Fashion design is the art of applying design techniques (or
elements and principles) to the marketable world of
clothing, or fashion.
What kind of room has no walls.
What is a mask?
Why do people wear them?
What do masks symbolize?








Apparel is about a 180 billion dollar retail
market nationwide. The largest market, New
York, features over 5,000 fashion showrooms
and eight dedicated fashion schools (including
the worlds largest, Fashion Institute of
Technology) within the confines of its city
limits.
The fashion industry employs about 4.70 million
people; 3.6 million in retail sales, 470,000 in
textile production and 573,000 in apparel
production.
The entire retail industry itself is responsible for
11.6% of all U.S. employment.
Median annual earnings for salaried fashion
designers were $62,610 in May 2006
The lowest 10 percent of fashion designers
earned less than $30,000






Fashion employs
artists from the top
level all the way to the
low level employees.
Artists work as
fashion designers
setting all of the latest
style trends.
They also work in
factories printing and
designing shirts and
other apparel.






One small part of
fashion design is the
art of costume design.
Designers design
everything from
costumes for movies,
musicals, plays, and of
course HALLOWEEN
Today we will be
designing costumes.












Periods and Eras
Scary





Make a list of types of costumes you would like
to design.
Create three sketches designing one, your
favorite, of those costumes.
Using one of the models and tracing paper
create a costume design for Halloween.
Costume must include





Headwear (wig, mask, hat, headband, etc…)
Clothing
Footwear
Accessories (Weapon, wand, jewelry, etc…)
