NSCS CHAPTER CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE I
The name of this organization shall be The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Central
Michigan University.
ARTICLE II
Section 1
The purpose of this organization shall be as follows:
A. To recognize and celebrate high achievement among first and second year students
in all academic disciplines.
B. To encourage and promote high standards throughout the collegiate experience.
C. To provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership development for
members.
D. To provide scholarships, such as the Merit Award, Scholar Abroad, Scholar at Sea,
and Graduate to member(s) who successfully apply and compete for these awards.
E. To organize and encourage learning opportunities through community service.
F. To foster an overall appreciation for the value of the higher education experience.
G. To continue to uphold the standards determined by the Association of College
Honor Societies as part of the organization’s membership.
Section 2
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars agrees to abide by all rules and regulations
which have been set forth for all students and organizations at Central Michigan University.
ARTICLE III
Section 1
Membership into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is by invitation only and is
open to students in all academic disciplines who meet the following criteria:
A. Successfully completed at least twelve credit hours but no more than sixty.
B. First or second year student at the time of affirmation.
C. Attain at least a 3.4 grade point average on the 4.0 scale and rank in the top 20% of
their class.
D. Complete and return the membership profile and confirmation of society
membership.
E. Pay the Society induction and lifetime membership fee.

Section 2
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Central Michigan University is a chapter of the
national organization The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. A Board of Directors,
including the President and Executive Vice-President of the student led National
Leadership Council, sets policy and governance for the national organization and
determines all Society fees.
Section 3
Membership standards for the Society do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion,
nationality, disability, age, financial status, social status or sexual orientation.
ARTICLE IV
Section 1
This chapter should have a leadership group comprised of a president, executive vice
president, vice president for community service, vice president for Planning to Achieve
Collegiate Excellence (PACE), secretary, treasurer and any other officer that the Society
chapter believes necessary to meet its goals.
Section 2
The Society officers shall be elected by a fair and democratic process.
A. Elections shall be held and reported to the national office on or before April 15.
B. The outgoing officer board will hold an officer transition meeting with the incoming
officer board.
C. The outgoing officer board will end their term at the end of the spring
quarter/semester.
D. Newly elected officers will begin their term at the end of the spring
quarter/semester.
Section 3
The duties and responsibilities will be defined as follows:
A. For all officers:
1. Committing fully to the NSCS chapter officer position for the duration of
your term.
2. Living the NSCS culture as an active member of the NSCS.
3. Promoting opportunities for members to make the most of their NSCS
experiences.
4. Recruiting members year-round, culminating with the member invitation
season in the spring.
5. Communicating information and reporting activities regularly to the NSCS
national office both in times of success and in times of struggle.
6. Holding an annual Induction Convocation to honor, inspire and engage new
NSCS members.

7. Running an effective chapter and planning events on campus that engage
NSCS members.
8. Sharing chapter achievements with administrators, faculty and media on
campus.
9. Upholding NSCS standards in all communications to effectively brand NSCS
locally and nationally as an exceptional honors society.
10. Sustaining the life of the chapter through comprehensive officer transitions
and training.
11. Developing personal and professional skills through leadership
opportunities.
12. Attend all officer meetings and events
B. President
1. Attend the Leadership Summit; if for any reason the president cannot
attend the Summit then he/she shall find another officer or member
to attend. Beginning in 2007-2008, chapters who register an officer
and/or member for the Summit but do not actually attend the Summit
will be penalized one STAR status level if applicable.
2. Register chapter on campus as a recognized student organization.
3. Signature is included on all chapter banking records; including as a co-
signer for chapter checks.
4. Work with officer board to organize, plan and facilitate the growth and
success of the chapter.
5. Ensure all officers understand and carry out responsibilities.
6. Meet once a month with chapter advisor.
7. Maintain positive relationship with school by abiding by university/college
guidelines.
8. Act as a liaison between the national office and local chapter.
9. Meet all deadlines set by the national office.
10. Determine Distinguished Member nominations with member and officer
input.
11. Organize officer elections and submit results to the national office by April
15.
12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by
Chapter
C. Executive Vice President
1. Fulfill the duties of the chapter president in his/her absence
2. Oversee the planning of the Induction convocation and other membership
recruitment activities
3. Plan and coordinate chapter officer meetings.
4. Organize chapter general membership meetings.
5. Secure speakers for meetings, events and other activities

