3. Codes and Conventions:
•There is a large usage of images next to article topics, there is 33 images on the homepage of
their website. The images appear randomly placed which a range of sizes, however the
information and images are divided into three sections.
•Newspaper sub-headings; each article is placed within a sub heading and categorised with
similar articles. The main articles are placed towards the top of the page labelled news; Sport,
The Big Story, Other News. These headings make it easier for different people to locate the
articles which are of interest to them.
•The colour theme; the main colours used are black and red, both colours stand out and create
a sense of urgency which draws the reader into reading the article.
•Text; the font of the text reflects that of the font used for the title of the Canterbury Times; it
is structured black and bold.
•Advertisement; The website does not contain a large range of adverts compared to the
published newspaper, however at the bottom of the page there is a section for ‘deals’ which
acts a self promotion for local businesses.

5. Codes and Conventions:
•Images; the website for the Thanet Gazette has 34 images on the page; there is 3 main
columns similar to that of the Canterbury Times, the information is in the centre of the page
leaving two spaces at either side of the screen blank.
•Advertising; there is four ‘deal’ advertisements towards the bottom of the page; however they
are not all located together as we saw in the Canterbury Times, they are randomly dispersed.
•Colours; the main colours featured on the website is black, blue and red, all of the colours are
vibrant and bold with the aim to catch the readers eye.
•Text; the font type used is blunt, bold and is ideally used to catch the readers eye it is a
simplistic san serif, practically identical to that used on the Canterbury Times website.
•Newspaper sub-headings; the subheading for the website page, is two sections both labelled
news, sport and other news.

6. Codes and conventions I am using in my newspaper website:
I am planning to use my previous research in the slides to form my own codes and conventions which I
aim to follow to reflect the image of a newspaper website; this is to make my website look as authentic as
possible.
•Text; I plan on using three main colours which I would also reflect in my newspaper pages and my
billboard; ideally I would use blue, black and a deep green, I would use the red to highlight key words
and articles, whilst the black would be used for main text and for the colour of the title, the green would
be used to supplement the red text and highlight any other non-main articles.
•Images, I plan on using a range of images with a range of subjects to reflect a large quantity of article
topics; ideally I would like some images based upon people, however I also do want to include article
titles based upon the area, hence I will also be using scenery and images of local buildings.
•Advertisement, I do want to include more advertisements than I saw in both the Thanet Gazette and the
Canterbury Times, I would like to include 6 adverts from local companies, this is to promote the local
area, since it is a local newspaper ideally I would like the website to reflect that fact and promote local
businesses.
•Fonts sizes, I plan on using a range of text sizes, the larger text is ideally for the main articles, whilst the
smaller font text is for subheadings and article information.

7. • National newspapers have a contract for newsreaders online, this enables the newspaper company to
gain profit from uploading their online news articles. Local newspapers such as the Canterbury Times
do not include a pay to read policy for their website.
• Newspapers such as The Times have a more vast quantity of articles packed into a smaller space,
therefore the font size is smaller and there are four columns compared to the local newspapers 3, this
allows a more varied types of news to be published.
• The Times has more subheadings for each section, there is 11 subheadings for the articles, they are as
follows; Times+, Times Offer, Arts, Best of the Blogs, Life, Business, Sport, Barclays Premier League
videos, Columnists, World News, Latest UK News. Whereas The Canterbury Times has only four
subheadings.
• Colours, The times has each subheading in a specific colour, green, purple, blue, red, burgundy and
orange, this makes the website look more vibrant and loud, also it highlights the article topics through
the subheading. Typically smaller newspapers such as Thanet Gazette and other local newspaper
websites do not feature such a wide range, yet this is to be expected as there is considerable less
articles hence less subheadings.
