of illusion and

Examination of Characters in Katherine Anne Porter's...
Examination of Characters in Katherine Anne Porter's Short Story He
Katherine Anne Porter's moving and stylistically cohesive short story "He" contains much worth
discussing. The story's characters are quite memorable and provide for interesting character studies;
in addition, the plot and themes of the story are also noteworthy.
The most elaborately detailed character is Mrs. Whipple. She is the dominating member of the
Whipple family; despite her belief in "men's work" as opposed to women's, she seems to have a
great deal of say in family decisions. Mrs. Whipple is extremely concerned with status and
appearances –– indeed, overly so. This preoccupation of hers is prominent throughout the story,

It seems as though the Whipples take advantage of their son's retardation. They never speak directly
to Him, and refer to their son only as "He" and "Him"; thus, we never learn His name. They also
take advantage of the fact that He seems indifferent to pain or cold, so they give His blankets to the
other children, and give Him tasks the other children seem to have sense enough not to do. By the
end of the story, we learn that He might not be as dumb as He appears. Nevertheless, we know that
Mrs. Whipple does love her son (as well as her other children). She constantly talks about Him, and
her intense outpouring of emotion at the end of the story supports the fact that she loves Him and
indicates she feels some grief about the situation. She knows that "there was nothing she could do to

Analysis Of The Poem ' Mending Wall '

Composition II

"Mending Wall" a poem by Robert Frost seems to take place in countryside estate. Main theme in
the poem is, whether the wall is necessary to have the good relation between neighbors. Narrator
seems to think the wall is not so necessary as it separates him and his neighbor. However, he does
find talking to his neighbor about the wall. but does provide a sense of privacy which is not bad.
Frost is separating habit and and tradition on one side and logics on another. Frost is drawing
tradition on one side and logic and reason on one side. He says that sometimes it is unnecessary to

Neighbors tend to repair the wall every spring just to find it destroyed next year.
Despite of the fact that narrator is one of those neighbor who likes the wall, it is narrator who first
reminds his neighbor to repair the wall. Moreover, the narrator walks along the point in spring to
heal the damaged wall that has been done by hunters. Narrator is more active than his neighbor
finding evidence in (line 12) "I let my neighbor know beyond the hill". Both the work very hard to
build the wall depicting from "We wear our fingers rough with handling them" [stones]. The poet
gives flawless idea how this 'separating' walls unite two neighbour. The narrator is skeptical of this
tradition, he is unable to understand the need of wall where there is no livestock on the property
only the pine trees and apple trees. Both of them decides to walk along the wall and pick up the
stones from their respective sides. Some stones are in shape of bread loaves and some like round
balls.
In this poem, neighbor repeats the phrase, "Good fences make good neighbor". Narrator tries to
explain his neighbor that there is no need to build the wall and condemn for being old fashioned and
maintaining the tradition so stringently. Neighbor believes that rebuilding the wall, strengthens the
bond between them and helps each person to respect the each other. Narrator sees the job of
rebuilding of a wall as a "game" but the neighbor takes this job more

Personal Narrative: City Home
This could not be happening. I kept on thinking that I was paranoid, that I was just imagining it, but
the longer I searched the more I realized that this was a reality. I was nine years old, and my parents
were away for the weekend, on some trip that I can not remember. In lieu of a babysitter, my
grandmother, grandma Hetzel, had come from her city home to watch my brother and me. That is
what she was supposed to be doing, at least. In the two minutes I had gone on a bike ride around our
small cul de sac, my grandmother had disappeared into ruin air. The morning had started off normal
enough. She is the cool kind of grandma who lets you watch TV all day and say whatever you want.

Changes In My Neighbor Totoro
In the film My Neighbor Totoro, Satsuki and her family are going through a lot of changes to their
lives. One of these changes is that they moved to a new neighborhood be closer to their mother (who
is in the hospital). Everyone in the family deals with this change differently. Satsuki's dad tries to
adjust to being the only parent in the house by spending more time at home with Mei, Satsuki's
sister. Mei deals with the changes by trying to spend all her time with Satsuki and playing with
creatures like the Totoros. Satsuki, on the other hand, cannot decide on one specific way to deal with
the change in her live. This causes issues throughout the film. The Totoros and Granny eventually
help her figure out how to deal with her mother not being in her life by getting her to see the
good/fun side of the situation. Satsuki ends up seeing the Totoros when she needs their help the
most.

Persuasive Essay : Why Volunteerism, Community Impact And...
I love to volunteer because it constantly teaches me something new about people, about cooperation,
about compassion, and about myself. In helping others, I am reminded that we are all in this together
and we need to remember to support each other. Life has so much to offer if we remember look
beyond ourselves. I chose to volunteer with a domestic violence safe house this semester. This
experience has confirmed foe me personally that I have indeed chosen the right major for myself.
Volunteerism, public engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and
making a positive impact in your community and society. While gaining internship and job
experience can lead to community impact and social change, it's important for us to remember that
before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to
fully understand the difficulty and seriousness of the social, environmental, or economic issue we
are passionate about. Not only do we need to understand the 'issue' or 'societal problem' that many
people face and are impacted by every day, but we need to meet and work alongside those whose
daily realities are shaped by injustices, while not creating any divides or barriers in the process.
Everyday people are affected by the issues that organizations fight for or against, and once we
realize how people–centered things like advocacy, outreach and service are, I believe young people
will realize their call to action and their

The Life Of My Life
Living in a house for eight years straight, sometimes you tend to forget about some things. Maybe
it's the odor of your three–year–old puppy who sleeps on your couch day–in and day–out, or your
crumbled up bed sheets that your mom tells you to fix every morning. It could even be the sweet
fragrance of homemade cinnamon rolls that fill your body up to the brim with happiness and joy.
But for me, the shouts and yells were never drowned out. I started to think it was normal that roars
echoed all about a considerable amount of times. Nothing would change, but like the hollers, I will
never forget the day my life shattered into a million pieces. It had been a million degrees that day
and the grass was starting to die off.
My neighborhood was, for the most part, mellow and sociable, with the exception of a few brawls
here and there between kids. We would fight over toys and who got to sit where in the Climbing
Tree. However, I never really paid close enough attention to realize that the adults fought too. Not
with other neighbors, but within my own family. Sometimes when it got bad, my mom urged me to
go play with the neighbors with a pained expression that I was inattentive to. I was too young and
too naive to understand why my mother had looked melancholy whenever she had a chat with my
dad. One day it got so heated that flames erupted in our backyard. No one knew how it started, yet
people were also too busy scavenging through their houses to find any water hose