6. Initiate collaboration between chapter and other groups/organizations
7. Fulfill the duties of the chapter president in his/her absence
8. Ensure that chapter meets minimum STAR requirements
9. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
D. Vice President for Community Service
1. Work diligently to involve members in community service initiatives.
2. Organize and coordinate service events
3. Be prepared, visible and accessible at all projects.
4. Promote and involve members in community service initiatives at all levels:
a. Planning.
b. Publicity.
c. Execution.
d. Post follow up.
5. Collaborate with other campus or community organizations for events.
6. Ensure appropriate follow up after each activity.
a. Send thank you cards via US mail.
b. Send thank you e-mail to participants.
7. Work with the national office to involve the chapter in the NSCS days of
service:
a. Make a Difference Day
b. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
c. National Youth Service Day
8. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
E. Vice President of Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence (PACE)
1. Work with the national PACE coordinator on all components of PACE.
2. Establish/maintain/expand the NSCS PACE program on your campus.
3. Establish and maintain relationship with partner school/organization staff.
4. Plan regular PACE activities, which include: ongoing school visits,
assemblies, and/or a March to College Day.
5. Recruit and train PACE volunteers on campus (this may involve non-NSCS
members.)
6. Provide ongoing communication and support to volunteers.
7. Be an active, energetic, and visible participant at all PACE events.
8. Regularly communicate with the national office staff person in charge of
PACE about all components of the program.
9. Submit updates about PACE activities to the national office via Report PACE
Activities in the Officer Tools at www.nscs.org
10. Solicit feedback from volunteers, students, and partner
school/organization staff.

11. Solicit written testimonials from volunteers, students, and partner
school/organization staff.
12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
F. Vice President for Membership/Public Relations
1. Increase activeness in your chapter
2. Plan and coordinate chapter’s Public Relations Campaigns, NSCS R.U.S.H!
and other member recruitment activities
3. Publicize chapter meeting, events and member accomplishments
4. Participate in Organization Fairs, Fall Welcome activities, etc.
5. Visit Freshman Orientations/Seminars, Honors Classes, Residence Halls,
etc. to provide publicity for your NSCS chapter
6. Update the NSCS Chapter Facebook page with events and pictures
7. Ensure your campus is engaged and familiar with NSCS
8. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
G. Secretary-Treasurer (may be split into two positions)
1. Record minutes of the officer and general meetings
2. Take attendance at meetings (officer meetings may take place via
conference call or IM)
3. Distribute all information about national opportunities to members and
officer board
4. Provide updates at officer meetings about budget
5. Maintain records for Attendance Tracking Program
6. Submit notes of meetings to chapter members and NSCS national office via
Report Meeting Minutes under Officer Tools at www.nscs.org.
7. Prepare annual chapter budget, manage and oversee all financial
transactions for the chapter, in conjunction with chapter advisor
8. Signature is included on all chapter banking records including as a co-
signer
9. Establish and follow reimbursement procedures
10. Facilitate all correspondence and distribution of materials
11. Plan all chapter fundraising activities
12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
H. Vice President for Social Media
1. Upload picture(s) and tag all of the officers from your chapter on Facebook
2. Ensure all meeting minutes on Facebook are posted in the “Notes” section
by Secretary
3. Publicize chapter meeting, events and member accomplishments on the

