System
The Endocrine System is a
collection of glands: exocrine
glands and endocrine glands.
The glands in the endocrine
system are the pineal gland,
gonads, adrenal glands,
pancreas, thyroid gland and
the pituitary gland.

3. Endocrine
Hormones
• Endocrine hormones are
released by the thyroid,
parathyroid, and other
glands, under the general
direction of the “Master”
Pituitary gland.
• Hormones are products of
living cells that circulate in
bodily fluids, as blood or
sap and produces a specific
often stimulatory effect on
the activity of cells.

The suffix dipsia refers to

• The suffix –uria refers to
the condition of too much
urine.
• Caused by an increase in
urine production.
• Related to polydipsia
• Symptom of diabetes
inspidus.

7. Pineal
Glands
• The pineal glands produce
the hormone melatonin

8. The Gonads
• The gonads are the organs
responsible for producing
sex cells
• The Ovaries in women
• The testes in men

9. Adrenal
glands
• The adrenal glands are a
pair of glands composed of
two sections.
• The cortex
• The medulla

10. Pancreas
• The pancreas produces the
hormones insulin and
glucagon
• Located in the lower
curvature of the stomach
• Only organ with endocrine
and exocrine functions

11. Parathyroid
Gland
• The parathyroid gland
produces the parathyroid
hormone.
• Regulates the amount of
calcium in the blood.
• Located on the dorsal
surface of the thyroid
gland.

12. Pituitary Gland
• Known as the “Master”
gland since it controls the
functions of many other
endocrine glands.
• Composed of two lobes:
the anterior and posterior
lobes
• Both lobes are controlled
by the hypothalamus