M2M Communication System for Networked Robots with Low...
Initially the robot has pain w, set according to the quality of the work to be performed, and it has an
empty RRT buffer. It keeps on performing its task with the aim to minimize the pain w. If the task
requires any information to be sent the pain c is incremented. Then the robot starts sensing for the
communication signal from its neighbors. If no signal is received the robot starts scanning for
neighbors. If no neighbor units are around the robot will take one RRT step, through RRT forward
propagation block in Fig. 2, and push the initial location node information into the RRT buffer as
shown in Table 1. By doing so the robot has acquired an increment in the pain c. More c represents
that the urge to communicate is more. The physical displacement of robot and the RRT buffer state
at each step for RRT Forward Block is shown in Fig. 1.
After reaching the new location node the robot again scans its environment for any robot in its
communication range. If no robot is found, it again goes through RRT forward propagation block.
Each time the pain c increases and a new location node is reached to scan other robots. If even after
three steps no robots are detected in scanning. The robot will check for the greater pain among c and
w. If c is still greater than w the robot will wait some finite amount of time and keep on decreasing
c. When c becomes less then w the robot makes the value of c equal to zero, which means the
message to be transferred is lost. The robot then return to

My Neighbor Totoro Essay
Hayao Miyazaki has directed ten Studio Ghibli films, and many more outside the company. Most of
his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral
ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki's ambiguity of age,
specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age,
Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing,
characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of growing
up. I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in My Neighbor
Totoro. Miyazaki's film My Neighbor Totoro "tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki
and Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family's interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar
rural Japan" (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and Mei seems to be around five
years old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first demonstrated when they are running
around their new house. Nothing is explicit about age–Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around
the house, and then shows Mei doing the "same thing, but she does it like a young child" (Miyazaki
10). This seemingly small age difference is the foundation of Miyazaki's themes, motifs, and
juxtapositions. In the film, Satsuki and Mei's mother (Yasuko) has a long–term illness
and is in the hospital. As a result, the

The Mending Wall by Robert Frost Essay
The Mending Wall by Robert Frost
Robert Frost was not just a writer. Frost was, more importantly, an American writer whose works
epitomized the Modernist literary movement, and in turn represented the mood and minds of a
nation. Frost remains emblematic of a specific time in our country. Through the words of the poet,
readers of his day could see a real–time reflection of themselves – visible in
Frost's verses were the hopes and apprehensions that marked the first half of the twentieth– century.
However, in his ability to express this unlikely mixture of cynicism and sentiment,
Frost did more than capture the attention of his contemporaries he captured "the times" for all times.

Yet, under scrutiny these lines of seeming simplicity reveal a wealth of profundity. The "something
there is that doesn't love a wall" destroys the structure with "frozen–ground–swell" could be
construed as Nature defying the works human hands.
However, it probable that which does not "love a wall" is not simple nature, but Human Nature.
The "frozen–ground–swell" is the cold heart that permeates the building of such a wall, and the
eventual warming of the heart "spills the upper boulders in the sun". For Frost, a man living in a
time when the industrial revolution and all the advances of the new century, the twentieth– century,
were making our fenced–in walls archaic structures in an emerging homogeneoous society. In fact,
the gaps in the wall were big enough that "...two could pass abreast." This is an important idea. The
holes in the wall were not for one, but for two. A fence has two sides, two identities, two purposes.
In the gaping holes of the wall, both that which is restricted and that which restricts, are allowed
simultaneous freedom of movement. This is an exemplary idea for a time when many restraints in
America, socially and physically, were being defied. Further in the poem, the speaker tells of the
mending of the wall with, "And on a day we meet to walk the line/And set the wall between us once
again/We keep the wall between us as we go/To

Satsuki's Changes In My Neighbor Totoro
In the film My Neighbor Totoro, Satsuki and her family go through a great deal of changes in their
lives. The recent changes in Satsuki's family's lives cause them a great deal of stress. Everyone in
the family deals with the stressful situation in different ways. Satsuki's dad tries to spend more time
at home instead of always working. Mei, Satsuki's sister, deals with the stress by trying to spend all
of her time with Satsuki. Satsuki tries to cope with the stressful situation by ignoring it. She simply
distracts herself from the entire situation her family is enduring. This causes her multitudes of issues
throughout the film and it eventually causes her more stress. The Totoros come into her life to give
her an alternative, stress–free environment. They also distract and relive her from some of the
stressful feelings she encounters.
One of the changes in Satsuki's life that causes a lot of stress is that her mother is in the hospital
getting a long–term treatment for an unknown sickness. This unfortunate situation forces the family
to make a couple of difficult adjustments to their lives. Satsuki's family decides to move to a new

Compare and Contrast / City Living vs. Country Living Essay
City Living vs. Country Living There are many advantages and disadvantages of choosing to live in
the country or to live in the city. But the advantages of living in the country definitely outweigh the
advantages of living in the city. In the city, public schools are often packed full of students resulting
in larger class sizes and no real teacher student relationship. You would be lucky if your teacher
could put a name to your face. Though, bigger schools in the city offer more courses for the student
to take and also offer more extracurricular activities. Where in the country, public schools often do

An engineer living in the city may make triple the salary doing the same type of work as an engineer

smaller than the house he lives in. Whereas the engineer living in the country probably has a much
smaller mortgage, and pays a fraction of the property taxes. He probably owns at least five acres of
land and cannot see into his neighbor's kitchen while sitting on his couch in the living room. There
are definitely more conveniences living in the city. Grocery stores are within blocks from your
home, a gas station is to be found on every corner, and banks and hospitals are within walking
distance. Living in the country means commuting to get to these places. It also means having to be
prepared and making several stops to get all things accomplished in one day to avoid traveling back
and forth several times in one week. In the city there is trash all along the streets and parks wherever
you go. Who knows how long it will be there before someone decides or is paid to pick it up.
Pollution is not a problem living in the country, unless you consider the smell of farm animal's
pollution. With fewer exhaust emissions and less industry waste polluting the air, living in the
country, you can see the stars at night. Sure

Essay about Frosts Tuft Of Flowers And Men
A Look at the Theme of Separation in the Poetry of Robert Frost
The creation of borders and boundaries has been around since the beginning of civilization. The
division of property and possessions among individuals establishes a sense of self–worth. The
erection of fences and walls keeps property separate. Walls also serve as a means of separating
worlds. Modern society demands the creation, and maintenance of these boundaries. In his poems,
“The Tuft of Flowers,'; and “Mending Wall,'; Robert Frost explores the
role that walls play in our lives. He examines how the lives of men are both separated, and drawn
together by walls.

