Introduction to Mass Media
Unit Description  The history of news reporting in the United States. The responsibility of the media. The responsibility of the student press.
Essential Questions  What types of communication are special to the mass media? What are some historic milestones in the development of mass media? How do the mass media reflect society and shape culture? What are a journalist's responsibilities? What role should the student press play in its community?
Enduring Understandings(what you really need to “get”) Mass media is a record human experience. Journalists write the "first draft of history.” Journalism is the "fourth estate" of government. Mass media have the power to shape culture. With power comes responsibility. Professional standards of journalism are worth developing and defending.
Mastery Objectives Know the major events in the development of news reporting in the United States. Understand the meaning and limitations of the freedom of the press. Appreciate the roles and responsibilities of journalists, including the student press.
