2. CONCEPT OF TRADE UNION
Trade union is:-
It is a association of wage earners or employees;
Whose principle purpose is to regulate the relations
between workers and employers;
whose leader is elected for the interests of the
employees within the workplace; and
recognized for collective bargaining.
4. Protective Functions-
These functions include protecting the worker’s
interests.
Bargain on issues like hike in wages, providing more
benefits or job security etc.
• Fraternal functions-
These functions include providing financial and non-
financial assistance to workers during the periods of
strikes and lockouts.
Issues like medical facilities during slackness,
provision of education, recreational and housing
facilities, provision of social and religious benefits, etc.
5. Political Functions-
These functions include affiliating the union to a
political party,
Helping the political party in collecting donations,
Seeking the help of political parties during the
periods of strikes and lock-outs.
• Social functions-
These functions include carrying out social
activities, discharging social responsibilities
through various sections of the society like
educating the customers etc.
9. Craft of skills union : To represent skilled
workers.
Industrial unions : To represent the members of
one particular industry.
General unions : Unions which recruit workers
from all types of industries and with any level or
range of skills e.g. – the Manufacturing Science
and Finance Union.
White-collar unions : Represent office workers.