The Butterfly becomes the speaker’s morning companion, and its’ flight
leads the speaker to the flowers. He serves to help lead the man
to realize that life and beauty unite all things. Frost writes, “ The butterfly and I had lit
upon, Nevertheless a message from the dawn'; (19). By directing the man to the flowers, the
butterfly becomes an important character in this poem.
“Mending Wall'; takes up where the theme of “The Tuft of Flowers'; leaves
off. In “Mending Wall';, two neighbors repair the wall that divides their property. The
speaker realizes that questioning the existing wall is senseless, but he likes to view the task of
repairing the wall playfully. Frost writes, “Oh, just another kind of out–door game';
(28). As if playing a game, the speaker tends to his side of the field, and his neighbor to the
opposing side. Frost writes, “Spring is the mischief in me'; (28). By this, the speaker
knows that the acceptance of the wall is a way of life, and that his questions against the wall will
produce no substantial answers. Wallace writes, “Frost knows as well how radical and
difficult it is to “take in'; another, and yet maintain a sense of one’s own
and the other’s distinctness'; (227). The statement encompasses the entire theme of

Neighborhood Anomalies Some unusual characters live in my neighborhood. They vary from all
types of unusual but all equal the same in their intensity. They have endangered my life, made me
question reality, and tested my temper more times than I like to admit. Unfortunately for me, they
are all direct neighbors, so avoiding or escaping them in near to impossible. My neighbor to my
right, whom I have nicknamed "Rosewell" is an extraterrestrial fanatic and is also in a rock band
that strictly performs in his garage at the specific and consistent time of midnight. Roswell's
obsession with otherworldly life has caused some scares that probably have taken ten years off my
lifespan. Once when my whole family besides the dog, Maggie, and myself were out of town for a
night, I had decided to stay up late and watch some detective show in the living room. During some
point I had notice that there was this weird melody playing in the background, even Maggie had
perked her head up trying to find the source. I muted the television and the melody was still there
but clearer and I recognized it as the X–files, a 1990 show about extraterrestrial possibilities, theme
song. I checked the time assuming it was midnight so it had to be Rosewell playing it, however, it
was two in the morning and Roswell 's band usually stopped at one.. Starting to get goose bumps

Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window Analysis
Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" is a short story about a bored voyeuristic man who idealizes a
woman who is under appreciated by her husband. As the story continues, you'll see how this man
goes from voyeur and knight in shining armor to investigator. When reading the story, you learn that
Hal Jeffries can't get around very well, "I could get from the window to the bed, and from the bed to
the window, and that was all" (Woolrich 67). Since he was used to getting more exercise than he is

he's been up to. He brought a gun with him to meet the blackmail caller, luckily Hal had no intention

Postmodern Religion
Problem Statements:
1) The local church must learn to focus its energy/efforts in the community where is resides. How
can we learn to serve and love our neighbors when we do not even know our literal neighbors next
door? As Nehemiah told the people in Jerusalem who were rebuilding the walls of the city, you must
begin where you are at–where you live.
2) We live in a time of great ecological and environmental crisis in which the local church must
provide a theological and tangible response. Global warming is not only a threat to animals and
land, but to humans as well (all creation). Additionally, this is not only an environmental issue, but
also an issue of social justice (race, poverty, etc.).
3) The local church must proclaim a robust understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Of course, this is impossible. The good news that God is reconciling all creation through Christ
presses upon every aspect of our lives (past, present, future). If we are to be true to the gospel
message, we can no longer simply relegate it to "a way to get to heaven when we die" (or avoid hell)
or simply substitute it for a liberal, progressive agenda. In our postmodern era people are wondering
whether the gospel message is true, and to discern whether it is true, they look to the Christians to
see whether or not the truth of the gospel has any tangible effects on the way we live in and see the
world. Unfortunately, far too often, we have failed to incarnate the gospel message and re–present
the body of Christ to the world. My hope, however, is to offer one tangible way in which we live out
the gospel. Not only are we creating a space to share the good news of God's love for all creation
(and God's redemptive work in the world), but we are actively engaging with God in the work of
new creation by living out our faith. Our message to our neighbors is simple: We believe God loves
you–and not only you, but all creation. And we do too. We want to join with God in celebrating,
cherishing and transforming the world. Green Evangelism is a way of spreading the good news and
telling our neighbors that they are loved and cherished by God and their local church. It's a way of
serving them and telling them that the church cares about the earth too. Even if they are not
interested in saving the earth or "going green," the gift of the LED lightbulbs is a way of helping
them save money ($150/year savings would be a huge help to our low–middle class neighborhood)–
which is a whole lot better than a pen or a mug with "Piney Mountain UMC" on it. Our hope is to
embody our faith to our neighbors and

The Theme of Isolation in Robert Frost's The Mending Wall...
The Theme of Isolation in Robert Frost's The Mending Wall
Robert Frost's "The Mending Wall" is a comment on the nature of our society. In this poem, Frost
examines the way in which we interact with one another and how we function as a whole. For Frost,
the world is often one of isolation. Man has difficulty communicating and relating to one another. As
a result, we have a tendency to shut ourselves off from others. In the absence of effective
communication, we play the foolish game of avoiding any meaningful contact with others in order
to gain privacy.
"The Mending Wall" describes two neighboring farmers who basically live in isolation, at least from
one another. Frost's use of language reinforces the idea of isolation. When ... Show more content on

He has learned that it is easier to shut someone out than to attempt to effectively communicate.
While the narrator seems more willing to reach out to his neighbor, in the end, he does not. He does
wonder why fences supposedly make good neighbors. For him, the question is what is he "walling
in or walling out"? He seems to realize that he is "walling out" other people. As long as the symbolic
wall stands between the neighbors, they will always be separated. Earlier in the poem, Frost uses the
symbolism of a rabbit to seemingly reinforce this point. The hunters must destroy the wall in order
to "have the rabbit out of hiding". The men, in turn must break down the walls between them if they
are to come out of "hiding". The narrator seems to have a desire to point this out to his neighbor.
However, he does not, simply dismissing his idea as "the mischief" that spring has instilled in him.
He realizes that he is unable to communicate with his neighbor in any meaningful fashion and, thus,
remains in isolation from him.
Frost considers the interaction between the two men to be nothing more than a foolish game. He
uses language which makes the process of wall mending seem structured and organized in the
manner of a game. The two men "walk the line" as they "keep the wall between us as we go". Frost
makes the men seem like opponents in this "kind of outdoor game", as they are positioned "one on a
side". Thus as they work together,

