Storia’s enriched eBooks service the primary goal of supporting a child’s literacy development by offering a young reader a deeper level of engagement with eBooks. All enrichment activities were designed and tested with input from teachers and kids, as well as internal and external educational advisors.
3. STORIA PILOT TEST
Tested key benefits with
over 2,000 teachers and 2,000 parents.
Parent Feedback:
Recognized Storia’s
potential to make
reading more fun for kids,
encourage them to
read more and help them
reinforce reading skills
Teacher
Feedback:
Storia’s functionality
could motivate a child
to read more
4. STORIA eBOOKS: CONTENT
• Over 4000 eBooks
available
• Over 900 enriched eBooks
The success of any eReading platform
is only as strong as its library.
92% of kids say they are more likely
to finish a book they chose
5. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE ONE
PRODUCT GOALS & PEDAGOGY
• Design a spectrum of technologies that can enable
interaction and personalization
• Allow kids to engage more deeply with eBooks
• Offer audio support for early and emerging readers, via a
“read to me” feature
• Add value to eBooks by increasing their re-read-ability
• Enrichment Activities do not interfere with the book layout. They
appear over existing pages, the design and text remain intact.
• Parents/teachers control access to enrichments (turn on/off).
Product Goals
6. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE ONE
PRODUCT GOALS & PEDAGOGY
Pedagogy
• Learning objectives were
designed in concert with literacy
experts and educational leaders
• The five key areas of literacy
development (vocabulary,
phonics, phonemic awareness,
fluency, comprehension)
informed the design and
functionality of all activities
• Game engines reinforce specific
book content and themes
• Enrichments can be customized
to meet a child at their specific
reading age and stage
7. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE TWO
RESEARCH & ROADMAP
Operating Rule: Iterate the technology
to address new and specific editorial needs
and learning goals
RESEARCH
SUMMER 2012
•Enrichment Analysis: Worked with reading and technology experts
as well as several classroom teachers to review, validate and better
level the current suite of enrichments.
•Developed editorial guidelines to address CCSS.
•Audio Analysis: Worked with music and literacy experts to confirm
developmentally appropriate tempo and pacing of audio books.
SPRING 2012
Extensive research with Storia’s teacher advisory board reinforced
that enriched eBooks (“the lightning bolt books” ) are the most
desired eBooks.
8. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE TWO
RESEARCH & ROADMAP
• Integrate current research and advisor recommendations into the
enrichment process.
• Use enrichments to support and extend learning: increase reading
fluency and comprehension, and help young readers make
connections, inferences and draw conclusions.
• Address the “distractibility” issue: sharpen focus on placement of
enrichments in eBooks, sharpen focus on comprehension of a
specific eBook.
• Sharpen focus on CCSS.
• Increased audio support for longer and more complex texts.
• All learning objectives service the primary goal of supporting a
child’s literacy development and encouraging the “reading habit”.
PEDAGOGY
Who said lightning
never strikes twice?
9. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE TWO
RESEARCH & ROADMAP
ROADMAP
• With input from educational advisors and key Scholastic
stakeholders, new interactions will feature:
• A selection of activities designed to increase classroom use of Storia,
including new templates that focus on Common Core Standards and an
assessment orientation that feeds into the Dashboard
• A variety of enrichments that support chapter books
• New use of videos (context creation for fiction and non-fiction books,
adding VO, additional support for non-fiction titles, combining video
with a writing activity)
• Writing activity/activities
• Refinements to existing engines
• Increase teacher support: Create resources
for educators that offer teaching strategies
and lessons explicitly focused on classroom
use of enriched eBooks.
10. STORIA eBOOKS: PHASE TWO
RESEARCH & ROADMAP
Where the magic really happens: enrichment activities
that motivate young readers and support and extend
their reading experience.
67% of kids and 71% of
parents note the
importance of interactive
activities in eBooks that
scaffold literacy skills
11. ENRICHED eBOOKS:
TEACHER AND ADVISOR FEEDBACK
Linda Foote

Overall, the activities are quite solid
pedagogically. Children can engage with high-
quality books by having the book read aloud, or
they can read it on their own. In either case they
can play games and interact with book-related
ideas through “lightning bolt activities,” all of
which have the potential to reinforce important
vocabulary words as well as concepts from the
book...The read-aloud feature has high
production values. The actors’ narrations are
age-appropriate and appealing.

Oh, and we really do love it that Scholastic is working
to not only engage students but to
provide resources, scaffolding, and extra tools that
take advantage of what you can do with digital books
to increase student learning. Most e-books are simply
flat PDFs of textbooks that don't utilize any of the
media tools (video, audio, dictionary, etc) that can
help more students access texts and become better
readers.
We also love it that in some of the early readers and
picture books, it seems that the interactivities were
chosen to build on each other and provide scaffolding
in a sequence that can increase the possibilities for
students to experience greater success. First pictures
are introduced and students just select the right
picture to match an audio word. Later they have to
match it to the written word. Those books are
remarkable examples of how technology can be used
to increase a student's engagement AND
skills.

Thank you so much for including teachers in this
process of development. I love Storia and am
looking forward to all of your future additions!
