1. Consumption Data of Yellow Phosphorus in China
Figure 4-1 Consumption pattern of Yellow phosphorus in China, 2009
With Chinese government encouraging deep processing of yellow phosphorus into fine
phosphorus chemicals, more yellow phosphorus will be used to those products with high
added value.
Among the major end use sectors, thermal phosphoric acid output will shrink in the next five
years as China has already suffered overcapacity and rather low operating rate, with its
capacity sharing 70.36% of the global total. Meanwhile, the product faces intense competition
from wet phosphoric acid.
With both overseas and domestic demand of pesticide to maintain fast growth momentum in
the next five years, the demand of phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus pentasulfide, which
are both raw materials for many pesticides, will continue to increase fast.
Demand of sodium hypophosphite will also increase fast thanks to the fast development of
automobile, electronic and engineering industry.
Demand of phosphorus pentoxide, a relatively smaller yellow phosphorus downstream product,
will increase, especially in phosphate esters.
Demand of red phosphorus may keep growing slightly in China mainly driven by flame
retardants, the fastest growing sector that mainly boost red phosphorus demand to grow in
recent years.

2. Figure Forecast on Yellow phosphorus consumption in China in the coming 2 years
(consumption and demand) At the same time, the consumption volume will stay generally
stable in the following years. With the growth of refined wet-process phosphoric acid and
decrease of sodium tripolyphosphate’s output, the demand for yellow phosphorus in China will
drop. However, the glyphosate demand growth will push up phosphorus trichloride’s
consumption, which will increase the demand of yellow phosphorus, to some extent.
