2. • Shown here is a long shot of the whole band at the beginning of their music video
„Juicebox‟. The shot clearly indicates the band create their own music and feature in their
videos. The long shot works well because we can see all of the band members and also all
of the instruments used such as: electric guitars and drums. The setting stereotypically
looks like its in a recording studio because the theme of it is that they are on the radio “on
the air”. The long shot also gives the audience a distinct view of what the band members
are wearing, the majority of them are wearing all black, however the lead singer appears to
have on blue red and brown, although costume will have been planned I think it‟s been
done to look as if they have just woke up and put on their everyday normal clothes.
3. • A medium close up is used here of the man who is the presenter of the radio station, initially I
would say the band were very clever in picking him because he is a well known actor who
creates a comedy effect in a lot of his movies. For mise en scene, he is wearing a green t-shirt
which says on it „I got lucky on prom night‟ – again just for entertainment purposes and to add a
bit of humour to the gothic rock song, also he has glasses on for reasons I do not know, he
could maybe actually heed them or again just part of his comical look. The fact it‟s a medium
close up could indicate he‟s quite important to the video, also so the audience can read what is
comically written on his t-shirt. The setting is in a radio station and we know this because of the
equipment used like: the mic, the box and the headphones, in addition to this; the way he
speaks tells us he is live on air. Choosing this actor to star in the video was most likely to attract
the audience, he‟s very famous in the film industry and if people seen him in this they may listen
to the song which is reaching out to wider target audience.
4. • Here a close up of a band member is shown when he sings, close ups maybe just
indicate importance however in this case all of the band members have a close up at
some point so initially its used to show who is singing or perhaps to put emphasis on
the lyrics been said at that point. The Strokes are a rock band and their stereotypical
goth like hair makes an appearance on all of the band. Here this member has long
black hair that comes over his face and it‟s what would be expected . Their eyes also
look a bit dark, makeup looks to of been used here to darken the eyes to create a
gloomy rock effect and the close up allows the audience to see this. The stereotypical
audience would probably have a similar look to this and feel like they aspire to be
these role models they look up too! The audience enjoys their music so will try to
replicate their overall star image.
5. • A birds eye view is used here to show one girl that is looking from above on the man
being sick below. We get a clear image of him falling out of the taxi drunk and then
vomiting. This could indicate how low he‟s feeling because of the alcohol and the fact
he is on the floor shows he has hit rock bottom. He is wearing quite casual clothes;
i.e. blue jeans and a plain green top with a waste coat jacket, which is again
stereotypically quick rock based and goth like which supports the genre of the video.
The people who enjoy rock would most likely find this image ok to view whereas a
person who enjoys pop music may find it irrelevant and vile, it just supports the
people who enjoy rock genre and enjoy seeing grunge, dirt and aspects that could be
seen as quite taboo and inappropriate.
6. • An over the shoulder shot is used where a male is in the toilet using the urinals also he looks at
his phone. It makes the audience feel that someone is maybe behind him watching him or just
creates suspense as if something is about to happen. It creates an suspicious eerie tone to it
and also fashions a sense of unknown. The low key lighting stereotypically may just imply its
night time, however we can see the mise en scene looks grungy and dull which supports the
rock genre of darkness. The male used looks like a typical boy who listens to rock, primarily
because of the dark swept hair and the black clothing. In post production of this music video,
the audience would have been the main focus, impressing the audience and trying to portray
what they like. So clothes, makeup, scenes and general narration would have been all down to
maybe audience profile and what maybe typical goth or emo adolescents would enjoy viewing.
