A01 – Understanding Photographs – War
This document is going to be based on War photography.
War photography are photographs that are taken of the different conditions and
situations that happen within warzones. Photographers such as Robert Capa
have taken photographs of the different conditions or events that happen within
warzones. Robert Capa took a lot of war photos, mainly of World War II.
This is one of the World
War II photos that were
taken by Robert Capa.
This photo shows two
people looking at a large
pile of dead bodies, which
are most likely soldiers
that were killed during an
attack on the beach.
The photo itself is quite
old because it is naturally
black and white colouring
due to being taken around
1940-45, and colour was
not yet introduced
available to cameras at
that time, so you cannot
tell what the main colours
within this photo are, but
because of the black and white, a lot of shadows and darker colours are shown.
The purpose of this photo could be to show other people at the time what sort of
things happened in warzones, and what sort of situation war really is. Capa could
have wanted to show the amount of casualties that were happening at the time,
and show everyone who thought going to war was glorious what it was really
like, and how many people were dying.

This is another photo that
was taken by Robert Capa
and it is of a German
soldier being held at
gunpoint by an American
soldier, who is either going
to capture him or kill him.
Again, this photograph
was taken sometime
around 1940-45 as it is in
black and white, and it is
set during World War II.
The photographs’ main
colour is white due to the
surrounding areas of
snow. Again, due to the
black and white colouring, it is easier to see the darker areas of the photograph,
but there is not really any shadow, which could be because of the area they are
currently in.
The picture itself is quite bleak as there is nothing else really within it with the
exception of the two soldiers and a barbed wire fence. Apart from that, it is a
barren wasteland; there are not even any more soldiers or signs of life
altogether.
The meaning of this photograph is not fully clear as there is not much happening
within it, but the American soldier capturing the German soldier could have been
used as a source of encouragement to the American people, meaning that they
can win the war and beat the Germans.
