“When in doubt, go to the library”
~from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K.
                     Rowling
 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating
    the freedom to read.
 Typically held during the last week of September,
it highlights the value of free and open access to
    information.
 The purpose is to support of the freedom to seek
and to express ideas, even those some consider
    unorthodox or unpopular.
 By focusing on efforts across the country to
remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books
Week draws national attention to the harms of
    censorship.
"Reprinted by permission of the American Library Association."
 A challenge is an  A banning is the
attempt to remove or removal of those
    restrict materials.
    materials, based upon
    the objections of a
    person or group.
 Books usually are challenged with the best
    intentions—to protect others, frequently
children, from difficult ideas and information.
 The following were the top three reasons cited
for challenging materials as reported to the
    Office of Intellectual Freedom:
 the material was considered to be "sexually explicit"
 the material contained "offensive language"
 the material was "unsuited to age group"
 Throughout history, more and different kinds
of people and groups , who, for all sorts of
    reasons, have attempted—and continue to
    attempt—to suppress anything that conflicts
with or anyone who disagrees with their own
    beliefs.
 The ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom
receives reports from libraries, schools, and the
media on attempts to ban books in
    communities across the country.
 Research suggests that for each challenge
reported there are as many as four or five that
    go unreported.