Facebook Fan Page
4. Maintain conversation by responding to comments and answering
questions on the Facebook Fan Page
5. Create and upload photos/video for events on Facebook
6. Use Status Update to make announcements for events and important
reminders
7. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the
Chapter President
Section 4
Chapter Officer Term
Undergraduate members of the institution shall be elected or appointed to serve as officers
for the chapter.
A. The amount of time the officer serves in this capacity should be no less than one
academic year and not exceed two academic years unless approved by the NSCS
national office or by an election held by the chapter.
B. If an officer chooses to resign for any reason, the advisor and chapter president
should immediately notify the Society’s national office and meet with the chapter
leadership to discuss and designate a replacement.
Section 5
Faculty Advisor Term
A faculty or staff member of the institution shall be elected to serve as the advisor for the
chapter.
A. The amount of time the advisor serves in this capacity shall be individually
determined but should be no less than one year.
B. If an advisor chooses to resign for any reason, the advisor and chapter president
shall immediately notify the Society’s national office and meet with the chapter
leadership to discuss and designate a replacement.
Section 6
Removal of Executive Board Member
An executive board member and advisor of a NSCS chapter may initiate removal of an
elected officer if this officer meets one or more of the offenses designated in Article IV,
Section 7. Final decision of removal from an office shall be subject to the approval of the
executive board, advisor and the NSCS national office.
A. To initiate the removal of an elected officer, the situation will be brought to the
attention of the executive board and the advisor.
B. The executive board and the advisor shall convene an officer meeting where at the
officer in question will be given an opportunity to share his/her perspective on the
matter.

C. After the meeting takes place, the executive board will then vote on whether the
officers’ actions are grounds for removal. The advisor will not vote, but will ensure
a fair decision is reached.
D. If there is a majority vote to remove the officer, he/she will be notified of the
decision within two days. An officer can be removed from the executive board due
to a failure to fulfill the duties of the position which are stated in the chapter
constitution. Refer to Article IV, Section 6 for a list of offenses. Once the officer has
been removed, it is the duty of the chapter president to inform the national office of
the decision and to hold a special election to fill the vacant position.
E. The NSCS national office has the right to remove officers or an entire officer board if
they are not meeting the standards and expectations of a chapter officer according
to the NSCS constitution.
Section 7
Removable Offenses
A. Failure to uphold duties of the positions as set forth by the chapter constitution.
B. Failure to uphold appropriate conduct standards when representing NSCS.
C. Misuse or misappropriation of chapter funds.
D. Failure to comply with attendance requirements of all meetings as set forth by the
executive board unless granted an excused absence by the executive board.
ARTICLE V
This chapter constitution may not be amended without written approval of the Society
Board of Directors. Proposed amendments must be in writing to the Chief Executive Officer
at the national office. This chapter constitution serves as the complement to the
Constitution and Bylaws of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Bylaws established by the Central Michigan University Chapter:
Article IV
Section 2
E. If not all e-board positions are filled at the beginning of the fall semester, an election
process must be put in place immediately.
F. After elections in the Spring Semester, old and newly elected e-board members will work
together for a smooth transition for the remainder of the year.
Section 3
A
2. In order to be considered an active member of the chapter, officers must: only miss two regular
member meetings per semester, unless otherwise excused from the President or Vice President,
attend all e-board meetings unless otherwise excused from the President of Vice President, attend a
total of 9 events (socials, community service, fundraiser) besides the meetings per semester for the
positions of : President, VP, Secretary, Social Media, SGA Representative, Historian, VP of PACE,
Treasurer, and PR Representative. For the positions of Social Chair, VP of Community Service, and
Fundraiser chair, a total of 6 events other than your planned positions are required for your
attendance. Social Chair, VP of Community Service, and Fundraiser chair are expected to attend all
events that they plan. Attendance from all executive board members is required at the Fall
Induction Ceremony. Main Stage and RUSH events are also required for all e-board members to
attend.
12. If an e-board member is unable to attend an e-board meeting, a written explanation of updated
information on their position including future events etc., need to be present via e-mail to the
President prior to the e-board meeting day and time.
13. Officers must be in constant communication with the rest of the executive board. Officers need
to reply to an e-mail, text message, etc. from another e-board member within 3 days of initial
contact, unless extenuating circumstances occur. Failure to reply within 3 days on three different
occasions will lead to a verbal warning.
14. All officers will be required to wear their name badges to all NSCS events and meetings. In
addition, professional conduct will be expected at all NSCS events. Anytime any e-board member is
wearing NSCS apparel, they are expected to behave in an appropriate manner. Dress at all events
and meetings are required to be at the minimum casual dress. This means no sweats, holes in jeans,
etc.

