1. Music Video Concept Paper
Proposal and Treatment
General Concept:
The general feel of the music video? A sappy.Dramatic. Dark song that tells the story of 21st century love and
hate. With a hint of rock, a little pop and a whole lot of piano the video will be very contemporary and visually
modern. A sense of mystery and tautness will set the atmosphere with an obscure, gloomy and sombre setting.
Distinct fusions of styles will give an allusion of femininity yet still show signs of eeriness.
Below are some guidelines that I would like to apply during the process of creating the music video:
The video will be performance based- there will be no specific structure or interrelation between the
scenes.
Shooting will take place at nightfall to provide an enigmatic and ominous feeling to help create the
right atmosphere (as stated above) for the setting. However one scene will need to be filmed at
twilight- it will still give the perception that is it is night.
The female artist will visually be seen as angelic and delicate in her features- heavy 'gothic' make-up;
her clothing must show signs of femininity, yet still portray her as menacing and edgy.
An Instrumental, contemporary, all boy rock band needs to be provided- must include pianist. May
need to include background vocalist.
The Mise en Scene will switch between three settings, each one providing a different backdrop for the
artist. These will include:
1. A mesmerizing, mythical lake with a 'dark fairytale' ambience- must include a pier
or pathway of some sort into the lake. The sky will be brightly lit with hundreds of
lanterns.
2. A chilling, bloodcurdling, creepy yet magical looking forest set ablaze
3. And an exposed area buried deep in the forest confined by thousands of acres of
trees. The band and artist will stand 'centre stage' surrounded by glistening candles.
Minimal Lighting will be used on location:
1. During the forest blaze only a silhouette of the artist will be visible- the fire will be
placed on during post-production as an after-effect. A silhouette will be created by
placing a bright studio light behind the artist; if this is not possible it will be created
by placing the subject in front of a natural light, such as the sun- the best possible
results will be achieved when it's low in the sky, just above the horizon.
2. Ideally for the forest scene the lighting will come from natural sources such as the
moon and candles. The effect I want to be given across is very melancholic.
3. I would like the same method to be applied to the lake setting; clear shots of the
moon need to be within the frame.
A dolly and track will be used to film the silhouette of the artist walking through the
forest.

Concerns:
Weather may not provide appropriate lighting- too cloudy, rain, too much sun...
Meeting Deadline.
We're only able to film on a full moon meaning there is a limited amount of time.
Missing Twilight.
No confidence in using cameras.
No editing experience
Weather ruining set- candles burning out due to wind or rain, lanterns not lighting,
equipment getting wet.
Any issues with lighting can easily be sorted- effects can be added on in post-production for
the desired look or we can easily change the lighting effect we were looking for. As long as
we follow a precise schedule and everybody knows there job roles everything should run
smoothly. Checking the weather beforehand will help us have an idea n appropriate times to
film- if it does suddenly begin to train shelter can sought.
