2. Was born in Neuchatel Switzerland on August 9,
1896.
Passed away on September 16, 1980.
Studied zoology and psychology at the University
of Neuchatel.
Received a Doctorate degree in Psychology in
1918.
1929 started work at the University of Geneva.
He worked their until his death.
1955 established The Centre of Genetic
Epistemology (Theory of Knowledge)
Published more than 50 books and over 500
papers.
Jean Piaget 101
3. Sensorimotor: (0-2 years old)
Preoperational: (2-7 years old)
Concrete Operations (7-11 years old)
Propositional or Formal Operations (11-12
and 14-15 years old)
Theory of Cognitive Development
4. Schema: is the representations of things we
have learned and how we respond to the
world around us.
Equilibration: (equilibrium, disequilibrium)
the process of seeking balance in our
learning process
Assimilation: when we use existing schema
to understand and deal with situations
Accommodation: when current schema does
not work.
Some other terms that are
important
5. Worked with Barbel Inhelder and
published findings in the book The Child’s
Conception of Space in 1948.
This study focuses on a child’s ability to
reproduce linear and circular order.
Linear and Circular Order Study
6. Please answer questions 2-5 on your
assessment you will have 2 minutes to
answer each question.
While answering think about The theory of
Cognitive Development.
Now it is your turn!!
7. Five things that Piaget and
Inhelder wanted to see
• Reproduction of simple
Pictures from linear order
clip art • Changing from circular to
a linear order
• Establishing reverse order
• Direct or reverse order
• Reproducing a figure 8
8. Stage 1: ranges from ages 2-4.
◦ At the beginning of the stage kids place beads
haphazardly.
◦ Kids then succeed to conforming to the general pattern
but only arranging proximity pairs/
Stage 2:ranges from 4-5
◦ Kids unable to complete reverse order and cannot
complete the figure 8. Kids also have trouble with the
word “between”
◦ reverse order is done through trial and error.
Kids can complete the linear and circular orders
but Stage 3 ranges from age 6-7
◦ Kids can complete the linear and circular order and they
can complete reverse order and the figure 8.
The three stages
9. Piaget underestimated children’s ability
Thinking within stages would be similar
across tasks.
According to Piaget teaching children
advanced concepts would be
unsuccessful.
In other words Kids are able to do more
then originally thought.
Some Criticisms
10. When teaching math we teach patterns.
Understanding his study of linear and
circular order will help.
When teaching new material it is
important to make sure that the students
understand. Take in account equilibrium.
