2. *Caroline was born in 1926 in Missouri, her mother was a black
slave and her father was the white slave owner.
*She grew up as a slave and dreamed of was going to Canada
and escaping slavery.
•* She was left alone after her mother and sister died.
3. •As a teenager her father died and Caroline was now owned
by her aunt, Mrs. Charles Hall.
•* She became a slender dark haired girl.
•* In 1842 Caroline was finally 16 years old.
•One day when Caroline was at work her Aunt was mad so she
cut her hair.
•* On Independence 1842 St. Louis, Missouri Caroline decided
to run away!
• * When Mr. and Mrs. Hall figured out that Caroline ran away
they were furious because she was at least worth $800.
4. • *When she decided to leave she got on a steamboat along
the Mississippi River.
• * She was an African American but didn’t have very dark
skin, so she stood by some rich white girls to try to blend in.
* When she finally got to St. Louis she had to be careful
because she was still Mrs. Hall’s property.
* They hired someone to find Caroline and bring her back.
They got Spencer.
* As Caroline got off the boat she met a man that new she
was a runaway slave and insisted on helping her.
5. * The man told Caroline to leave Alton, so Caroline used her
money to buy a ticket to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
* Then she met Titball who helped her for a while, she trusted
him.
* Then some boy told Caroline that Titball betrayed her and
was going to turn her in for the money award.
* The boy took Caroline to a place only he knew about.
* The boy told the people from underground railroad and plans
were made to help Caroline. Soon her life become a big game
of hide-and-seek.
* Next Asahel Finch helped her runaway when he heard about
her.
6. * She and Finch found a place for her to hide, it was in a barrel
near the corner of Grand Avenue.
* Lyman Goodnow helped her next, he took her to Canada
where she would be completely free.
* She had to hide in many different places.
7. *Spencer, the man tracking her, was in a buggy right in front of
her so she hid in the bottom of her buggy.
* After a long time of running Goodnow and Caroline finally
crossed the Detroit River and she was free.
* When she was on the boat she thought things looked familiar
and she thought Lyman was betraying her and taking her
home, but he wasn’t.
8. * In Canada she married a man named Allen.
* When she married Allen she was almost twenty and he was
much older than her.
* They had six children three girls and three boys.
