This is HBT Series Workshop details on Practical Test Effort Estimation, presented by CleanSoft Academy. The workshop is delivered in two modes - open workshop (1 day) and as corporate workshop tailored to meet specific needs of software companies.
2. Estimation is scientific guessing.
The keyword is “Scientific”.
To enable good testing, a priori
estimation of effort that is close to
the intended is critical.
Correct estimation is typically understood as the outcome of a
rich experience. In short this is good guesswork.
The perennial question is
“Is there a way to scientifically guess?”
Can there be a set of techniques, principles, guidelines that can
allow us to rationally arrive at good estimates?
Is there a science to estimation?

3. Is there a science to estimation? Guess so!
Identify the various activities in test lifecycle and then sum the
individual estimates. How to identify these?
Use a goal focused validation. This means
1. what types of defects are expected to be uncovered?
2. therefore, what types of test do we perform?
3. at what level should they be done?
4. how many cycles do we anticipate
5. how may test scenarios do we anticipate
6. do we need use automation? how much?
Decomposing the problem allows to figure out the science.

4. “Practical test effort estimation”
is Powered by HBT
Hypothesis Based Testing (HBT) is a personal scientific test methodology
powered by the defect detection technology STEMTM to deliver clean
software. It consists of six stages, with the first two stages focused on
“Understanding expectations” and “Understanding context”. The nest stage is
about scientifically hypothesizing defects while the fourth stage is devise a
proof that deals with strategy, planning and design
Defect centered activity breakdown, a STEM core concept is very useful to
estimating effort. This uses the information of quality levels, test types derived
from potential defect types and #cycles and #scenarios to estimate effort.
Box Model, a core concept in STEM is used to ensure rapid estimation of
#scenarios that is not person-dependent.