My Family Experience
It was a hot and humid afternoon as my family and I stepped out of the airplane and walked towards
the immigration line. A reunion was planned a year in advance for my mother and father's golden
anniversary. Their wish was for the whole family to come together from different parts of the globe
to celebrate for a few weeks. As we stood and waited at the long line to enter our homeland, I
imagined how much it had changed since I last stepped foot back home. We came home in 1992. I
already imagined the food I planned to eat, the places I planned to see, and the people I hadn't seen
for some time. It felt nostalgic. I felt a rush of excitement. Traffic, I must say, was extremely horrid.
Instead of having a twenty–minute commute from the airport to our home, it took two and a half
hours to travel. However, my enthusiam did not subside despite the lengthy road travel. My sisters,
on the other hand, were not so thrilled. I sat by the window of the car ignoring the sounds of my
sibling's whining. I observed the locals go about their lives and watched the jeepneys pass by.
Jeepneys are a mode of transportation that are considered a substitute for regular buses. It is also the
cheapest way to get around Manila. I recalled not having the opportunity to ride these Jeepneys
because we did not have to. Yet, I was fascinated by it. I mentally added, "To ride the jeepney", to
my to–do list given that I was allowed.

that exists within the episode is that words are mankind's greatest weapon. I believe that words may

parents. Shocked Margaret and Andrew hugged Marlene after expressing their sympathy she
continued weeping. Andrew asked, "What happened?"
"All the police would say was a neighbor found her lying by the side of the house. Other than that
we don't know anything," Jerry said, patting Marlene's hand. "Son, if we can do anything let us
know. Also, let us know when you schedule her service. We want to attend.
"Thanks Dad," Jerry said. "I'm sorry, Marlene," Margaret said and hugged her. "Are you sure there
isn't anything we can do?" "Not now, we will let you know. We hope they find the killer soon. You
never know who they will murder next," Jerry said, concerned about his family's safety.
Going across the floor, Andrew looked out the window, and said, "I hope they find him soon and do
the same thing to him. Do they have any leads?"
"I'm not sure." Marlene answered. After visiting a short while, picking up her purse, ready to leave,
Margaret said, "It is getting late. We should go on home,"
"Again, we are sorry to hear about Katherine," Andrew said. After his parents left, turning on the
TV, Jerry sat down to watch the news, and see what he

The Vignette 'There Was An Old Woman'
Do you believe minors need supervision to make sure they don't do anything? Yummy is about a kid
name Robert Sandifer who is 11 years old and had been involved in a gang named the Black
Disciples, and he tried to prove himself by shooting a rival gang member. When doing that, he
missed and shot Shavon Dean and killed her. After that he had been on the run for a long time trying
to get away from the cops. His own gang members had believed that he had drawn too much
attention to their gang the Black Disciples and eventually murdered him. The vignette "There Was
An Old Woman" is about how this woman named Rosa Vargas had lots of kids. Her kids did
whatever they wanted, Angel Vargas believed that he could fly and jumped of the roof and killed
himself. The overall message of Sandra Cisneros and Gregory Neri of these two stories was that
minors need supervision so they will not do things that can lead to horrible things happening.
Supervision is needed to make sure the minors don't do anything bad. In the vignette "There was an
Old Woman" it stated, "But after a while you get tired of worrying about kids who aren't even
yours." Rosa Vargas' kids did whatever they wanted and never listened to the neighbors, eventually
the neighbors gave up on trying to stop them from doing bad things. In Yummy, it reads that "There
were so many kids, Yummy could disappear for days and nobody'd notice." Robert Sandifer
(Yummy) could run away from home and he could go somewhere without someone

My Neighbor Totoro Animism
Another one of Hayao Miyazaki's movies that represent an animistic worldview is My Neighbor
Totoro. One of the main spirits in the movie are dust bunnies. A family consisting of a father and
two daughters move into an old house that is filled with dust bunnies. At first, the children believe
that the dust bunnies are just inanimate objects, but soon realize that they come to life when no one
is watching them. The girls then make it their mission to catch the dust bunnies in the act of moving
and to follow them to see what they do. They act completely nonchalant about discovering that these
little dust bunnies are living throughout their house and are actually thrilled that they now have
something to do. The girls also discover a huge tree in the forest of their backyard. This huge tree
hosts an even greater spirit, a monster called Totoro. Totoro has many secret powers and abilities,
including the ability to fly, to stay hidden from anyone he wants to, and he can do ceremonial dances
that cause seeds to grow.. He is referred to as the keeper of the forest, in charge of all the ... Show

The belief that a rock has a soul, is one postulate that animists firmly believe in. Patrick Zukeran,
perfectly explains God's stance on animism. In Isaiah 43:10, God transforms the animistic views of
Israel into a biblical view. He teaches them that he is the only God and that all the other gods they
believe in and worship aren't real. He also declares that any use of magic, witchcraft, and divination
is unbiblical. Unlike the animistic worldview's belief that spirits are the cause for good or bad
fortune, sickness, suffering, accidents and even natural phenomena, "God shows and explains to the
people in Israel that suffering is not the cause of some illegitimate spirit or god, but is His sovereign
act of bringing people back to Him" (Zukeran,

