Women’s Rights
Principles of Catholic Social Teaching
1. Life and Dignity of the Human Person
 All people are sacred, made in the image and likeness of God.
◦ Despite race, age, disability, lack of success, GENDER, etc.
 In many countries, women are treated as objects rather than
as people. This violates a women’s Right to Life and Dignity.
◦ For example, women around the world are forced into the slave trade as
prostitutes against their will. At this time, women are not able to be seen as
sacred.
Modern Day Form of Slavery
 Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings for
the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation or forced
labor; a modern-day form of slavery. All women,
including children, are forced into prostitution as early as
the age of 10.
It’s Really Happening
Taken is a movie relating to the
modern day human trafficking
and slave trade of women. A
young girl travels to Paris with a
friend, and the two girls are
forced into prostitution.
Although the movie is based on
a “true story”, the events that
take place in the film are really
happening to women around
the world.
2. Rights and Responsibilities
 People have a fundamental right to life, food, shelter, health
care, education and employment. All people have a right to
participate in decisions that affect their lives.
 For example, many women, young and old, are forced into
marriages-- which is a decision that affects their life.
◦ Women and girls are regularly wed against their will in Africa, Asia and the
Middle East.
◦ Human rights experts tell of fathers threatening to murder daughters who
wouldn't agree to a union, and parents claiming they'd commit suicide if a
girl didn't give in.
A Child Bride
In India and other countries, parents marry off girls as young as eight
Women Forced into Arranged Marriages
 For many young women around the world, marriage isn't
a joy but a living nightmare—one created by their own
families. The stories are shocking: Last February, when a
23-year-old Turkish woman divorced the man her parents
forced her to wed, her brother shot her in the head three
times.
3. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
 People have a right to decent and productive work, fair
wages, private property and economic initiative.
 For example, even though a law has been promoted to
protect Chinese women’s rights, Chinese women are still
discriminated. It's hard for women to get jobs even if they
have degrees. Most good jobs are open only to men. Women
aren't offered many nice jobs that pay fair.