13. Oversee that all activity reports are filled out and reported to nscs.org.
14. Go with PR to outside events such as classrooms to promote our chapter.
15. Establish an agenda for e-board meetings.
16. Take over any unfulfilled positions.

11. Head a Relay for Life team in the spring if no captain is established.
12. Go with PR to outside events such as classrooms to promote our chapter.

9. Attend all community service events planned for your position.
10. The option to create a committee for larger community service projects is permitted.
11. Fill out activity reports for all events that your plan and post about the events on the Facebook
page before and after each event.
12. A minimum of 2 events per each full month that classes are in session is required.

13. Enter all PACE related activities into the activities report on nscs.org and update the chapter’s
Facebook page about events.
14. March to College Day must take place in March of each year.

4. Organize and attend Main Stage in the Fall.
9. Create a RUSH committee for tabling events in the Spring Semester.
10. Report all RUSH and PR events to the activities reports on nscs.org and report to the Facebook
page.
11. Go to FYE (First Year Experience) classes and honors classes to speak about our chapter to get
Freshman excited about our chapter.
G
This position will be secretary only, who will be responsible for numbers: 1,2,3,5 and 6.
13. Post activity reports for all general member meetings. Post day, time and location for all general
meetings on the chapters Facebook page.
14. Email members regularly about meetings and events.

15. Create the general member meeting agendas and make a powerpoint for the meetings.
16. Make all members aware of scholarship opportunities presented from the national office.
H
8. Organize and maintain the pictures on the chapters Facebook page, as well as tag members and
update the cover and profile pictures.
9. Establish a chapter Twitter account in Fall 2013 by August 25th
. Maintain the Twitter account.
I - Historian
1. Takes pictures throughout the year at all events. If unable to attend an event, it is the
responsibility of the Historian to designate another officer or general member to take pictures at
the event.
2. Create a scrapbook for the year with pictures of all NSCS events. Fall activities pages for the
scrapbook must be complete by the end of the fall semester.
3. Create a slideshow at the end of the year and publish on the chapter’s Facebook page.
4. Keep track of star status requirements to ensure all pictures necessary are posted.
J – Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for the duties numbered 4, 7, 8, and 9 under the Secretary/Treasurer
description. (Article IV Section G)
17. Communicate with other e-board members on the balance and budget to control spending.
18. Oversee all transactions made with the NSCS credit card and checkbook.
19. Keep the chapter lock-box in a secure location and maintain balance of cash in box.
20. Collect receipts for all transactions and keep a log of funds/chapter money spent.
21. Take over the fundraising chair if the position is not filled.
22. Monthly reports to e-board on balance of accounts.
K-Fundraiser
Responsible for number 11 as listed in Article IV Section G
1. Hold at least half of the fundraising events that will not cost members money.
2. Hold a minimum of 2 fundraising events per each full month that classes are in session
throughout the year.
3. Report all events on the activities page on nscs.org and report all fundraising events to the
chapter’s Facebook page.
4. Work with the treasurer to fund events if needed
5. Take over the treasure position if the position is not filled.
6. Do not repeat fundraising events often
7. Attend all fundraising events.
L-Social Chair
1. Plan at least 2 socials per each full month that classes are in session throughout the year.

2. Socials can be scheduled during or before/after general meetings.
3. Think of original and new social ideas ( do not repeat)
4. Fill out activity reports for all social events held on nscs.org and update information about socials
on the chapter’s Facebook page.
5. Attend all social events.
6. For socials not on campus, the social chair is responsible to arranging carpooling for members
who need it.
7. Optional to plan socials with other clubs on campus.
8. Poll members for socials that interest them.
M- Student Government Representative (SGA Rep)
1. Attend all SGA meetings
2. Join a SGA committee
3. Share information with e-board and general members
4. Get the opinion of e-board for votes in the SGA setting.
Section 6
The removal of an officer will start in a verbal warning from the President and/or VP.
If the problem is not resolved within 2 weeks, the next step will be a meeting with the President,
VP, and chapter advisor to address problems and provide possible solutions.
If after another 2 weeks the problem still occurs, it will be brought to the e-board as a whole, and a
vote will take place on whether the officer will be removed from the executive board or not.