38 Who Saw Hollander Analysis

  • 1. 38 Who Saw Hollander Analysis Are there any acceptable reasons for letting someone die in front of your eyes? In the article "The Murder They Heard" written by Stanley Milgram and Paul Hollander and first appearing in The Nation, Milgram and Hollander explored the reasons for the neighbors' failure to help, their lack of civic sense and their actions toward Catherine Genovese's murder, in part, they are responding to the hype created around Martin Gansberg's "38 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police." Milgram and Hollander argued that the witnesses were not at fault in that murder and instead, they blamed the city life, society norms, law, and the situational pressure. Even though Milgram and Hollander stated some acceptable reasons to think that the witnesses were not guilty, I still find the witnesses' responsible for the loss of Genovese's life. According to Milgram and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They gave reasons showing that the 38 witnesses were not responsible for Genovese's death and it was okay for them to not call the police for help. They presented some of the reasons like the city life, society norms, law, and the situational pressure. They also explained them in favor of the witnesses. First of all, they talked about the personal relationships that are inferior in the city. People in the city keep distance between themselves because they want to be free (902). This was considered a big reason for the witnesses to not call the police or help her as they didn't know Genovese or wasn't close to her. Moreover, Milgram and Hollander presented society rules as an another explanation for the witnesses to not help Genovese. The witnesses were following the society rules by not taking the law into their own hands (904). They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Symbolism In The Mending Wall By Robert Frost What Is The "Mending Wall"? Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" is a poem that was written without proper form and has no stanzas/rhyme to it; this was done purposely by the author to make the writing sound more conversational and look more like a common story that a reader can simply apply to his/her own life circumstances. The poem presents readers with two neighbors and their efforts at reconstructing a stone wall separating their property every year. Frost uses metaphoric symbolism in this poem as the wall is used as a metaphor to portray the idea of a barrier between people and the repairing of the wall as resolving obstacles and bringing people together. Every spring, two very different men come together to rebuild a wall destroyed by nature and hunters; however, the speaker begins to think, what is the purpose of this wall if we have no animals to keep away? Why do we rebuild a wall every year that not even nature wants? The poem begins to compare two lifestyles: traditional and logical. While the neighbor truly believes "good fences make good neighbors", the speaker argues that respect and kindness do rather than a useless wall. The first part of this poem announces the presence of wall destroyers. Lines 1–4 of the poem immediately introduce readers to "something there is that doesn't love a wall". Frost announces that every year something is destroying the wall he and his neighbor build. Readers are made to understand that even nature itself does not like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Edward Scissorhands: Commentary on the Social Faults on... People who live in the suburbs often feel isolated and trapped in their homes and find ways to preoccupy themselves to pass the time. The movie Edward Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton shows several examples of how people live in the suburbs whether they feel isolated, stressed, or try to find ways to spice up their lives. Many view socializing difficult, but it is important to realize people brought together by social gatherings can be relaxing and enjoyable. Edward Scissorhands can be interpreted as commentary on the social faults of the American suburban environment. The suburbs in America can be more united instead of an environment where people hide in their homes. Most housewives that live in the suburbs find themselves bored, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People who live in the suburbs should try to socialize more with the neighbors in order to avoid loneliness. It is rare for neighbors to become friends right away in the suburbs of America. For example, in the film most people in the neighborhood tried to avoid the lady who was known as being extremely religious. She was not well liked because this lady often tried to lecture many people of the town telling them they would go to Hell. This shows how neighbors in the suburbs might have big differences and will not get along with each other. Oldenburg states, "The small town taught us that people's best friends and favorite companions rarely lived right next door to one another" (98). This shows that people who live in the suburbs might not get along in harmony because the differences outweigh the common interests. When judgement it made amongst people, it is usually hard to get along if you cannot get past what you already think of the person. Thus making friends in the suburbs can be a hard task. We must try to be understanding of differences we have when meeting new people. In order to have good relationships with the neighbors, it is important to have good hosting skills. In the film, Peggy finds all her neighbors at her doorstep asking to see Edward, she simply responds by saying that she is busy. The neighbors quickly resolves this by inviting themselves to a barbecue to meet Peggy's new guest Edward. Once this day arrives, Peggy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Importance Of A Shatter Zone In The Film Winter's Bone A shatter zone used to be defined as "a belt of randomly fissured or cracked rock that may be filled with mineral deposits"(Moon,pg 1). After World War two the meaning changed dramatically. According to Moon and Talley, a shatter zone is now is borderlands where "refugee populations migrated in large numbers to escape the pressures of the state and/or the capitalist economies through which the state exerted itself"(Moon, Pg 1). For the Most part, James Scott agrees with Moon and Talley when he defines a shatter zone as " places of resistance to and refuge from some of the most destructive effects of state–making and state–rule"(Scott,pg 22). This zones are found wherever a large number of people have gone to seek refuge in out–of–the–way places ( Scott,pg 23). A shatter Zone is depicted throughout the Film "Winter's Bone". The film, Winter's Bone, open with a shot of Ree Dolly's house. It shows that they are not very well off, and that the mom is sick and will alway be sick. Ree has assumed her mom's role in taking care of her young siblings. The film then shows the neighbors skinning a deer to eat. The Dolly family is watching and hoping that they will bring them some of the meat. The neighbors do bring them meat, showing a leveling mechanism because a leveling mechanism is to ensure social equality. This shows that the people living here are self sufficient and do not rely on grocery stores. A sheriff then rolls up asking for the mom, but ended up just talking to Ree. ... • 12. A Short Story : The Story Of Abela's Story She was thirty–eight years old with three children, her name was Aliza. She had two daughters and one son. The oldest daughter was twelve, and her name was Abela, after her father Abel. Givon was eight years old during this time. The youngest child was five, and her name was Rillia. They lived in a tiny neighborhood in Hannover, Germany. They were very close to all of their neighbors except for the Holzmann family. The Holzmann family lived at the very end of the street. Camila, Aliza's closest friend from the neighborhood, lived across the street from the most hated people in their neighborhood. No one liked them because they were Nazi supporters. Aliza's husband was severely hurt in a car accident when someone hit him with their car while he was riding his bike home from work. He was left paralytic from the waist down in January of 1940. Aliza had to take care of him and their three children until they hired a babysitter because Abela and Givon had stopped going to school. When she found a babysitter, she never left the house for more than thirty minutes except when she went to work. On March of 1940, people in Aliza's neighborhood had started saying that Mr. Holzmann was visited by a SS officer and that they didn't have any good plans. Camila had walked to Aliza's house about 30 minutes after seeing the officer walk in the