Analyzing Data
Essential Question What is data?
Unit Questions 1.) What are different ways to gather and analyze data? 2.)What types of data can you gather from glyphs?
Content Questions 1.) What is a glyph? 2.) What are some observations you can gather from glyphs? 3.) How can reading a glyph help you analyze information?
Summary of Unit In this unit students will be introduced to data analysis and will learn how to collect and interpret data.  In this unit we will be learn alternative ways to collect and read data.  For the hands on project, we will be creating and analyzing glyphs. This project will help demonstrate to students how information can be gained and analyzed in different ways.
Role of the Teacher The role of the teacher during this unit will first be to explain and introduce the topic of data analysis and analyze, interpret, and collect data in different ways.  For the hands on glyph project, the role of the teacher would be to provide the directions and the materials for the students to use.  Students will be expected to complete and analyze their glyphs accurately.
Role of the Parent This assignment will be performed and completed in the classroom.  If parents could before we start this project please go over with you child how to read and follow specific directions.  If students have exposure beforehand as to how to do this, completing this assignment will prove to be easier for them.
Role of the Student For this assignment, students will be expected to create and analyze their own glyphs correctly.  Students will be expected to follow exact directions when creating their glyphs and should be properly able to analyze other’s glyphs.
Benefits of the Unit At the end of this unit, students will have a clear understanding of collecting and analyzing data.  By the end of this unit, students will have a basic understanding of the concept of data analysis.
Objectives According to the Alabama Course of Study for 5th grade, objective number 14 will be meet by the end of this unit. 14.) Analyze data collected from a survey or experiment to determine results and factors that affect results.
Standards Upon completion of this unit, the below standard would have been met. Standard: Given directions, students will appropriately construct and gather information from glyphs.
Project Based Learning Inside our school for this school year, use teachers have been experimenting with a concept called project based learning. Project based learning is a teaching strategy that involves engaging students in projects that they can relate to their real everyday lives. Project based learning helps students explore real life problems and strategies while learning the curriculum and team building skills at the same time.  Students who are engaged in project based learning are able to understand certain skills more and also have a better recall of things they have just learned.  Technology can also be incorporated in project base learning also.

  • 3. Unit Questions 1.) What are different ways to gather and analyze data? 2.)What types of data can you gather from glyphs?
  • 4. Content Questions 1.) What is a glyph? 2.) What are some observations you can gather from glyphs? 3.) How can reading a glyph help you analyze information?
  • 5. Summary of Unit In this unit students will be introduced to data analysis and will learn how to collect and interpret data. In this unit we will be learn alternative ways to collect and read data. For the hands on project, we will be creating and analyzing glyphs. This project will help demonstrate to students how information can be gained and analyzed in different ways.
  • 6. Role of the Teacher The role of the teacher during this unit will first be to explain and introduce the topic of data analysis and analyze, interpret, and collect data in different ways. For the hands on glyph project, the role of the teacher would be to provide the directions and the materials for the students to use. Students will be expected to complete and analyze their glyphs accurately.
  • 7. Role of the Parent This assignment will be performed and completed in the classroom. If parents could before we start this project please go over with you child how to read and follow specific directions. If students have exposure beforehand as to how to do this, completing this assignment will prove to be easier for them.
  • 8. Role of the Student For this assignment, students will be expected to create and analyze their own glyphs correctly. Students will be expected to follow exact directions when creating their glyphs and should be properly able to analyze other’s glyphs.
  • 9. Benefits of the Unit At the end of this unit, students will have a clear understanding of collecting and analyzing data. By the end of this unit, students will have a basic understanding of the concept of data analysis.
  • 10. Objectives According to the Alabama Course of Study for 5th grade, objective number 14 will be meet by the end of this unit. 14.) Analyze data collected from a survey or experiment to determine results and factors that affect results.
  • 11. Standards Upon completion of this unit, the below standard would have been met. Standard: Given directions, students will appropriately construct and gather information from glyphs.
  • 12. Project Based Learning Inside our school for this school year, use teachers have been experimenting with a concept called project based learning. Project based learning is a teaching strategy that involves engaging students in projects that they can relate to their real everyday lives. Project based learning helps students explore real life problems and strategies while learning the curriculum and team building skills at the same time. Students who are engaged in project based learning are able to understand certain skills more and also have a better recall of things they have just learned. Technology can also be incorporated in project base learning also.