NSCS Chapter Constitution Summary

  • 1. NSCS CHAPTER CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I The name of this organization shall be The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Central Michigan University. ARTICLE II Section 1 The purpose of this organization shall be as follows: A. To recognize and celebrate high achievement among first and second year students in all academic disciplines. B. To encourage and promote high standards throughout the collegiate experience. C. To provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership development for members. D. To provide scholarships, such as the Merit Award, Scholar Abroad, Scholar at Sea, and Graduate to member(s) who successfully apply and compete for these awards. E. To organize and encourage learning opportunities through community service. F. To foster an overall appreciation for the value of the higher education experience. G. To continue to uphold the standards determined by the Association of College Honor Societies as part of the organization’s membership. Section 2 The National Society of Collegiate Scholars agrees to abide by all rules and regulations which have been set forth for all students and organizations at Central Michigan University. ARTICLE III Section 1 Membership into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is by invitation only and is open to students in all academic disciplines who meet the following criteria: A. Successfully completed at least twelve credit hours but no more than sixty. B. First or second year student at the time of affirmation. C. Attain at least a 3.4 grade point average on the 4.0 scale and rank in the top 20% of their class. D. Complete and return the membership profile and confirmation of society membership. E. Pay the Society induction and lifetime membership fee. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 2. Section 2 The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Central Michigan University is a chapter of the national organization The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. A Board of Directors, including the President and Executive Vice-President of the student led National Leadership Council, sets policy and governance for the national organization and determines all Society fees. Section 3 Membership standards for the Society do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, age, financial status, social status or sexual orientation. ARTICLE IV Section 1 This chapter should have a leadership group comprised of a president, executive vice president, vice president for community service, vice president for Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence (PACE), secretary, treasurer and any other officer that the Society chapter believes necessary to meet its goals. Section 2 The Society officers shall be elected by a fair and democratic process. A. Elections shall be held and reported to the national office on or before April 15. B. The outgoing officer board will hold an officer transition meeting with the incoming officer board. C. The outgoing officer board will end their term at the end of the spring quarter/semester. D. Newly elected officers will begin their term at the end of the spring quarter/semester. Section 3 The duties and responsibilities will be defined as follows: A. For all officers: 1. Committing fully to the NSCS chapter officer position for the duration of your term. 2. Living the NSCS culture as an active member of the NSCS. 3. Promoting opportunities for members to make the most of their NSCS experiences. 4. Recruiting members year-round, culminating with the member invitation season in the spring. 5. Communicating information and reporting activities regularly to the NSCS national office both in times of success and in times of struggle. 6. Holding an annual Induction Convocation to honor, inspire and engage new NSCS members. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 3. 7. Running an effective chapter and planning events on campus that engage NSCS members. 8. Sharing chapter achievements with administrators, faculty and media on campus. 9. Upholding NSCS standards in all communications to effectively brand NSCS locally and nationally as an exceptional honors society. 10. Sustaining the life of the chapter through comprehensive officer transitions and training. 11. Developing personal and professional skills through leadership opportunities. 12. Attend all officer meetings and events B. President 1. Attend the Leadership Summit; if for any reason the president cannot attend the Summit then he/she shall find another officer or member to attend. Beginning in 2007-2008, chapters who register an officer and/or member for the Summit but do not actually attend the Summit will be penalized one STAR status level if applicable. 2. Register chapter on campus as a recognized student organization. 3. Signature is included on all chapter banking records; including as a co- signer for chapter checks. 4. Work with officer board to organize, plan and facilitate the growth and success of the chapter. 5. Ensure all officers understand and carry out responsibilities. 6. Meet once a month with chapter advisor. 7. Maintain positive relationship with school by abiding by university/college guidelines. 8. Act as a liaison between the national office and local chapter. 9. Meet all deadlines set by the national office. 10. Determine Distinguished Member nominations with member and officer input. 11. Organize officer elections and submit results to the national office by April 15. 12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by Chapter C. Executive Vice President 1. Fulfill the duties of the chapter president in his/her absence 2. Oversee the planning of the Induction convocation and other membership recruitment activities 3. Plan and coordinate chapter officer meetings. 4. Organize chapter general membership meetings. 5. Secure speakers for meetings, events and other activities - Continued on Next Page -
