Background Background
Current Trends, Sightings: Reactions to the Stereotype:
• Exhibit A: very generic or common aspects, • Music in Hip-Hop (ie. Mountain Brothers
claimed as inspiration/ generalizations of the from Philadelphia, LMF from Hong Kong)
culture/caricatures of the face, floral patterns, • Filmmaker Justin Lin (Films such as Better
and other things/lack of understanding Luck Tomorrow, Finishing the Game)
• Actor Bruce Lee, grandfather of Mixed Martial
• Exhibit B: The male/female relationship Arts through JKD(Jeet Kune Do), a mixture
has been one of undersexed/oversexed, of what he considered the best in all styles of
emphasizing the foreignness of them, fighting
demonizing the subject
• Exhibit C: Reactions to stereotypes results in
constant reflection of the self, identity issues,
and the feeling of the other. A fear of being
stereotyped/typecasted, an embrace of
culture, or the complete removal

THESIS 1
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Background
Quotations from Contemporary Thinkers:
Here’s my idea: if Japan had not modernized towards Westernization, but had been able to impregnate
its own traditional culture with modern science and develop naturally, surely it would have produced
a unique design culture that could have competed with the west. This design culture would have
been completely been different from that developed by the Japan that endured the Meiji Restoration.”
“I am not writing from a standpoint of anti-globalism. It’s been a long, long time since the onset of
active international exchange; it would be nonsense today to insist on the idiosyncrasies of individual
cultures. I simply believe it must be meaningful to be conscious of the part of Japan that’s capable of
contributing to universal values. As a designer who was born in Japan, I would like to concentrate on
quietly delving the ground beneath my feet. It may be that I want to know my roots a little better. Every
time I step out into the world, I find my affection for Japan grows, and yet I also feel frustrated with
the fact that I am not more acutely embodying that culture. I don’t know if this feeling has reached
some other realm, but lately I’ve had more and more opportunities to encounter locales and cultural
aspects that convey Japan’s individuality to the present, and to meet fascinating individuals who
carry this legacy.”