house. • 14. My First Night Living At A New Neighborhood Gun shots in the distance, dogs barking from of police sirens, the sound of footsteps asphalt. Hiding under my sleeping bag breathing hard I think to myself, "how the heck did we move from a safe neighborhood to this shit town?" Rolling myself over on my hands and knees off my makeshift bed I carefully listen to my surroundings –– nothing. A sigh of relief comes out of me as I force my eyes to adjust to the darkness in my room focusing on my bedroom window trying to remember if I locked it. My first night living in a new neighborhood was going fantastic! I have never been so scared in my life. My family and I had lived in trailer homes before, but not one with this type of neighborhood. I remember my grandmother would warn me about the house being broken into several times before which gave me caution before she accepted us into her house. The neighbors across the street were probably the worst people you ever meet. They seemed violent, like those types of people that you would not dare to make eye contact with. My mother, father, and grandmother would never get along with them blaming each other for a missing tool in our yard or once there was a missing trashcan. Looking outside my parents' new bedroom window my mother noticed the traffic out new neighbors had and she began to spit venom at their name under her breath. Ignoring her I stuck my head out the window even more gripping to the window sill which made my knuckles turn white taking in my new neighborhood. A mobile ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His neighbors were old friends, but now they are moving to retirement homes and new more modern people are moving in. Patrick and Parvaneh are one of the new couples that moved in. They have little children and Ove will become very close to them because of traumatic events. 'White Men" are the authority in the book. They try and come into the neighborhood and take everything away from Ove and his neighbors. Ove lives in a neighborhood with very strict rules that he likes to keep to. For example, motor vehicles are prohibited, so when the new neighbors bring their car in Ove isn't to happy with them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To start off, a part I did not like about the book was the part about Ove's dad. I felt as though this complicated the plot a lot and was not necessary to the base of the book. It did not need to be added into the book because it had no effect to my understanding of what was happening in the book. If anything it made me more confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present and it was confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book was when Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out of his daily routine. Ove needed someone to shake up the life he had been living for many years. I would not recommend this book to adolescents because the book was confusing at some points and the humor was guided towards the adults. Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book was still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To continue, this book would be better read by adults because the humor was more guided to that age group. Also, this book is still relevant today because people do not live forever. We have to learn to move on from the bad times just like Ove did. When a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the people around us to begin to feel better about what happened to us. In conclusion, this was a good book and I would rate it three out of five ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Film ' My Neighbor Totoro ' How Miyazaki persuades his audience to accept his idea on a new relationship between humanity and nature has not been fully explored and appreciated. The social impact and the religious elements of 'My Neighbor Totoro ' made it one of the most important films establishing Hayao Miyazaki's name and reputation in the film industry, both in Japan and worldwide. What makes this film famous and powerful is not only the magical, mysterious world or the adorable character that Miyazaki creates, but also the film's persuasive way of delivering an unusual message on the three– layered relationship between humans and nature. How Miyazaki makes his audience feel connected with the characters starts with a comparison between Miyazaki's early childhood and the story of the film. Miyazaki uses his childhood memories and his careful observation of others to create a realistic and believable world. Then, with a selected scene of the girls meeting Susuwatari, a black creature in the old empty house, I want to illustrate that Miyazaki's use of a familiar fear from many people's childhood introduces the audience to a magical and unknown world, but also makes the audience feel the world is familiar and acceptable. The sacredness of nature is presented through a comparison between Japanese religions and ritual practices and the symbols in the film. This section focuses first on the analysis of selected scenes that depict the sacred qualities of nature: Susuwatari's flight to the moon after the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jeff also, went on to rational thoughts about bringing the baby over to the house. He explained in a very compassionate manner that Kim and I both did not want it to be the same as the birthday. Jan looked surprised at what Jeff had believed. The thoughts that he spoke about Kim, appeared to impact Jan. Jan stayed and continued to listen. 3. Sue and Jim, the neighbors Sue held it together when Jan confronted her drinking. Sue agreed she may have a problem too, however Sue brings it back to Jan in a very tranquil manner. At the one hour and five minutes mark of the movie, he proceeds to explain Teddy's, played by Zac Efron, motives for why he becomes obsessed with hating their new neighbors (IMDb.com, n.d.). It had been at least a year since I had last spoken with my father and I didn't quite know what to say. Trying to keep the crack out of my voice I told him of the impending divorce. "I love you," he said. "I never knew," I replied. I could hear the tears falling compassionately on the other end of the phone. "I'm sorry," I said. "I didn't mean to hurt you. • 28. Fences In The Barrio Summary 1. The Barrio is where low income Mexican families live and develop social relations with others around them. It is a safe haven for many Mexican families even though it is very run down and lacks certain necessities. The streets of the barrio are poorly paved and it even has a makeshift barbershop in someone's living room. This, however, does not deter families from becoming close with each other. While in the barrio, families forget about their hardships and gather together to celebrate what they do have. Their gatherings usually take place on their front porches or in their brightly colored gardens. 2. The difference between the fences in the barrio and in the Anglo community are that in the Anglo community, fences are designed to keep people out where as in the barrio, they are more or less there for decoration. The Anglo community has "thick, impenetrable walls, built to keep the neighbors at bay," which gives off the impression that visitors are not welcome. On the other hand, fences in the barrio are "rusty, wire contraptions or thick green shrubs," which give off more of a welcoming feeling. In the barrio, neighbors do not feel any "sense of intrusion when you cross them." Anglo fences do not allow for friendly encounters with neighbors. 