CaliforniaPart 1 By: Courtney Grace
Calafia sailed to Constantinople to join the other great captions of the world in the siege against the Turks She and the Californians became Christians She married one of the Esplandian’s trusted lieutenants Queen Califia was known to be “very large in person, the most beautiful of them all..” Queen Calafia’s Island
Entered history as a ‘myth’ Among Esplandians allies at the siege were the Californians, a race of black Amazons under the command of Queen Caladfia California was known to be ‘an island on the right hand of the Indies… very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise” Californians brought griffins into battle and use golden weapon's to fight Queen Calafia’s Island
California was known to be an island on the land The bird life on the land became distinct, especially in the mountain forest that dominated the region The birds were lighter, paler, grayer than their counterparts in the interior of the continent The blue-fronted California Jay became a worthy symbol of the state to come Many plants and animals remained flourishing in Queen Calafia’s Island
“The Gold Rush was an epic of personal labor in which men of every social background sought their fortunes through the world of their hands” Work was kept for those who worked hard and long with their hands Ex: A carpenter could make $14 a day in 1849, an unskilled laborer could make $8 a day, and a skilled washerwoman could charge $20 for a load of laundry Making It Happen
The Great Depression hit California late The economy was diversified into agriculture, industrial, entertainment, tourist, and service sectors It started in the 1930s Resulted in social cultural workforce, labor movement in San Francisco Bay area, labor resistant oligarcy, and radical traditions headed back to the nineteenth century Making It Happen
Family farmers developed around 1870s (very popular in northern California) “Wheat king Huge James Glenn, a dentist from Missouri, was by 1880 producing more than half a million bushels of wheat per year on fifty-thousand acres in Colusa County” Because of the accelerated development of railroad cars gave California the title of the ‘agricultural state’ Making It Happen
California was founded on racial distinction and repression “The disenfranchisement of blacks and Asians, the aggression against Mexican land titles, the lynch law in the mines” “White California” movement was in the early twentieth century Ethnic prejudice were considered: Mexican, African, Japanese Americans, and Okies Though they were “white” they were still radicalized Ecumenopolis
Ward Connerly, a Sacramento Businessman, believed that: “personhood transcended race, ethnicity, gender, class, or any combination thereof” He fought that each individual was equal before law He was very disturbed when he found out that the affirmative action programs were keeping Asian students with a 4.0 from top UC schools while admitting African Americans or Latinos with a 3.0 or lower Ecumenopolis
The sociogenetic heritage of California would be ethnic diversity Began during the Native American era There was seventy to eighty language groups and multiple tribes “During the Gold Rush, diversity exfoliated into brilliant hues as nearly every portion of the planent sent its people to California-as, J.S. Holliday said, “the world rushed in” Ecumenopolis
