3. The Differences between Madagascar and Epic
Animated movies are absolutely everywhere. Approximately everything in the media
is animated especially educational television programs and movie backgrounds. When I hear
the word animation, the first thing to come to my mind is some kind of cartoon. Did you like
to watch cartoons during your childhood? The answer is usually yes, especially for me. When
I was a child, under the age of seven, I mostly enjoyed spending all of my hours watching
cartoons and I still remember all the imperative slogans, such as ' I am the king of
Madagascar, Alex the Lion.’ All of these slogans result from those cartoons and I actually
take cartoons as my role models and reflect the characters in my daily life. For example, I
used to believe everything in cartoons, and now, I feel like I have a good imagination and am
able to apply my creativity in my studies. However, of all animated films, I like Madagascar
and Epic the most as both of these films were produced by Disney. On the other hand, both of
these movies have different histories, narration of plots, characters and use different types of
technology to produce excellent films.
First of all, I will discuss the major difference of history between Madagascar and
Epic. Madagascar is a computer animated comedy film released in year 2005 and this movie
was the first film in the series. However, Epic is the latest movie produced in the year 2013
by Blue Sky studio and basically this film is based on William Joyce's 1996 book which was
directed by Chris Wedge. Chris Wedge fell into the common animator's entrap of making the
"human" characters a lot duller than the nonhuman creepy-crawlies. On the other hand,
Madagascar was directed by Eric Damell from DreamWorks Animation who produced the
fantastic animation technique which is fun and eyes catching. However, Madagascar is the
winner of Academy Award-winning Shrek in 2006 which were proved the strength of the
comedic actor who voice the key animal character.
4. Secondly, another difference between Madagascar and Epic is the narration of the
plot. Basically, Madagascar is about the zoo animals leaving the comforts of man-made
habitats for an interesting adventure to the wild in this animated family film. In the movie,
after escaping from the zoo, four friends which are a lion, a hippo, a zebra and a giraffe are
sent back to Africa. When their ship capsizes, stranding them on Madagascar which is an
island populated by crazy critters, the pals must adapt to jungle life and their new roles as
wild animals. On the other hand, the film Epic is about a wondrous landscape and features a
world jam-packed with epic stories and battles. The plot of this film is the relationships
between a rebellious teenage girl and her father, whom have grown apart since the death of
the girl’s mother. Alongside that, a continuous battle rages deep in the forest between the
forces of good and evil. Later in the movie, the teenage girl finds herself magically
transported into that secret universe and in order to save the world she bands together with a
rag-tag team of unlikely heroes.
The third major difference between the film Madagascar and Epic are the interesting
characters. In Madagascar, the main character is a lion, named Alex. He is an African lion
and the hero of the film. In the movie, Alex is a protective self-proclaimed leader within his
group of friends and he is also smart, quick thinking and fast on his feet. Alex is used to a life
of comfort in the zoo, but later learns to settle into the wild. In contrast, the main character in
Epic is the teenager Mary "MK" Katherine; she is a headstrong spirited teenager who has a
strained relationship with her father. However, she is an intelligent and brave character and is
seen to help in protecting the forest against the evil Boggans. Along her dangerous journey,
she shows great courage in protecting the flower pod bestowed upon her by Queen Tara.
Other than the difference of character, the fourth major difference between
Madagascar and Epic is the technology used to produce the films. In the world of business,
animation has become more and more prominent in movie theatres today. However, during
5. the time of production of the film Madagascar, there was the tough process of hand-drawn
animation and that actually required "artists" working on the animation part. However,
although it's only a 2D action movie, I felt it is an animated masterpiece that is able show fun
and enjoyable comedies for all. In contrast, Epic is a 3D adventure- fantasy animated film
produced using the latest technology through beautiful production design, visual artistry, and
crafted with just enough flair to make for pleasantly engaging viewing.
In a nutshell, the differences between Madagascar and Epic were successfully
demonstrated through the differences in history, narration of plot, interesting characters and
the different types of technology used to produce excellent films. However, both of the films
were an evolution that included the fun character comedy and depth of emotion. Animation
film has a huge impact on our life. Without it, much of the technology we use today would
not even have the ability to function. In my opinion, the future is a bright one for animation
and those who choose to become a part of it are in for one interesting story. The future of
animation is unpredictable, as every future is.