3. In Ramirez's view, economic need creates "interdependence and closeness." In the barrio, when you are poor, which most of the residence are, you will do anything to help your family out, even if you are a kid. Children in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of ' My Neighbor Totoro ' The way Hayao Miyazaki entices his viewers to accept his idea about a new relationship between nature and humanity was never really talked about or discussed in the past couple of years. The film 'My Neighbor Totoro,' with all the religious elements and the social impact it had established the director Miyazaki as one of the best animators not just in Japan, but around the world. What really gives this film power and fame is not just the mysterious and magical world it has or the cute character that Miyazaki created, but also the film's way of influencing the audience by conveying an unfamiliar message about this three–layered relationship between nature and humans. Comparing both Miyazaki's childhood memories and the story depicted helps him connect the audience's feelings with the characters and making this realistic representation of human emotion in the film believable and realistic not only to children, but even to adults. What also makes the world more familiar to the spectators is the director's use of a common fear from many people's early years in this unknown and magical world. This common fear is clearly illustrated when the girls meet Susuwatari, a black spirit in the old empty house that stays in dark spaces and prefers to be left alone, and only children can see it. The introduction of this spirit is a good transition between the world of magic and reality. It confirms and insists about the existence of the unknown, and introduces a world of illusion and ... Examination of Characters in Katherine Anne Porter's Short Story He Katherine Anne Porter's moving and stylistically cohesive short story "He" contains much worth discussing. The story's characters are quite memorable and provide for interesting character studies; in addition, the plot and themes of the story are also noteworthy. The most elaborately detailed character is Mrs. Whipple. She is the dominating member of the Whipple family; despite her belief in "men's work" as opposed to women's, she seems to have a great deal of say in family decisions. By the end of the story, we learn that He might not be as dumb as He appears. Nevertheless, we know that Mrs. Whipple does love her son (as well as her other children). Not only do we need to understand the 'issue' or 'societal problem' that many people face and are impacted by every day, but we need to meet and work alongside those whose daily realities are shaped by injustices, while not creating any divides or barriers in the process. • 42. The Life Of My Life Living in a house for eight years straight, sometimes you tend to forget about some things. Maybe it's the odor of your three–year–old puppy who sleeps on your couch day–in and day–out, or your crumbled up bed sheets that your mom tells you to fix every morning. It could even be the sweet fragrance of homemade cinnamon rolls that fill your body up to the brim with happiness and joy. But for me, the shouts and yells were never drowned out. I started to think it was normal that roars echoed all about a considerable amount of times. Nothing would change, but like the hollers, I will never forget the day my life shattered into a million pieces. It had been a million degrees that day and the grass was starting to die off. My neighborhood was, for the most part, mellow and sociable, with the exception of a few brawls here and there between kids. We would fight over toys and who got to sit where in the Climbing Tree. However, I never really paid close enough attention to realize that the adults fought too. Not with other neighbors, but within my own family. Sometimes when it got bad, my mom urged me to go play with the neighbors with a pained expression that I was inattentive to. • 46. My Neighbor Totoro Essay Hayao Miyazaki has directed ten Studio Ghibli films, and many more outside the company. Most of his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki's ambiguity of age, specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age, Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing, characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of growing up. I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki's film My Neighbor Totoro "tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family's interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan" (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and Mei seems to be around five years old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first demonstrated when they are running around their new house. Nothing is explicit about age–Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around the house, and then shows Mei doing the "same thing, but she does it like a young child" (Miyazaki 10). This seemingly small age difference is the foundation of Miyazaki's themes, motifs, and juxtapositions. In the film, Satsuki and Mei's mother (Yasuko) has a long–term illness and is in the hospital. Frost was, more importantly, an American writer whose works epitomized the Modernist literary movement, and in turn represented the mood and minds of a nation. Frost remains emblematic of a specific time in our country. Through the words of the poet, readers of his day could see a real–time reflection of themselves – visible in Frost's verses were the hopes and apprehensions that marked the first half of the twentieth– century. The "something there is that doesn't love a wall" destroys the structure with "frozen–ground–swell" could be construed as Nature defying the works human hands. The "frozen–ground–swell" is the cold heart that permeates the building of such a wall, and the eventual warming of the heart "spills the upper boulders in the sun". For Frost, a man living in a time when the industrial revolution and all the advances of the new century, the twentieth– century, were making our fenced–in walls archaic structures in an emerging homogeneoous society. In fact, the gaps in the wall were big enough that "...two could pass abreast." This is an important idea. The holes in the wall were not for one, but for two. A fence has two sides, two identities, two purposes. In the gaping holes of the wall, both that which is restricted and that which restricts, are allowed simultaneous freedom of movement. This is an exemplary idea for a time when many restraints in America, socially and physically, were being defied. Further in the poem, the speaker tells of the mending of the wall with, "And on a day we meet to walk the line/And set the wall between us once again/We keep the wall between us as we go/To ... My neighbor to my right, whom I have nicknamed "Rosewell" is an extraterrestrial fanatic and is also in a rock band that strictly performs in his garage at the specific and consistent time of midnight. Roswell's obsession with otherworldly life has caused some scares that probably have taken ten years off my lifespan. Once when my whole family besides the dog, Maggie, and myself were out of town for a night, I had decided to stay up late and watch some detective show in the living room. During some point I had notice that there was this weird melody playing in the background, even Maggie had perked her head up trying to find the source. I muted the television and the melody was still there but clearer and I recognized it as the X–files, a 1990 show about extraterrestrial possibilities, theme song. I checked the time assuming it was midnight so it had to be Rosewell playing it, however, it was two in the morning and Roswell 's band usually stopped at one.. Starting to get goose bumps that one gets when they hear music that's either really good or just creepy, I looked out the window to see if his garage lights ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window Analysis Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" is a short story about a bored voyeuristic man who idealizes a woman who is under appreciated by her husband. As the story continues, you'll see how this man goes from voyeur and knight in shining armor to investigator. When reading the story, you learn that Hal Jeffries can't get around very well, "I could get from the window to the bed, and from the bed to the window, and that was all" (Woolrich 67). Since he was used to getting more exercise than he is getting now he was restless and needed something to do, watching people seemed to be idealistic since reading books wasn't his thing. Mr. Thorwald is getting more and more suspicious on which neighbor has a clue to what he's been up to. He brought a gun with him to meet the blackmail caller, luckily Hal had no intention on going to meet him, he just wanted him out of the house so he could have his employee slightly move his things around in Thorwald's apartment. In the end, Thorwald figures out who knew what he'd done and tried to kill him, but ended up dead himself. Hal finally figures out what happened to Mrs. Thorwald, her husband had killed her and buried her body in the cement during construction in the apartment above's floor. With the help of Thorwald's mistress, they tried unsuccessfully to cover the murder up. "Like so many other of Hitchcock films it tells the story of a man who trivializes and persecutes the woman who loves him and in doing so builds a strong bond of sympathy between the audience and the suffering heroine." • 60. Postmodern Religion Problem Statements: 1) The local church must learn to focus its energy/efforts in the community where is resides. How can we learn to serve and love our neighbors when we do not even know our literal neighbors next door? As Nehemiah told the people in Jerusalem who were rebuilding the walls of the city, you must begin where you are at–where you live. 2) We live in a time of great ecological and environmental crisis in which the local church must provide a theological and tangible response. Global warming is not only a threat to animals and land, but to humans as well (all creation). Additionally, this is not only an environmental issue, but also an issue of social justice (race, poverty, etc.). 