Self-Directed Learning
“In its broadest meaning, ’self-directed learning’
describes a process by which individuals take the
initiative, with our without the assistance of others, in
diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning
goals, identify human and material resources for
learning, choosing and implement appropriate learning
strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes.”
(Malcolm Knowles, 1975, p. 18)
Why SDL?
To inculcate the following in our students:
As self-directed learners,
• to demonstrate greater responsibility in making
learning meaningful
• to be motivated, self-disciplined and independent
• to view problems as challenges, and enjoy learning
How can tutors help?
• Explain the rationale of self-directed learning
to students
• Facilitate during SDL period
• Encourage students to reflect on what they
did after SDL period
