Demonstrate how the change in motion of an object is
related to the strength of the force acting upon the
object and to the mass of the object.
Activity: Force & Mass
Question
How does mass affect the force strength?
Engage
Tell students you are going to use force to move our desks to make a new seating
chart.
Explore
Have students move their desks into a new room arrangement. While they are
moving their desk ask them to describe the difference between the pushing and
pulling forces they are using on their desks vs. their chairs.
Explain
MEAP Assessment Clarification
• The larger the force the greater the change in motion.
• Heavier objects need a stronger force to cause a change in motion. Lighter
objects need less force to cause a change in motion.
After all desks are moved, hold class discussing on finding and what they noticed.
Students fill out a claim/evidence page
Claims Evidence
John said that is was harder to move my The desk has more mass and it took a
desk stronger force to start the motion
Ben said that it was easy to move my The chair has less mass and it took less
chair force to start the motion
Elaborate
Find other objects in the room to move and see what needs more or less force to
move. Did the object have more or less mass.