3) The local church must proclaim a robust understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, this is impossible. The good news that God is reconciling all creation through Christ presses upon every aspect of our lives (past, present, future). If we are to be true to the gospel message, we can no longer simply relegate it to "a way to get to heaven when we die" (or avoid hell) or simply substitute it for a liberal, progressive agenda. In our postmodern era people are wondering whether the gospel message is true, and to discern whether it is true, they look to the Christians to see whether or not the truth of the gospel has any tangible effects on the way we live in and see the world. Unfortunately, far too often, we have failed to incarnate the gospel message and re–present the body of Christ to the world. My hope, however, is to offer one tangible way in which we live out the gospel. Not only are we creating a space to share the good news of God's love for all creation (and God's redemptive work in the world), but we are actively engaging with God in the work of new creation by living out our faith. Our message to our neighbors is simple: We believe God loves you–and not only you, but all creation. And we do too. We want to join with God in celebrating, cherishing and transforming the world. Green Evangelism is a way of spreading the good news and telling our neighbors that they are loved and cherished by God and their local church. It's a way of serving them and telling them that the church cares about the earth too. Even if they are not interested in saving the earth or "going green," the gift of the LED lightbulbs is a way of helping them save money ($150/year savings would be a huge help to our low–middle class neighborhood)– which is a whole lot better than a pen or a mug with "Piney Mountain UMC" on it. • 64. The Theme of Isolation in Robert Frost's The Mending Wall... The Theme of Isolation in Robert Frost's The Mending Wall Robert Frost's "The Mending Wall" is a comment on the nature of our society. In this poem, Frost examines the way in which we interact with one another and how we function as a whole. For Frost, the world is often one of isolation. Man has difficulty communicating and relating to one another. As a result, we have a tendency to shut ourselves off from others. In the absence of effective communication, we play the foolish game of avoiding any meaningful contact with others in order to gain privacy. "The Mending Wall" describes two neighboring farmers who basically live in isolation, at least from one another. Frost's use of language reinforces the idea of isolation. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He has learned that it is easier to shut someone out than to attempt to effectively communicate. While the narrator seems more willing to reach out to his neighbor, in the end, he does not. He does wonder why fences supposedly make good neighbors. For him, the question is what is he "walling in or walling out"? He seems to realize that he is "walling out" other people. As long as the symbolic wall stands between the neighbors, they will always be separated. Earlier in the poem, Frost uses the symbolism of a rabbit to seemingly reinforce this point. The hunters must destroy the wall in order to "have the rabbit out of hiding". The men, in turn must break down the walls between them if they are to come out of "hiding". The narrator seems to have a desire to point this out to his neighbor. However, he does not, simply dismissing his idea as "the mischief" that spring has instilled in him. He realizes that he is unable to communicate with his neighbor in any meaningful fashion and, thus, remains in isolation from him. Frost considers the interaction between the two men to be nothing more than a foolish game. He uses language which makes the process of wall mending seem structured and organized in the manner of a game. The two men "walk the line" as they "keep the wall between us as we go". Frost makes the men seem like opponents in this "kind of outdoor game", as they are positioned "one on a side". Thus as they work together, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. My Family Experience It was a hot and humid afternoon as my family and I stepped out of the airplane and walked towards the immigration line. A reunion was planned a year in advance for my mother and father's golden anniversary. Their wish was for the whole family to come together from different parts of the globe to celebrate for a few weeks. As we stood and waited at the long line to enter our homeland, I imagined how much it had changed since I last stepped foot back home. We came home in 1992. I already imagined the food I planned to eat, the places I planned to see, and the people I hadn't seen for some time. It felt nostalgic. I felt a rush of excitement. Traffic, I must say, was extremely horrid. Instead of having a twenty–minute commute from the airport to our home, it took two and a half hours to travel. However, my enthusiam did not subside despite the lengthy road travel. My sisters, on the other hand, were not so thrilled. I sat by the window of the car ignoring the sounds of my sibling's whining. I observed the locals go about their lives and watched the jeepneys pass by. Jeepneys are a mode of transportation that are considered a substitute for regular buses. It is also the cheapest way to get around Manila. I recalled not having the opportunity to ride these Jeepneys because we did not have to. Yet, I was fascinated by it. I mentally added, "To ride the jeepney", to my to–do list given that I was allowed. As we arrived at our destination, the family took turns unloading ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The central theme that exists within the episode is that words are mankind's greatest weapon. I believe that words may not be able to physically hurt someone, but they can emotionally. Emotional pain is sometimes harder to endure than physical pain. In the neighborhood, some of the neighbors like Les Goodman are accused of being a suspect because his car randomly turned on, while everyone else's didn't start. Though he has no effect on the aliens, a woman claims that she has seen him look up at the sky late at night, as though he is waiting for something. She thinks he is waiting for the aliens or something from outer space. Therefore Goodman becomes an immediate suspicion to all the neighbors. Everyone in the neighborhood is now more aware of him, claiming that his family isn't human, but aliens. The woman was being the real monster to society because she had no idea what she was talking about and jumps to conclusion about Les Goodman. Since she made a comment that didn't have supported evidence, she dug Les Goodman into a hole, making people think he is an alien because everyone starts to believe her. Shocked Margaret and Andrew hugged Marlene after expressing their sympathy she continued weeping. Andrew asked, "What happened?" "Son, if we can do anything let us know. Also, let us know when you schedule her service. We want to attend. "Thanks Dad," Jerry said. "I'm sorry, Marlene," Margaret said and hugged her. • 76. The Vignette 'There Was An Old Woman' Do you believe minors need supervision to make sure they don't do anything? Yummy is about a kid name Robert Sandifer who is 11 years old and had been involved in a gang named the Black Disciples, and he tried to prove himself by shooting a rival gang member. When doing that, he missed and shot Shavon Dean and killed her. After that he had been on the run for a long time trying to get away from the cops. His own gang members had believed that he had drawn too much attention to their gang the Black Disciples and eventually murdered him. The vignette "There Was An Old Woman" is about how this woman named Rosa Vargas had lots of kids. Her kids did whatever they wanted, Angel Vargas believed that he could fly and jumped of the roof and killed himself. The overall message of Sandra Cisneros and Gregory Neri of these two stories was that minors need supervision so they will not do things that can lead to horrible things happening. Supervision is needed to make sure the minors don't do anything bad. In the vignette "There was an Old Woman" it stated, "But after a while you get tired of worrying about kids who aren't even yours." Rosa Vargas' kids did whatever they wanted and never listened to the neighbors, eventually the neighbors gave up on trying to stop them from doing bad things.
