Mining in minnesota
Do you think iron ore mining affects you? How do you think you would get from place to place without it? Do you think your parents would be willing to pay double or triple for cars, buses, trains and other vehicles?
What you will be learning: Researching four mines iron ore mines in Minnesota within your groups. Talk in your group and answer six questions about the mine you will be researching. Present your findings to your classmates on each of the mines you researched.
History of Minnesota Mining: Minnesota's Iron Range supplied late 19th and 20th century America with the iron needed to fuel industrialization, economic expansion, and military might. The history of the Iron Range tells the history of America; it is the story of immigrants, of conflict and assimilation, of people creating lives for themselves, their families, and for others.  It is a story about industrial America and U.S. military build-ups in the first and second world wars.
Minnesota’s Iron Range
Minnesota’s Iron Range: Immigrants from over 40 countries settled this region in the late 1800’s Many communities in the mining area were established around the 20th century The Iron Range has 35 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places for you to visit Over 1,000 years of Native American history and culture is on display at the Bois Forte Heritage Center where the Atisokanigamig "Legend House" features the proud heritage of the Bois forte Band of Ojibwe.
Mines We Will Be Researching: Milford Mine  Hull Rust Mine Hill Annex Mine  Soudan Mine
Answer These Questions On Your Mine In Each Group: Where is your mine located?  What iron range is it part of?  When did your mine open? Is the mine still being used?  How is it being used? How big is your mine? What makes your mine special? What kind of impact did the mine have on the community?  For example how many jobs did it add, did it build towns, and did it bring in people from other places, what happened if the mine closed?