  • 4. 6. Initiate collaboration between chapter and other groups/organizations 7. Fulfill the duties of the chapter president in his/her absence 8. Ensure that chapter meets minimum STAR requirements 9. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President D. Vice President for Community Service 1. Work diligently to involve members in community service initiatives. 2. Organize and coordinate service events 3. Be prepared, visible and accessible at all projects. 4. Promote and involve members in community service initiatives at all levels: a. Planning. b. Publicity. c. Execution. d. Post follow up. 5. Collaborate with other campus or community organizations for events. 6. Ensure appropriate follow up after each activity. a. Send thank you cards via US mail. b. Send thank you e-mail to participants. 7. Work with the national office to involve the chapter in the NSCS days of service: a. Make a Difference Day b. Martin Luther King Jr. Day c. National Youth Service Day 8. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President E. Vice President of Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence (PACE) 1. Work with the national PACE coordinator on all components of PACE. 2. Establish/maintain/expand the NSCS PACE program on your campus. 3. Establish and maintain relationship with partner school/organization staff. 4. Plan regular PACE activities, which include: ongoing school visits, assemblies, and/or a March to College Day. 5. Recruit and train PACE volunteers on campus (this may involve non-NSCS members.) 6. Provide ongoing communication and support to volunteers. 7. Be an active, energetic, and visible participant at all PACE events. 8. Regularly communicate with the national office staff person in charge of PACE about all components of the program. 9. Submit updates about PACE activities to the national office via Report PACE Activities in the Officer Tools at www.nscs.org 10. Solicit feedback from volunteers, students, and partner school/organization staff. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 5. 11. Solicit written testimonials from volunteers, students, and partner school/organization staff. 12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President F. Vice President for Membership/Public Relations 1. Increase activeness in your chapter 2. Plan and coordinate chapter’s Public Relations Campaigns, NSCS R.U.S.H! and other member recruitment activities 3. Publicize chapter meeting, events and member accomplishments 4. Participate in Organization Fairs, Fall Welcome activities, etc. 5. Visit Freshman Orientations/Seminars, Honors Classes, Residence Halls, etc. to provide publicity for your NSCS chapter 6. Update the NSCS Chapter Facebook page with events and pictures 7. Ensure your campus is engaged and familiar with NSCS 8. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President G. Secretary-Treasurer (may be split into two positions) 1. Record minutes of the officer and general meetings 2. Take attendance at meetings (officer meetings may take place via conference call or IM) 3. Distribute all information about national opportunities to members and officer board 4. Provide updates at officer meetings about budget 5. Maintain records for Attendance Tracking Program 6. Submit notes of meetings to chapter members and NSCS national office via Report Meeting Minutes under Officer Tools at www.nscs.org. 7. Prepare annual chapter budget, manage and oversee all financial transactions for the chapter, in conjunction with chapter advisor 8. Signature is included on all chapter banking records including as a co- signer 9. Establish and follow reimbursement procedures 10. Facilitate all correspondence and distribution of materials 11. Plan all chapter fundraising activities 12. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President H. Vice President for Social Media 1. Upload picture(s) and tag all of the officers from your chapter on Facebook 2. Ensure all meeting minutes on Facebook are posted in the “Notes” section by Secretary 3.   • 6. Facebook Fan Page 4. Maintain conversation by responding to comments and answering questions on the Facebook Fan Page 5. Create and upload photos/video for events on Facebook 6. Use Status Update to make announcements for events and important reminders 7. Attend all officer meetings and events unless otherwise approved by the Chapter President Section 4 Chapter Officer Term Undergraduate members of the institution shall be elected or appointed to serve as officers for the chapter. A. The amount of time the officer serves in this capacity should be no less than one academic year and not exceed two academic years unless approved by the NSCS national office or by an election held by the chapter. B. If an officer chooses to resign for any reason, the advisor and chapter president should immediately notify the Society’s national office and meet with the chapter leadership to discuss and designate a replacement. Section 5 Faculty Advisor Term A faculty or staff member of the institution shall be elected to serve as the advisor for the chapter. A. The amount of time the advisor serves in this capacity shall be individually determined but should be no less than one year. B. If an advisor chooses to resign for any reason, the advisor and chapter president shall immediately notify the Society’s national office and meet with the chapter leadership to discuss and designate a replacement. Section 6 Removal of Executive Board Member An executive board member and advisor of a NSCS chapter may initiate removal of an elected officer if this officer meets one or more of the offenses designated in Article IV, Section 7. Final decision of removal from an office shall be subject to the approval of the executive board, advisor and the NSCS national office. A. To initiate the removal of an elected officer, the situation will be brought to the attention of the executive board and the advisor. B. The executive board and the advisor shall convene an officer meeting where at the officer in question will be given an opportunity to share his/her perspective on the matter. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 7. C. After the meeting takes place, the executive board will then vote on whether the officers’ actions are grounds for removal. The advisor will not vote, but will ensure a fair decision is reached. D. If there is a majority vote to remove the officer, he/she will be notified of the decision within two days. An officer can be removed from the executive board due to a failure to fulfill the duties of the position which are stated in the chapter constitution. Refer to Article IV, Section 6 for a list of offenses. Once the officer has been removed, it is the duty of the chapter president to inform the national office of the decision and to hold a special election to fill the vacant position. E. The NSCS national office has the right to remove officers or an entire officer board if they are not meeting the standards and expectations of a chapter officer according to the NSCS constitution. Section 7 Removable Offenses A. Failure to uphold duties of the positions as set forth by the chapter constitution. B. Failure to uphold appropriate conduct standards when representing NSCS. C. Misuse or misappropriation of chapter funds. D. Failure to comply with attendance requirements of all meetings as set forth by the executive board unless granted an excused absence by the executive board. ARTICLE V This chapter constitution may not be amended without written approval of the Society Board of Directors. Proposed amendments must be in writing to the Chief Executive Officer at the national office. This chapter constitution serves as the complement to the Constitution and Bylaws of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 8. Bylaws established by the Central Michigan University Chapter: Article IV Section 2 E. If not all e-board positions are filled at the beginning of the fall semester, an election process must be put in place immediately. F. After elections in the Spring Semester, old and newly elected e-board members will work together for a smooth transition for the remainder of the year. Section 3 A 2. In order to be considered an active member of the chapter, officers must: only miss two regular member meetings per semester, unless otherwise excused from the President or Vice President, attend all e-board meetings unless otherwise excused from the President of Vice President, attend a total of 9 events (socials, community service, fundraiser) besides the meetings per semester for the positions of : President, VP, Secretary, Social Media, SGA Representative, Historian, VP of PACE, Treasurer, and PR Representative. For the positions of Social Chair, VP of Community Service, and Fundraiser chair, a total of 6 events other than your planned positions are required for your attendance. Social Chair, VP of Community Service, and Fundraiser chair are expected to attend all events that they plan. Attendance from all executive board members is required at the Fall Induction Ceremony. Main Stage and RUSH events are also required for all e-board members to attend. 12. If an e-board member is unable to attend an e-board meeting, a written explanation of updated information on their position including future events etc., need to be present via e-mail to the President prior to the e-board meeting day and time. 13. Officers must be in constant communication with the rest of the executive board. Officers need to reply to an e-mail, text message, etc. from another e-board member within 3 days of initial contact, unless extenuating circumstances occur. Failure to reply within 3 days on three different occasions will lead to a verbal warning. 14. All officers will be required to wear their name badges to all NSCS events and meetings. In addition, professional conduct will be expected at all NSCS events. Anytime any e-board member is wearing NSCS apparel, they are expected to behave in an appropriate manner. Dress at all events and meetings are required to be at the minimum casual dress. This means no sweats, holes in jeans, etc. - Continued on Next Page -
