Executive summary:
After about 30 years development, China’s glucono-delta-lactone(GDL) industry has been put into
large-scale production with fast expansion in this period. At present, China has become one of the
major GDL manufacturing countries in the world.
Gradually, the development trend has been stable in recent years, as the growth of demand is not
as fast as the growth of production. Meanwhile, China’s GDL industry has faced with huge
pressure from environmental policy owing to its unclean production progress, and there are no
new large-scale manufacturers engaging in GDL industry in recent years.
- Production
In recent years, due to strict policy on environmental protection and intense competition, some
enterprises have stopped their GDL production, such as Hubei Kesheng Chemical Co., Ltd., Haiso
Technology Co., Ltd.（former Hubei Research Institute of Chemistry）, etc. while some new
producers have emerged.
At present, there are around XX enterprises engaging in China’s GDL industry, and total GDL
production capacity has reached XXt/a, the output is XX tonnes, with CAGR of XX% during
2003-2009. Meanwhile, sales revenue of China’s GDL has reached USDXX million in 2009, with
CAGR of XX% in the period of 2003-2009.
The glucono-delta-lactone production is highly concentrated. Anhui Xingzhou, Jiangsu Zhuoyun
and Shandong Kaison are the top three largest GDL companies in China, with their capacity
accounting for XX% of China’s total, the total sales revenue of GDL for the top three largest
companies accounts for XX% of total in 2009.
- Raw material
Glucose and corn starch are two different kinds of raw materials used in industrialized production
of GDL. Glucose is still the most important raw material for China’s GDL industry, total capacity of
GDL with glucose as raw material accounts for around XX% of total capacity of China’s GDL in
2010. Some GDL producers normally use corn starch as raw material as they boast advantage of
sufficient raw material supply.

- Import and export
In the past few years, the production of China’s GDL increases quickly, which also promotes the
export of GDL increasingly.
China, an important GDL exporter in the world, has witnessed continuous export volume increase
with CAGR of XX% from 2003-2009. In 2009, China’s exported GDL reaches around XX tonnes,
accounting for around XX% of the total domestic output, with India and Japan as the two largest
export destinations.
The import volume of GDL was small without much change, because the domestic supply of GDL
can meet the demand in domestic market.
- Consumption
In the past few years, the consumption growth of GDL in China is slow, and the consumption
volume is relatively stable, with CAGR of XX% in 2005-2009. GDL in China is usually consumed in
such fields like bean product, meat product, beer, raising agent, etc., with bean products as the
largest consumption field, accounting for XX% of the total apparent consumption in 2009.
- Technology
At present, China’s GDL enterprises almost only adopt fermentation method or catalytic oxidation
method in industrialized production of GDL.
Fermentation method has become the most important production technology in recent years in
China mainly thanks to its advantage in low manufacturing cost and sufficient raw material supply.
GDL capacity with fermentation method takes up around XX% market share of total capacity in
China in 2009.