  • 9. B 13. Oversee that all activity reports are filled out and reported to nscs.org. 14. Go with PR to outside events such as classrooms to promote our chapter. 15. Establish an agenda for e-board meetings. 16. Take over any unfulfilled positions. C 3. Remove (responsibility of President) 4. Remove (responsibility of Secretary) 10. Help President fulfill any open e-board positions. 11. Head a Relay for Life team in the spring if no captain is established. 12. Go with PR to outside events such as classrooms to promote our chapter. D 9. Attend all community service events planned for your position. 10. The option to create a committee for larger community service projects is permitted. 11. Fill out activity reports for all events that your plan and post about the events on the Facebook page before and after each event. 12. A minimum of 2 events per each full month that classes are in session is required. E 4. include pen pals 5. Remove 11. Add testimonials to the Scrapbook 13. Enter all PACE related activities into the activities report on nscs.org and update the chapter’s Facebook page about events. 14. March to College Day must take place in March of each year. F 4. Organize and attend Main Stage in the Fall. 9. Create a RUSH committee for tabling events in the Spring Semester. 10. Report all RUSH and PR events to the activities reports on nscs.org and report to the Facebook page. 11. Go to FYE (First Year Experience) classes and honors classes to speak about our chapter to get Freshman excited about our chapter. G This position will be secretary only, who will be responsible for numbers: 1,2,3,5 and 6. 13. Post activity reports for all general member meetings.   • 10. 15. Create the general member meeting agendas and make a powerpoint for the meetings. 16. Make all members aware of scholarship opportunities presented from the national office. H 8. Organize and maintain the pictures on the chapters Facebook page, as well as tag members and update the cover and profile pictures. 9. Establish a chapter Twitter account in Fall 2013 by August 25th . Maintain the Twitter account. I - Historian 1. Takes pictures throughout the year at all events. If unable to attend an event, it is the responsibility of the Historian to designate another officer or general member to take pictures at the event. 2. Create a scrapbook for the year with pictures of all NSCS events. Fall activities pages for the scrapbook must be complete by the end of the fall semester. 3. Create a slideshow at the end of the year and publish on the chapter’s Facebook page. 4. Keep track of star status requirements to ensure all pictures necessary are posted. J – Treasurer The Treasurer is responsible for the duties numbered 4, 7, 8, and 9 under the Secretary/Treasurer description. (Article IV Section G) 17. Communicate with other e-board members on the balance and budget to control spending. 18. Oversee all transactions made with the NSCS credit card and checkbook. 19. Keep the chapter lock-box in a secure location and maintain balance of cash in box. 20. Collect receipts for all transactions and keep a log of funds/chapter money spent. 21. Take over the fundraising chair if the position is not filled. 22. Monthly reports to e-board on balance of accounts. K-Fundraiser Responsible for number 11 as listed in Article IV Section G 1. Hold at least half of the fundraising events that will not cost members money. 2. Hold a minimum of 2 fundraising events per each full month that classes are in session throughout the year. 3. Report all events on the activities page on nscs.org and report all fundraising events to the chapter’s Facebook page. 4. Work with the treasurer to fund events if needed 5. Take over the treasure position if the position is not filled. 6. Do not repeat fundraising events often 7. Attend all fundraising events. L-Social Chair 1.   • 11. 2. Socials can be scheduled during or before/after general meetings. 3. Think of original and new social ideas ( do not repeat) 4. Fill out activity reports for all social events held on nscs.org and update information about socials on the chapter’s Facebook page. 5. Attend all social events. 6. For socials not on campus, the social chair is responsible to arranging carpooling for members who need it. 7. Optional to plan socials with other clubs on campus. 8. Poll members for socials that interest them. M- Student Government Representative (SGA Rep) 1. Attend all SGA meetings 2. Join a SGA committee 3. Share information with e-board and general members 4. Get the opinion of e-board for votes in the SGA setting. Section 6 The removal of an officer will start in a verbal warning from the President and/or VP. If the problem is not resolved within 2 weeks, the next step will be a meeting with the President, VP, and chapter advisor to address problems and provide possible solutions. If after another 2 weeks the problem still occurs, it will be brought to the e-board as a whole, and a vote will take place on whether the officer will be removed from the executive board or not. - Continued on Next Page -
